That you are taking on every step of her build is crazy cool 🎈 one day you will walk down a pier or row out of a marina, approaching an absolute stunning vessel..Yours that you tailored inch to inch, your entire brain- heart- & soul embedded every inch of the way🎇By the way, your video quality, your explanations, set lighting, audio quality = A+ 🎈Your totally rocking it !

It’s looking good. I would perhaps look at getting it running , “cutting air” before you thread lock everything. Did you buy “extension” cables for the encoder signals ? It’s a quicker way of getting every thing up and running, rather than soldering onto the 15 way dtype connectors . 😃
@ArcticSeaCamel
@ArcticSeaCamel 3 жыл бұрын
That’s a good idea. I might do that. The soldering job is already on it’s way. There wasn’t that much ready-to-go connectors anyway. Only the four on the encoders and the cables which came with the motors weren’t long enough. I just hope that there wouldn’t be much interference. 🤞🏼

It's nice to see a all togheter shop. I also am building my own machine. I cut the interior diameter and the key way on a wire edm machine. Making my machine with rotating ball nuts. If u need any help or info I can lend a hand :) Keep on the good work brother!!

Nice, a new Video with lots of progress! :) One question: seeing that your from Finland i am temped to ask if you just want to sail on the baltic sea or travel further (north Sea etc). greetings from germany!

We’ll see about that. The boat is not going to be exactly ice going vessel anyway but at least Iceland would be interesting to visit. My unofficial goal is to travel by sailboat to all continents to do snowboarding - which is kind of interesting combination I’d think. 😎🏂

That really is impressive, you must be proud of your achievement. The whole set up looks very robust and should ensure you get real repeatability. I am not sure if I understood correctly but where you talk about fitting a sensor (approx 18:30) for the end stop on the long longitudinal rail and say the finish of the structural box section is not so good so that you may have to fabricate a mounting plate from plywood - did you not consider a custom bracket that could actually just be bolted to the end of the track itself? (There is already a cap screw at the end of the track (securing the track to the base rail) for securing the bracket).

Hi Norman! Actually yes I concidered that kind of option as well but I would also like to get as big operational length as possible. That stopper option would probably shorten the Y axis with more than 10cm. (some length from both ends). I don’t know if that’s really important but that’s the reason I built machine this big. 😅 And I am proud! Now I just hope that everything works as planned! 🤓😬🤞🏼

Hi , what reduction do you use , and why ? 5:1 or 3:1 ? I am building a similar 2m x 3m CNC and I can't decide what to use ... ? Pls help
@ArcticSeaCamel
@ArcticSeaCamel Жыл бұрын
Hi! There's no particular reason for having reduction here. It's just to keep the weight of the motor more on the center of the "thing-that-attaches to the rack". The motors are 12Nm so plenty of power without reduction!
@gioraver
@gioraver Жыл бұрын
im feel motivated to make a proyect as you , the motors are 12Nm constant torque or peck , can you share the part number , best regards @@ArcticSeaCamel

I bought them as a kit from eBay. I believe they were sold by Rattmotor or something like that. Included with controllers. There’s plenty of suppliers for them and mounting is standard NEMA32.

One thing for sure you've just about re-invented the wheel here. That machine must of cost you a fair bundle. I think it would've been much cheaper to purchase one instead designing and building your own machine. You know you've got your self a descent machine being that you've made it so you know what you've invested in it.. Hope the route you have taken here pays off for you when its all said and done. Nevertheless you got a good machine to move forward with your plans and you can always make things for folks as your building your boat which will most likely pay you dividends by the time this project is all said and done. Its looking good.

Well. Basically I just took the ideas from others and tried to make them as easy to build as possible. So nothing new. Machine this size is not something you can just buy. Most of the hobby machines are small and bigger ones cost easily double or triple what I spent here. The most expensive thing was the machining of the table and the aluminum parts. Electronics and other stuff wasn't actually that much. Machine isn't perfect, but it works as it should and now I have very well made platform to build from - should I some day want to make something differently. What I'd do differently if I was to make this again is to go with aluminum extrusion. They're much more expensive than steel, but wouldn't necessarily need expensive machining.

This is so interesting. Im about to build a cnc myself but not as big as yours. I have 4 THK 985x20 mm rails and 8 THK carriges. I really would like a bigger machine but it is too expensive to buy THK rails. Is it possible to use other brand rail with the THK carriges or do i lose all precision then? (The rails i have i got for free, all brand new). Really looking forward to see your progress!! Best regards from Ruotsi!

Hejsan! Thanks for your message. I really can’t say if rails have any standards. I bought mine as set from cnc-discount.com and they seem to be quite OK quality as I can see. Maybe you could buy only the longest rails for Y and the existing with X and Z?
@J1I9M7M4Y
@J1I9M7M4Y 3 жыл бұрын
@@ArcticSeaCamel Yeah, that was what i was thinking about to do. If i buy new for Y, i can use the 985mm for X and Z. Lets say i want 350mm travel for Z, then i have 1620 left for X. That means i have enough witdth for a whole sheet of plywood or a whole sheet metal plate (im thinking of building a router/plasma combo). I think i would need something like 2700mm of Y travel to be able to machine a 2500mm plywood. Since i work as a CNC plasma operator i can do many things for the machine at work. We also have a huge FIL milling machine to make everything flat and precise. Thank you very much for sharing your build and answering questions!

8-26-23 are you using something to square your gantry when homing
@ArcticSeaCamel
@ArcticSeaCamel Жыл бұрын
23-08-27 (😉) No. I actually don’t have homing system currently at all. I have just set the zero position and I make sure that gantry is not moved while power is off. It has held its squareness very well so far. I checked it while ago by measuring 3-4-5-triangle and it was spot on.

@@ArcticSeaCamel thanks man I am building mine and that was my main concern
@ArcticSeaCamel
@ArcticSeaCamel Жыл бұрын
@@TheNeilcoppley Yeah, I was worried about it too but i'm relieved that it has held it's position so well. If you check my video of making the 3d-carving of the stem piece, it was essential to have the zero position in the right spot for many days. Also since that I've done the second half for that stem piece with the same setup and mold. There was months between the first and second and the zero position hasn't moved "at all" during this whole time. The whole gantry can be moved quite easily when there's no power on the motors. So you need to make sure to power them up always before doing any fiddling with the machine - like cleaning the table etc. for not to accidentally bump into it.

No, they’re closed loop steppers. So they have encoder that stops the movement if steps are lost for some reason. That is actually another thing I need to add to the motion controller, a signal that stepper has error.
