Beauty is important. Some colour compositions cheer me up and energize. There is permaculturists/ecologists who want to impress the public mainstream but their lack of aesthetic sense turns the neighbours off. One Austrian KZbinr who is a landscape gardener and sells wildflower seeds is a positive example for excellent aesthetics. He attracts insects, birds, subscribers and customers.

I usually do flowers in the front yard, veggies in the back. I tried doing veggies in the front once but someone stole them 😅

I like the idea of an edge in your orchard. With my fifty apple trees I had some serious and tiring weed whacking to do early in the season. I will look into plastic mulch for next season. Great video!

If 50 trees go with wood chip mulch if it’s locally available from tree trimming companies. It’s very doable with 50, will reduce the work and do wonders for the trees.

I love messy, wild beauty. It tends to stress some people out. We try to keep the neighbors happy by creating the visible areas neat and tidy. But around the house and garden, I let wild things happen (within reason) and I delight so much in it!

Greetings from Nova Scotia, Canada! This summer I put a fence around my garden (100 X 100) and stopped mowing my garden all together! In no time I had a wonderful country garden with all kinds of wild flowers! And the magic was that now I have wonderful bees all over my garden and all my crops increased exponentially!

Its a reflection on who you are. It is important, but, it might make it easier for you if the garden/farm has a great look about it. Yea!! Mowing means more green for my compost. Yea! Yea, Flowers. good for the bees, Yes!?

I recommend garlic chives! My sister planted them about ten years ago, when we both lived at home. They're gorgeous, low-maintenance, attract bees, and self sow like crazy. My dad had no idea that the fragrant white alliums all over his property were edible until I reminded him about my sister's little herb garden. He thought they were ornamental! I've even been digging up clumps for my patio permaculture, and they have no problem being transplanted.

Aesthetics is but one metric to judge the success of the garden on a macro scale. An area does not need be manicured to reflect an healthy ecosystem, but one that is totally neglected might be more suspect of harboring pests and diseases. Most people who start to garden do not start out as absolute organic enthusiasts. As years go on, they may wish to improve the soil and harvests, so they adapt techniques and products. Next they learn that "organics" is not just a method of growing, but a way of life... Developing good work and life style habits helps to improve personal and environmental health. Aesthetics I believe is a natural outgrowth of improved habits. But HEALTH should be the first metric... just an opinion

Love your orchard paradise My husband and I have clashing aesthetic values. Its a real problem. Mine verge on mismatched variety, curved, woolly, wild wonderland and my husband admires geometrical, straight lines, repetition, traditional monoculture functioning. The only reason we are not yet divorced is that he is too lazy for the hard yakka and is addicted to social media. I just have to be tolerant that he just doesn't get permaculture systems. I have put up with some sabotage such as my husband applying fertilizers and raking up and burning a years worth of chop and drop. Although he is frustrating, he is too inactive to do a lot of damage and I refer to him as a bad weather event. I suggested many times having our own areas (till and no till areas for example) but that didn't eventuate because he just likes giving orders. He knows that I will do the work because I can't stand seeing plants suffering. We are in Chihuahua, semidesert, so plants take a beating with the extreme climate and lack of rain. Gradually he is starting to accept my grasses under the trees because the neighbours are starting to copy. What one thinks is beautiful can change. Who we are trying to please can change. If my pleasure comes from my garden friends ( bugs, birds, squirrels, voles, soil microbes...) I feel obliged to please them and not my husband's friends.

