I like the blow-molded cases. They are easy to stack on shelves and keep your tools from getting smashed to bits. We had a work truck full of Hilti hammer drills, Dewault circ saws, etc. that were all in plastic cases. The truck was for the company's concrete crew and they beat the everything out of anything they could get their hands on. The cases kept the expensive tools from being crushed by falling plate compactors or haphazardly strewn sledgehammers. A cloth bag wouldn't be able to do that, and it would be torn to pieces in a matter of days. The hinges would pop apart, but they would just as easily pop back together.

Hilti cases aren't blow molded (at least not the ones the rotary hammers come in) They are proper cases, like the Bosch M-Boxes or the Metabo boxes. That's why they cost extra :) They have at least a chance of being usefull

I finished watching and I really appreciate that you took the drill apart and explained the quality issues with the internals. In addition, your scientitious testing (to use your terminology... LOL) of the battery really impressed me. Some other guy posted a video comparing the DeWalt to Hercules and Bauer, but all he did was compare the CLAIMED specs on the box. What you did was cut through the marketing B.S. and - in the process - destroyed something you (apparently) spent your own money on. A local hardware store has the DeWalt on sale this week for $99, including the two batteries and charger. I guess I know what I'm going to go get. Thanks for your help.

Strictly speaking it's not defined as a warranty but the consumers right to get a repair or replace a broken item. During the first six months the store has to prove that the tool has been abused but after that period you have to be a bit more convincing if it looks like it's been around some tough jobs. But in my experience it's usually not a problem if you talk to them.

That's how the MOSFETs are supposed to dissipate heat. Putting a heatsink on top is not very useful - the plastic of the case insulates it pretty well. They have a metal pad on the bottom of the chip that's bonded right to the die and putting that on thermal vias is the proper way to heatsink them. That said the heatsink is kind of weak looking.

The dewalt batteries use a 10kohm thermistor for overheat protection. Hercules is 100kohm. DeWalt and Hercules put their thermistors between different pins, but you can put a 10k resistor in the Hercules pack across the right pins and the DeWalt tool will take the battery.

If you were to compare the older 20v dewalt tools to the new ones, I bet you would find that they are cutting corners more than they used too, making them more in line with this HF tool. There was another review of the current Dewalt Battery as compared to the HF, and the HF was actually built better. My point, most of this stuff comes from the same places in China, engineered by the same companies, commissioned by tool companies. HF is trying to improve their tools, while Dewalt (aka Black and Decker) is not. Even the Husky tool quality has gone down. Cannot rely on brand names anymore.

Metabo is still good, but I imagine its expensive as frig in the USA? Germany is a 3h drive for me lol, I usually buy Metabo or Makita (cordless drills) angle grinder is Metabo of course. For tools that are used now and then but not very regularly. I buy Green Bosch. Its relatively affordable and not as crappy as most chinesium brands are.

It's funny, before buying my last few tools including an impact driver, a circular saw and an electric drill, I've come to see if you've had a review of them first. Most tool reviews, they take the thing, look at it from a thousand angles under perfect lighting to make it look sexy, drill a few holes, cut a few boards and put the battery through a few drain/charge cycles and give out a score based upon how much funding the manufacturer gave them. You take the thing apart and look at the actual aspect of the tool; the bearings the motor brush surfaces, the quality of the casing, the layout of the control boards and use actual scientific method to test the battery and its charger... So I'd like to thank you for giving us all honest tool reviews with a tasteful amount of sarcasm and sass. I much appreciate them and look forward to more in the future.

Here is the thing. I buy Dewalt and Milwaukee for myself. But, I learned for my construction business years ago (I'm now retired)I bought cheapo crap to put on the job. I probably have had at least 15 saws-alls stolen, uncountable power drills, and circular saws. Lost four or five table saws and chop saws and even a few miter saws. Compressors, nail guns, etc gone, too. On most jobs with casual labor which were most jobs, I provide cheap crap from harbor frt or ACE hdwe. It was all part of doing business. They will last one or two jobs, and if stolen, so what?

