I'm a life long Chester City FC fan but a few years ago they suffered a terrible owner who put all his debts into the club, got us dropped out of League Two because of points deduction for going into administration, and then later was charged for fraud. Sadly, a club that was around since the 1880s went under. Luckily, it was bought by the fans and continues to this day after a couple of seasons hiatus. It's now fully fan committee owned and the city council owns the ground. One day on Facebook I saw a news story that said "Chester to get new stadium". I couldn't believe what I was seeing. My beloved Chester City FC had just gone under! So I ran to the story and saw that it was Chester, Pennsylvania lol! I was instantly smitten by the fans passion, they didn't even have a club yet but they were clamouring for an MLS team. It was addictive! Such spirit. I became an S.o.B the inaugeral year and haven't looked back. I have two jerseys, two hats, three tee shirts, and the need to DOOP! The only downside is that MLS have made it impossible to watch matches here in the UK. Sky may screen matches but they're the 'match of the week' and its bloody expensive. I'd need a premium cable package to watch one game a week which probably wouldn't be the Union. Even MLS Live is region restricted. I'm like "take my money!" And Don Garber be like "nope". MLS in the UK doesn't have much of a stigma anymore. Locally, there's me, a Impact fan, and a Red Bull fan (we don't much talk to him lol). Keep up the good content and if any Union or Bethlehem Steel fans from the UK or the EU are on Facebook, you can find us by searching 'Philadelphia Union UK fans'.

As an English football fan, who has watched MLS, on and off, for many years, I have to say that US soccer ( football, you really have to get over the S word ) has improved markedly over the years. All you need is for your national team to mirror the improvement. I think it is important for US soccer to step up to the level of European and S.. American football. Competition is important. It would also add an extra dynamic to that competition and the power structure in FIFA. Football is truly the peoples' sport.

They're slowly getting to that point. The UK has a 100 year head start on the MLS. Give it time to grow. It'll happen. Also, the fact that our best athletes are playing 3 other major US sports doesn't allow MLS to grow quickly enough.

People making comments about "first teams and relegation" need to understand, the league is still growing, there are new "pro" teams popping up all over America and Canada. Once the teams get established and have a good solid fan-base, then they can consider making them an MLS team, or making a second league...
@jmal
@jmal 6 жыл бұрын
I think that's MLS' long-term plan: make the league large and popular enough that they can add pro-rel without a reduction in attendance, like how MLS slowly did away with post-match penalty shootouts and countdown clocks in their early years.
@MrFelixify
@MrFelixify 6 жыл бұрын
It will never happen though. It's just not how they do it in the US. look at every other sports league in the States. Hockey, Basket and American football have enough teams players and second, third leagues. They still don't do regulation system because of the owner structure.
@PRYVTgomerPYLE
@PRYVTgomerPYLE 6 жыл бұрын
^ You may be correct, however... Football (soccer) is different. The fact that there is a transfer market alone, would separate it from those other sports. No other sport (in America) has that kind of system in place. So I would say it is a 50/50 chance, whether or not it will happen.

I've played with a lot of people from different nationalities, and the guys from the US have been the best athletes by far. However, they barely got in the side because although the smaller lads were less fit, they had a vastly superior understanding and intelligence for football. Sure, this is just from a small sample pool, but it seems that the physical side of the game outweighs the technical and mental sides in America, and at the end of the day the best players in the world play football with their heads, not with their bodies.
@tylerrice7145
@tylerrice7145 6 жыл бұрын
George Read Spot on. Americans focus on the "American style" aka be the most fit, never give up, and bust your ass and fight for 90 minutes, instead of the technical side. Also, another major difference is most of our top athletes truly do go play the big American sports (football, basketball, baseball) unlike other countries where soccer IS the major sport. Also, that's why there's a plethora of solid US keepers because they can translate the hand-eye coordination from US sports they grew up playing. I mean Lebron for example is just a freak athlete. Just imagine if he had focused on soccer his entire life instead of basketball. Scary thought honestly.
@goldennuggets123
@goldennuggets123 6 жыл бұрын
Tyler Rice yeah absolutely that's key that soccer isn't yet the top sport there. Oxlade-Chamberlaine was offered a rugby scholarship but chose football, if he was american and was offered one for NFL/Basketball he probably would have taken it, and there's probably similar stories. The US as an international team have the potential to be a giant, they've just got to work out the right formula that works for them
@Maddskillzz23
@Maddskillzz23 6 жыл бұрын
Does that sound just like an “American” thing? For a long time this has been a criticism of English teams and why when they come up against more technical sides in major tournaments they do not progress. So I do not buy that logic. It’s multifactorial.
@goldennuggets123
@goldennuggets123 6 жыл бұрын
Delmar Smith most of what you're saying is fair, but the culture of football in England has changed in the last decade. The technical and tactical aspect is now treated more importantly than the physical side, with teams like Liverpool showing that by reaching the CL final. Meanwhile the England national youth sides have been winning major tournaments. Yeah sure, physical football isn't just an 'american' thing, but from my experience the physical side seems to be the most important with my (albeit limited) experience
@xIStormer
@xIStormer 6 жыл бұрын
George Read , Thanks for you input. always nice to have an outside opinion. FWIW the "culture" or style of soccer/football is shifting in the US, much like it did in England 15-20 years ago. For example, youth players are no longer allowed to "hoof" or punt the ball from their box, and must play a proper passing and possession game that "plays out of the back". This will make a huge difference in our technical ability with the coming generations. Also places like Atlanta and their mini fields built inside transit stations will help further that technical ability. It'll take decades, surely. But we can get there.

