What a great day! When you can crack open THE 10 year trio. Totally agree with your scoring. I first tried Laph10 at a bar, good investment if you've never tried a peated whisky. Didn't hate it. Watched some videos and now I need a bigger cabinet. At this point in my journey I had grabbed the 6 year HP Islay Barley from Port Charlotte instead of the 10 year PC because I know that down the road it'll be PC and Ardbeg in the cabinet and only Laph10 CS. The Islay Barley is mellower peat, youthful and fruity which means it really needs more something, barley or cask influence, or both. It's not a sweet thing it's a youthful thing. But I just had to try it while spending an extra $15 over the expensive PC 10yr cause it's a completely rational thing. Collecting whisky. I use my Laph10 to blend into any whisky (ey) that could use a little peat. Neat, I just don't anymore when there's something else to explore. One of my first bottles was the Arran 10. I think that got me hooked on malted barley over corn mash.

@@MaltMuserWhisky man is have to go with the Port Charlotte but Ardbeg is right behind it. I think I just prefer the malt from Bruichladdich over Ardbeg's just slightly. I'm a big fan of the Classic Laddie too.

Great review Erik ... I am an Ardbeg fanboy ... love the Ardbeg but have enjoyed Laphroaig and Port Charlotte expressions very much as well. Yet to try the PC10. Have a great weekend!

Fun review. I always like Islay comparisons and I can't recall ever seeing a review taste-test of all the Islay 10's before. A long time ago I did a side-by-side with Ardbeg and Laphroaig 10 and remember preferring the Ardbeg. However, I've been more into Laphroaig bottlings lately and with the relatively new introduction of the PC 10, it should be interesting to try my own side-by-side tasting of all three.

Big Port Charlotte 10 fan myself. There are some things they are doing that make it different from other peated Islay Whisky's. They get peated malt from Inverness in the Highlands so it's peated with highland peat. The others get peated malt from Port Ellen on Islay that used Islay peat with all its seawater, kelp and seaweed character. Also they have a few French oak red wine casks in the mix that really kick up the fruit flavors (the classic laddie has this too) Cheers Eric

Yeah they really are. Some f the more fun whiskies of the past couple years, and the 10 is on exception.

Wonderful review. I would love to sit and sip any of these bottles all night. Tough to disagree with your ranking, I would put Ardbeg first, but then it's a bit of toss up which way I would go. Thanks for sharing!

Cheers, Neighbor! This was a lot of fun, and while I do slightly prefer 1 over the others, they are all really solid pours.

Whoever says that you can't taste anything over a certain peat ppm; drizzle some Ardbeg over a block of peat, take a big ol' bite, and then, with a straight face; tell me that tastes the same as the Ardbeg neat... Reminds me of the whole "The human eye can't see more than 30fps" argument that console gamers used to use until they got 60fps. It's ok to like a less heavily peated whiskey, but give credit where credit is due

Of course I like all three. I always have at least one of those on hand. However I do like the PC 10 the best. i can get it for $60. It's actually time to buy an Ardbeg 10 as I haven't had it in a while. Kilchoman Machir bay would fit right in hear even though it doesn't have a 10 year age statement. My favorite Islay distilleries are Kilchoman first and then Bruichladdich.

Right on! Yeah I really like all three, and you cannot go wrong with Kilchoman. I really enjoyed the latest Loch Gorm in particular.