The bad thing about buying anything like caulk, paint, etc. there is it has sat there so long that their stock (in my little town) dries out! I have bought caulk, expanding foam, and a tire plug kit from my local Ace, and all of them were completely dried out in the package. Unusable.

I've worked for companies that did it both ways, and the ones who bought good equipment generally hired decent people and paid them well, and the employees in turn cared for the equipment they were given. The ones who bought junk tools hired junk people and paid them junk wages; if you build your business on casual labor you're probably not serious about long term growth or building a good reputation. Oftentimes WHAT you show up with is as important to a client's impression of you as WHO is using it.

The MOSFETs don't need a heat sink; they sink their heat through the BOTTOM of the device via a large pad soldered directly to the copper fill underneath. Modern SMD FETs have such a low ON resistance that they drop VERY little voltage as heat in the ON state. What little heat they do generate is easily handled by the huge, heavy copper fill they are soldered to. I'll lay dollars to dognuts that heat-sink is NOT there to wick the heat away from the FETs, but rather to keep the big-arse Current-Sense Shunt Resistor from heating EVERYTHING ELSE up on the board. Bottom line, this PCB is NOT poorly designed; it is designed using MODERN DESIGN principles which take advantage of the fact that modern semiconductors generate less heat than the copper itself. You can thank development of high-current Radio Control Brushless Electronic Speed Controls for these advances, which are now handling 25V at 30A continuous, 100A surge in a package the size of an SD card; again WITHOUT ANY HEAT SINK. I suspect that if you take the blue epoxy off that armature, you'll find that there's a PTC self-resetting fuse underneath. This has been a common feature of the stator on modern brushless tools for a while now. All that said... looking at the overall construction and the fact it uses an almost identical battery, I'll bet you the Hercules is ACTUALLY DeWalt/B&D's newest discount brand, designed by them and made under contract FOR Horror Fraught in the same Chinese factory that makes all the parts that are ASSEMBLED in the USA for your favorite yellow-jacketed Black & Decker Pecker Wrecker. I've NEVER been a fan of DeWalt; ever since the transmission debacle of the late '90s when they essentially abandoned everybody who bought one of their well-known to be self-grenading drills made/sold over the course of 2 years' production by making the warranty process so abhorrent you just threw the damn thing in the trash. I feel about Makita Drills the same as you feel about their good ol' rat-tail grinders... they'll ALWAYS have a special place in my heart; ever since I and my crew built my first workshop with 3 of 'em and they went on to help me make my living for a decade thereafter. ;)

mne, that's when DeWalt lost me too, since more than one piece had that transmission, and finding out there being made by/with B&D is just horrifying since B7D burned me on a bunch of stuff, all which failed right after I bought it, and dicked me around about the warranty until they said "out of warranty" . Me and most petiole I work with are switching to the dewalt brushless tools and the 20/60 volt tools. We have used every brand . The only thing I can fault dewalt for is their low end batteries. But the 5 and 6 amp battery’s are just as good or better than any out there. And dewalt has nice sales regularly

I love the failed alligator lead part, because it shows exactly what my great boss has taught me to do when diagnosing electrical on automobiles...check your checking equipment! I've learned to NOT buy my alligator clips from Harbor Freight because they fail so often and easily, even unused out of the box! ps -I have a Fluke 87V as well and I love it! Great for auto-technicians as you can test high voltage hybrid circuits down to the tiniest measurements for common stuff as well.

I have had one of these for over 7 years, it has been well used. The original battery still holds a charge for a long time, and charges quickly. It is a workhorse, has plenty of power and has survived several drops. Still has the orig brushes, and none of the black coating has come lose. I would recommend this one.