MLS is in an interesting spot to me. The other major sports in the US have so much money going into paying the players. It's just a matter of time before MLS becomes just as big in terms of spending on talent, and it's pretty much a given that the top players in the world will play where there's the most money to be had. If MLS keeps going the way it is it's a given that they'll become one of the top Soccer/Football leagues in the world.

@@danineira366 Depends on whether they can tap the traditional American sport talent pool. If they do that, the best players in the world would be actual Americans. Instead of promoting things with these emo looking characters, they need to go into the inner cities over there and start funding some black kids (no offense to anyone, just being real). You have to snatch them up before they gravitate to Basketball etc. It's a tall order, but if you can nab 30% out of the pool, it's enough to turn the tables.

In all honesty, I stopped caring about #savethecrew after I saw the attendance for your home opener. For a team that's cared for by its fans and is on the line I'd expect a full house. Not necessarily 2015 mls cup craziness but somewhere close. I don't think MLS in Austin is the best idea, and who knows, maybe a law against moving a sports team in this country will hold up for once and Columbus will defy the odds. But now I'm starting to think I'd prefer a Cincinnati MLS club over a Columbus one.

ToonTron 79 the only issue with fans right now is that it's a damned if you, damned if you don't situation. If you buy tickets and merch, you'll get shat on for supporting what Precourt and the league are doing. If you don't, you get your statement about how it shows Columbus doesn't want MLS. Also I want the rivalry between the two teams personally.

I'd like to point out for the record that I posted this before Cincinnati was announced for MLS. Now I just feel sorry for everyone who's a soccer fan in Ohio. The only positive outcome for the league is if Columbus stays. I have, however, just thought of a realistic prediction of the future. Its a crazy one, but a realistic one nonetheless. I think it's obvious to the casual observer that Precourt want's to relocate the team. So much so that he's probably not even considering offers (even though he's technically required by law to open a 6 month negotiation window.). Imagine of someone in central Ohio had the money and charisma to own a team: what would he/she do then? The more you think about it, a modern day encore of the Browns rebirth sounds like an attractive marketing plan for an expansion team. I doubt even MLS could deny that. It seems like a stretch that a Columbus expansion effort would happen, but I think a solid argument and bid could be made even with the limited amount of desired spots remaining.

As long as the academies keep pumping out amazing talent, im all for mls growth! Been following rhe national team for a minute and the improvement in quality is really stark compared to a decade ago. theres a reasom why euro clubs, especially the bundesliga, keeps buying our youngsters. MLS has staked a claim in america and much respect to it for that. I still watch more prem and ucl but i appreciate the talents that the academies have produced recently. World cup 2026 might do wonders for MLS growth. Miguel almiron is killing it for newcastle and dude came from atlanta united.