I am so happy that I found this site!! I have been watching "food forest" in southern states for so long and could never seem to find anything in Canada that was this comprehensive. I live in Zone 5B/6A and I am currently trying to find a parcel of land to begin my own journey. I am going to watch your feature film this weekend (maybe next) and had an initial question. My intentions have changed so much in recent years but I believe I have narrowed it down to wanting to grow as much of my own food as possible and then donating any abundance. My question is, did/do you ever have to use any animal products for the orchard? My goal is to create/build/install a vegan food forest and judging by the properties that I have been finding, I may have to start from scratch. I guess another question would be, does the feature film go over "starting from scratch"? Thank you so much! I love what you do!
@StefanSobkowiak
@StefanSobkowiak 4 жыл бұрын
Glad to have you onboard. Yes the film covers starting from scratch however the book goes even deeper including a chapter on ‘On the hunt for a farm’. A very important step. You can get it at: miracle.farm . As far as animals you don’t have to use animals but they can really speed up a transition with their impact and manure. You can keep animals as a shelter and not have to kill them. Look up SHO farm in Vermont how they setup for ducks.

Get whatever is available locally. Surely there are laying hens sold, just use those. You can always upgrade to a fancier breed in the future but the learning is the important step. Keep them moving to clean pasture or yard.

Man great viewing from above with the drone . Do you still do site planning or consulting? Would you be doing a vid on irrigation any time soon? With this vid it would seem that black plastic would be the to go but would take a lot of work installing it and the ir tape and finding a water source etc. One last thing how did or are the rows that you mulch doing and how do they compare to the plastic covered rows?If this is the wrong place for these questions please refer back to the first sentence.
@StefanSobkowiak

Don’t use plastic when less than 200 trees. Wood chip mulch is very doable. Irrigation videos next 2 weeks coming up.

My idea of aesthetics is there are no weeds, just plants that will go in the compost quicker than others. Everything can go in the compost. Museum quality yards are just too anal for me. People need to get over themselves.

Of course aesthetics are important! IMHO there is nothing worse to have to look at than expansive short manicured collections of non indigenous grasses. Except of course if it means the hay was just taken off.

Well, your garden, your wife's garden, it's all ok & lovely!! 👍How about your neighbours point of view on your garden? Maybe they want it some other way? 😳🤔 In Sweden (Europe), neighbours call authoroties & turn in people who like to keep flowers loved by bees & butterflies!!! 😳 It's too overgrown!!! 🧐 Authorities say, it has to be like others peoples! read : "grass desert", some tree ok, with floweredges by/around the house!! 😳 It doesn't matter for the authority that many gardenmagazines, suggest to their readers, to plant meadowflowers in order to keep alive all insects that help pollinating!!! I have seen only 7 - 8 bumblebees this year!!!! 😭 It makes me sad!! But it doesn't matter that same neighbour who called authorithy, is driving around mower (gasfueled) that can cause various disease to human & death to some insects...😭. And never turned in another neighbour that has part of his land looking like a small forest = owergrown... 😳🤔What are weeds? Some people eat wild greens, as dandelion... Love & peace to all! 🙏💓 💕🌍

Well it’s time to call out the authorities on their antiquated views. Remind them that we’re in the 21st century not the 20th or in Europe the 19th. Someone once sang them times they are a changing’.

@@StefanSobkowiak 🙏 Thank You Stefan! Yeah, next time they come & want to check out my progress of making things as everybody else do, I will point out other thowns in Sweden, that have a sign in public places like, "we leave the grass grow for diversity of insect.." (I do not know if it is propper translation...🤔) A person who rapported me is not living on propperty next to mine, though his mother, that he visits... It really is sad & one do not get such persons.. They have a yew growing trough the fence towards my side & I can hardly pass by, but aparently it is ok... If i've had like that, they will "hit the cealing", telling to fix it, so it want make scratches on their cars!!! 😳😳😳 True story!!! I couldn't believe my ears😳! I've asked lady, why authority didn't turn up by those who have overgrown bushes by the road!!??? could do similar thing & tell them what they should grow on their property... Anyhow, i do not talk with them anymore.. I use to ask them several times if they need any help, 2 grown men, around 60, & their mother, 94, my neighbour... They never asked me once... So if cars & gardens are more important then humans, so be it... Love & peace to all! 🙏💓💕🌍

@StefanSobkowiak
@StefanSobkowiak 4 жыл бұрын
1- Non.