I worked in electronic industry for 40 years. Battery issues is one of the most frequent complains I have, almost daily. The labeled or rated battery capacity has very little to do with the usable capacity. Usually they are the absolute chemical energy can be stored in the unit. Customer complains about the camcorder shut down at 10.5V on a 12 V battery. What they don’t understand is a lot of the delicate circuits cannot function if the voltage dropped down below 20% of the designed voltage. For example a 200 AH lead acid car battery doesn’t mean it can power a 100A starter for 2 solid hours. It usually will not start your car at or below 10.5V. A lithium ion battery’s life expectancy depends on a lot of factors but the depth of discharge or DoD is the most important. Any device which uses this type of batteries has a very complicated protection circuitry to manage the upper and lower limits of temperature, charging current and discharge current and voltage perimeters. I don’t think they lied about the battery capacity. You get what you paid for. Whenever I can afford, I buy Bosch power tools if I need precision and performance. For those couple times a year or a just nice to have tools, I buy the cheaper one just to do one project. I’m not trying to defend the Chinese products but they build the tools for the money HF or Canadian Tire or Walmart willing to pay. Mind you a tool sold for $99, the factory probably get $30 for it. They are capable of building better products if the customer is willing to pay for it.

Re: outgassing - probably reflects the difference in VOC regs between mainland China and the western world. Re: FETs and thermal - generally most of the heat is conducted through the leadframe, so using the PCB to transfer heat is reasonable, and they should be used as switches so low RDS_on losses, but not a great design.

minimum safe voltage for almost all Li ion cells is 2.5v, not 3.2. you have to use area ruling and TRIG to measure watt hours with diminishing voltage over time, and it gets even more complicated when it's not linear, which it is not.

For a home gamer that drills 11 holes per anum in dead tree carcasses... Good enuf. For people who actually work with them? They wouldn't buy it anyway.

Okay, so this review is over a year old as I write this, but, I have power tools from the 1930s that still have their original electric motors, (I have replaced most of the power cords), so it's still a valid comment, and here it is: HFT is a total crapshoot! I had two cheap Chicago Electric 4 1/2" ginders I used on a contract job, cutting off metal door frames backfilled with concrete. I was going through two or three cutting discs per frame side. Day one, one grinder lasted 5 hours, the other lasted 45 minutes. Day two, my new DeWalt ginder lasted the rest of the year until the contract was finished. That was eight years ago and I still use it frequently, It's small size and great power make it worth every penny. Contrast that with a Chicago Electric portable belt sander I bought about 20 years ago that I have used extensively that still works incredibly well. The switch malfunctioned, I took it apart and found all metal construction, silver plated contacts, spring loaded brass contacts, heavy gauge wiring. One of the contacts had popped off the hinge, after almost two decades of use. I was able to put it back together and it still works. I also have a 10" disk sander and 1" benchtop belt sander that get very frequent use. I've had them about three years with no problems...except that the little belt sander had been assembled wrong from the factory. I had to switch some stuff around to allow it to adjust the tension! I bought the tiny chop saw. The motor was so weak, it would not cut through acrylic, the kind used for pen blanks. I needed a saw that would make very fine, precise cuts, and I had already modified the base for my needs, oops. Fortunately, I just happened to have an airbrush pump I never used with the exact same size motor, but wayyy more torque. But off the shelf, maybe you could cut balsa, or celery. I have the air powered bottle jack that I use on my big H-frame press. That works awesome! However, one of the press plates had paint flaking off with curious white powder underneath. When I ground off the paint, the plate had huge casting voids that they had filled with plaster, then painted over! One ton arbor press - needed lots of adjustment, works as intended. The mig welder! I have used my little welder extensively! I upgraded my bottle size twice I use it so much. The guys at the gas shop laughed at me and said it might last 6 months. That was 13 years ago! I modified the roller to use a big spool. the air inlet got bumped and broke off, but was easily repaired. I am going to upgrade to a better grounding clamp and heavier cable. I know it doesn't compare to Miller, but it was under $200. The Miller is slightly more. I'm on my second solar welding helmet. The first one lasted about 8 years. I only replaced it because the strap broke. The 1300 lb overhead hoist is worth every penny. I use it to lift cabs off of frames, stuff like that. I paid $39 for the little bitty Chicago Electric winch about 18 years ago and have used it to drag old cars onto my trailer, including a 6,000 lb Cadillac Eldorado with sticky brakes! I got the mini-mill, $400. You definitely get what you pay for with that. I'm about to employ the LMS upgrades on that one. The airlift kit is $44. I ruined a $25 carbide end mill from the dreaded head drop. The the air lift will pay for itself pretty quick. The 5" rotating vise is a very good piece of equipment and I use it extensively. Two worst things I 've gotten; the $9.99 battery float charger - it kept draining the battery, the $9.99 rotary tool is complete, zero torque junk, although the included accessories offset the heartbreak. Oh yeah, 14" metal cutoff saw blade cut crooked. Zip ties - good. Heat shrink - good. Electrical cord plugs - good, Folding aluminum ramps - good,.1195 lb folding 4ft trailer - good. 3/4" deep impact socket set with metal case - good. Other than those sockets, I have bought very few HFT hand tools because I've been blessed with lots of high quality USA made hand tools dating back to the early 20th century. That's the great thing about tools, no matter the age, as long as they are in good shape, they are still tools. I have many vintage tools that probably belong in a museum, except that they still work great and are still tools! I'm using tools that have passed through several generations, from my father and his father. My wife's grandfather passed away and had willed his tools to me, not his son. Before that, I had an old WWII vet friend, older than my father, who gave me his fathers machinist tools! I was surprised by this and asked him why I was getting these tools and not his son. He said, because he won't use them, you will.Think about that when it's time to pass your tools on. This is ancient stuff, but it still works. I'm still using mine, but I am curious, will whoever ends up with my tools still be using my powered HFT tools in 80 years? But I digress. So, if you're still reading, you may have less of a life than I do...not necessarily a bad thing. just kidding. I would say that most things HFT have been pretty good, considering the price. Some stuff has been absolute garbage. I keep in mind that Chinesium comes in all shades of quality. Is there a moral to the story? Yes, HFT is a total crapshoot! BTW AvE, great in-depth review; it's just something I can't listen to in front of my daughter. As Captain America says; "Language!" Still, big thumbs up, Thank you!