Definitely the recognition of MLS is growing not just in the UK but in Europe and the rest of the world but for it to take that last big step its really just a case of time and allowing for the growth of team rivalry's which more importantly leads to fans becoming more invested in the club they support and then if the clubs within the lower leagues can grow more so that the league's they are in gains strength then that final piece in the puzzle can played, promotion and relegation. The argument that the investors in MLS sides have too much money invested to lose with relegation is true unless your delusional but this can be got around with by naming the start of promotion and relegation in say 5 years and the financial damage to MLS investors can be made more gentle with parachute payments and then hopefully in time there's no longer a closed investor owned MLS league but instead an independent league with independently owned club sides.

More than anything what MLS is doing for the game in the US is 1) providing an academy developmental system that has been severely lacking for decades and 2) providing a visible indicator that the game is viable here and thus kids can see a potential future in the sport. That can only help to divert some of the elite athletes into the game, whereas they have traditionally transitioned to basketball and american football once they hit middle school. Combine 2 with 1 and there is great potential for the development of American talent.

football in europe isnt the same like in usa. in europe its part of the life. in usa its an event. how do you get young ppl to the clubs? how do fans support their team? how much does a ticket cost? which part of the society do you want in the stadium or which part of the youth. its all about the mentality and the urge for more. in europe, the best player have to fight for the chance to play...always, and this mentality begins in the youth-clubs/camps.

There's no public fields and I sneak on a local community college to play. it's not nearly Florida humidity but it's very close and as I'm typing this the perceived temp is 100F or 38C. Imagine trying to play in that almost every day In summer.

USA Rugby League Fan hahaha!! MLS has come a long way in such a short time, not doubt will be a top league in the world soon however... if the MLS wants to catch up to Europe, they need to stop playing “soccer” and start playing world football. The american approach to the game is rudimentary in terms of player development and how they play value on players. Football is not just about how physical you can be, but how quickly you can make decisions on the field, player intelligence, speed, and natural born talent with eye feet coordination. Also, MLS should change its name to MLAF.

I really dont understand why mls gets the hate they do. I'll admit pre 2010 the league wasn't great. But in the past decade the league has gotten so much better. Put them next to epl or bundasliga then of course it doesn't compare. But put mls next to every top flight league in the world they are easily top 15-20. Even though most americans arent soccer fans, thanks to the population we have more than than nearly every country in the world! Watching the rise of not just the mls but lower leagues too is such a fun experience and study. America really is becoming a soccer country! And I've said this many of times but Atlanta United will become the first soccer team that will be the cities biggest major league sport! Good video! Go Sporting KC!

Without Promotion/Relegation, the MLS will always remain mediocre. There's no pressure for players to further take the game to a whole another level. There are no consequences for teams having a bad season. This is not the NBA, or the NFL. Plus, they have to really fix/improve how they recruit players. Too many kids choose other sports, because football is just way to expensive to participate in.

EasyPeasy Expensive enough that MLS still has salary caps to avoid the mistakes of the original North American Soccer League. Buying big-name over-the-hill players when you're a relatively small team in a niche spot in a saturated sports market is a huge and risky undertaking.

Quite an interesting video that touches on multiple topics very well. I'm nearly 50, English, in England and a Spurs (Tottenham Hotspur) fan. There is no doubt that the MLS is continuing to grow and improve, and that's great for everyone in football globally. I think the MLS still has some hurdles to jump over to become more than just a 'nice environment' for professional football ... I believe the MLS needs promotion and relegation to create a stronger product, and more passion from it's players, fans and owners. I dislike the franchise system, I appreciate why the buy-in system was needed to build the league, but it seems a bit too manufactured and not organic ... the league had to start somewhere, but is there a grass roots eco-system of clubs wanting to get into the league ? As an outsider, it's been fascinating to watch the birth of the MLS, but with no US connections and seeing women's football in England growing rapidly and more organically (in my opinion) ... I'm much more interested in the development of the Spurs Ladies team than watching any foreign club side. I think that's where my viewpoint is most traditionalist, and perhaps a little outdated ... Spurs has been my club for nearly 40 years, has existed for over 100 years ... the MLS, and it's clubs that have existed for less than 25 years still have a way to go ... the foundations have a lot of potential, the structure and character of the league is still developing :-)

I'm from the US and football sucks over here. If you were actually here, you'd see that MLS totally sucks. I do agree with you that MLS needs Promotion and Relegation since it promotes competition and the league will NEVER be better if it doesn't since bottom teams don't give a sh*t if they finish last, there's absolutely no consequence for doing so. Barclays Premier League will ALWAYS be superior to MLS.
