Enjoyed SPI monsters with my Uni game club. Hard to see them being practical without a big enthusiastic group like that. They are all very playable but there are easier things to get to the table! WiE is one of the more practical ones. My copy has been played most for War in the East. Fully laid out, you can't reach the middle of the map from the edge! Would like to play it again.

Me and paul kramer played my copy of war in europe in 1982 to 1983 at university of houston. It is a VERY playable game with generic units. Its like sn amoeba the size of an elephant. Still have my copy these many years later. Love the fact it has Troy on the map. The map is HUGE and awe inspiring

We played that all the time back in the 1970's and early 80's. My friend dismantled his electric train set in the basement so we could keep it up permanently. Just a few years ago I got a replacement copy and found it had all sorts of additional stuff in it; new rules, variants, and I think even new counters. IIRC, there was someone designing new rules and counters for it on Facebook, and his stuff looked pretty darned good. He came up with a Spanish Civil War scenario that I really want to try some day.

I glued my maps to sheets of foil backed foam and used map pins to hold the counters to the maps; it made it a lot easier but obviously they no longer fit in the box.

A ping pong table is useful for this game

Very nice explanation of this great game. Only minor quibble is that the genesis of War in Europe was War in the East (first edition) 1974, then War in the West came out in summer of 76, with all 9 maps, all the German production spirals and charts, all the western allies charts, and 3 sheets of Axis and 3 sheets of western allies counters, and the standard rules and exclusive rules for War in the West. In very late 76, a War in Europe expansion pack was announced, including 3 sheets of Soviet/Ukrainian counters, all the Soviet charts, and a War in the East (2d edition) exclusive rulebook, War in Europe exclusive rulebook. Played the hell out of this when it first came out, had some great games with friends. It can get very weird if the axis player ignores submarine warfare, because in that case by early 1942, the western allies can mount a successful invasion of southern France and essentially push to the Siegfried line by the end of 43 if the Soviets tie down the excess Axis land forces.

Metro Seattle Gamers played this for about a year and the allies won. Russia took Berlin, with American help. Luther Harris owned the game and played the axis. People can find him on MSG's site, he is still active and really big games, currently playing a WW2 game about invading Sicily.

I got War in Europe in 1982 and have played it many times. It is dated in terms of naval rules but smart players can mod that. You need someone who can play the Soviets or the panzers roll. It’s a great monster game with the right group. Fire in the East and Scorched Earth are more balanced and both require equal teams. Wif is good as well. But my all time favorite is Kingmaker and my buddies and we added Scotland to the game.

1976... I was in HS and playing WitE and Drang... etc. with my buddies. Fond memories of days before adult responsibilities! I still have copies of both, but they haven't enjoyed human touch in years.

I took down my HO train setup and used the tables from that to build a custom table for War in the West with the Spain section sticking out. We played it several times and had a great time. I don't think we ever got past '43 though. Then we tried the WWI module. That was really interesting.

SPI put out a computer version of WiE, 2 player only (no AI). Pretty sure I still have the floppy disks kicking around here somewhere.

I had two of these lovelies. Bought them new. Gave one to my brother and he proceeded to lose it. Still have the one. I also bought two of the Decision Games version. I still have both of them.

This must just be the nostalgia talking, but I love the map!

Couldn't afford that back in the '70s and never picked it up later. More accurately, probably, I wanted modern games and tactical games more, so I never saved up the money for that or WitP. At this point I'd like to own a copy, but I don't think I'd like to own one enough to pay for it. If I were to set up one of the monster games of that era, it would probably be TSS or Wellington's Victory. Or I suppose Fast Carriers, which doesn't have _maps_ that are all that large, but the task force displays take up so much table space that the game has a monster-game footprint.

I have the flat box version of this, under a pile of others like WitP and original TSS. I may have to dig it out and see how well it's aged. Alas, no table space these days for the full spread.

🏆 .. as close as you can get despite Arthur historically unable to attain it 👍👏👏👏; I'm sure there is a good amount of vassal support, but I have played many games using Decision Games PC War in Europe. It runs great, the fog of war is nice, and you can get a turn completed in less than 10 minutes and e-mailed back out.

My Grail games are actually very modern they are 1985 UAIS + 1985 DNL I thought I may have sourced a copy of under an iron sky a few months ago but unfortunately the individual involved used a cowboy delivery firm called BBDS (Billy Bobs Delivery Service ) and I never saw my game . Oh well one day

I would like to have SPI's War in Europe. I already have SPI War in the West. Can I just buy War in the East (2nd) to turn my War in the West into War in Europe or do I have to have the actual War in the Europe game?

There is a Combined Game booklet that as far as I know only appeared in War in Europe. It may be possible to find that booklet online.