You cant compare the Wh on the battery with your measured Wh in this way. If you increase your discharge current, your total discharged energy will drop. When you repeat the same test with a much lower current, for example 0,5C or less, your total discharged energy will rise.

Meiestrix Correct, though this is a high-drain tool. 0.5C discharge will give you cell's energy but not how long until you have to recharge in this application. Best advise is marketing will be marketing, buy 2nd battery.

I love the way you take apart tools and do a complete analysis of their components and inner workings and how you discuss the different materials used in the production of these different components and what makes one better than another. It really helps me to gain a better understanding of what goes into the tools that I buy and what corners were cut in their production or perhaps where the manufacturer did a good job in the design and engineering of the tool. I am currently in need of a good cordless reciprocating saw for work. I've had this old Porter Cable Tiger saw for years and it's been a great tool, but it's corded and heavy as crap. I am 50 and grew up repairing VHF Marine radios and Radar systems. Back then, we actually had to replace parts on the circuit boards or build another. One day about 25 years ago, I referred to the volume knob on my car stereo as a "Potentiometer". My friends looked at me like I was nuts. I had to replace it. Lol I work at HFT Honestly not allot of people are buying the drills....because they are expensive for what you get. Plus as mentioned in the video you can just buy another brand for around the same price and it will last longer. Harbor freight niche market is people who want a cheap tool to do a simple job without breaking the bank. The Hercules line of products don't really offer much in quality. It really is pointless to try to sell to that kind of market. I was kind of hoping they would step up thier quality. I guess they did compared to thier other tools but it is way too overpriced.

I got a "Porter and Cable" variant of this kind of cheap drill for $70 at Lowes, It came with two batteries, a sawz-all, skil-saw, a bag, and led flashlight. Cheap and mediocre but it all works. I'm sure the motor on mine is equally cheap. Sawz-all is the most useful tool in the kit.

I have an old craftsman drill and I wanted to take it apart and clean it out. I got the gearbox out and was somehow able to get it back together properly (except the back which I forgot about). I got it back in the body but didn't screw it together and tried to get the chuck out and I launched half the gearbox across my basement. I was somehow able to find all the pieces and got it back together and it works (On 2 9volts, the batteries are dead and I am not spending $40 on an obsolete battery). I think I am going to try and get a harbor freight drill master drill for $20, sacrifice it and Frankenstein the 2 together. Just a fun tinkering project.

