Fantastic song. I remember when the album came out. I downloaded and listened on my drive to work. It was stuck in my head all day. The messages and ideas and it's theme. It's a concept album which most people don't like. They prefer random songs. And I get that. They don't want a 12 song story where the songs resemble each other. Shortest answer: most of the arctic monkey's fandom joined after A.M's groundbreaking release, during that there was "revival" of other older songs such as 505, crying lightning... which gave the band a certain "image", and _image_ is the last thing arctic monkeys could ever have. We were told so long ago since their first album : *whatever people say that I am, that's exactly who I am not* . Upon the release of an album that's soo different from the "image" the new fans had: something that no longer looks like The NBRHD or Chase Atlantic or... any other bands that get associated with AM, they got confused, they didn't sign up for a sci-fi social commentary poem ?! they signed up for Do I Wanna Know ! which itself is a spectacular song from another spectacular album. But they shouldn't expect it to be the focal point of all their future work. This "dislike" happens a looot when an artist suddenly changes their style (Lorde, Miley Cyrus, Drake, Katy perry...) the only thing people forgot, is that arctic monkey's style is Not having a style, or -going by the title of their first big album - going purposefylly against that "style" other people set up for them.

Those debating if it's "so many lovers" or "so many Lolas", it's "Lolas"... The book Her Name Was Lola describes a middle-aged writer struggling with a creative impasse. It covers much of the same territory as Fellini’s 8 ½, which Turner has mentioned during interviews in reference to exploring his writer’s block. The book includes the line “There are so many Lolas!” which suggests this may be a direct reference. The name Lola is significant because it is the shortened form of Dolores, meaning “sorrows” in Spanish. Turner quotes elsewhere on the album from the L.A. lexicon of Spanish loanwords and may here be writing a play on words meaning “I never thought I’d meet so many sorrows“. Another possibility, in keeping with the album’s imagery of lounge singers and tawdry nightclubs, is that the name invokes the heroine of Barry Manilow’s “Copacabana.” Source : Genius Lyrics