Consider making it corded -- find a PSU that can supply whatever voltage it needs with PLENTY of amps and wire it up. Then just consider it a "bench drill" -- I've done this with one of my old corded drills. Better than sitting in the corner.

Joe Walsh Lowe's sells ~22V lithium batteries for their tools for $10. I used one to power a buck regulator pretty easily before I even owned any of their tools, no problems with it despite being priced for science. Try making an adapter to see how it goes

This guy got me thru a hurricane that knocked my power off for 2 weeks, it was on a basket on the back of my truck when I got rear ended (well it took most of the punishment), I use it on job sites to run pumps, she's been completely covered in mud, and I run regularly old 87 thru it and simply keep up with oil changes. It's been a trooper.

Your way of measuring the cut-off-voltage is way off. Ur just seeing the floating voltage, which doesnt tell you anything. You have to see the voltage under load to see where the cut-off is. And 3.3V is everything but "hard on the lithium". 3V is still pretty soft, 2,5V is hard-ish and below 2,5V you get into the hard zone.

Oh.. and by cutting off at 16V in the test you pretty much didnt see ~25% that was still left in there. I extrapolate this from my discharge curves of high quality cells, at 3.2V they are still in the linear zone. This would bring the 34Wh you interpolatet up to 45Wh. And since I have cells here (NCR18650B) with 10.8Wh at 3A load i dont see a problem with 50Wh in 5 cells.

Leo Curious 2500 mAh nominal in an 18650 is perfectly normal, if it is a decent quality cell. The Milwaukee had 10 cells instead of five, iirc, which means it was underrated by a lot to increase lifetime. It probably has 70-80 Wh of nominal capacity. The same way a Tesla 90 kWh battery pack will have more like 150 kWh of raw capacity worth of cells in there.

Buy the highest quality you can afford. You only cry once. You will not find it at HF. Perhaps in a few hand tools, but anything that uses electricity...nah. But, there is a bit to be said for a bunch of $20.00 4 1/2 " angle grinders. Handy to have several with different stones, disks and cutoff wheels mounted. That is the only HF electric too worth having. when it smokes, you toss it.

I agree. I have 4 or more with different wheels. One I have put the narrow belt sander on. I don't even think they sell that kit any more. I am surprised at how long they DO last. I've replaced a burnt cord once or twice, but at that price they are the best deal going.

Every other Chicago brand tool Ive bought has been absolute crap but the "mixing drill" works great.(don't know the exact term but I call it mixer drill since I use it to mix mortar and concrete). So far its lasted as long as my Rigid mixing drill

So far all the HF tools that I bought have been working fine for over a year of constant use, I tried the ridgids, bosch, dewalts and found them to be not much better for example the double bevel sliding miter saw that I got for less than $200 , and so far I havent seen the need to spend 3 times more just to say I own a "brand" name saw. And if I bought 3 of the "cheap" tools they will last me over 3 times more than the brand name ones. A lot of people think that brand name tools are way more rugged therefore they abuse them so they will in the end they will end up lasting less, and if you go to hf and buy tools, know that you will be replacing them at some point, just like you would with any other tool, I guess I have been lucky so far but all the hf tools that I bought are still running ok and I dont feel the need to spend more just to please some snooty douchebag that probably rides a harley and thinks its the best bike out there. Wake up people stop falling for the marketing hype.

I work at a true value and nothing pisses my manager/the owner off more than when people want to return things that they used. We don't get money back for that. A couple of years ago it was so bad that people bought generators and snowblowers before a storm, used them in the storm and then tried to return them! Only a true dickhead would do that!

My gut reaction is to despise these people. However, I can't fault someone for abiding by the policy of the merchant. If Amazon has a written terms and conditions policy which allows used items to be returned (even if only for partial credit), then who am I to judge someone for taking advantage of that policy? Screwing over a mom and pop True Value without such a policy is a dick move - but if Best Buy, Amazon, HF, etc. has a written policy permitting the return of used merchandise, then I think they are fair game (even if I personally wouldn't take advantage of it).
