I remember back in '98 or '99 Garth Brooks was getting ready to start a tour, for the album Se7evns I believe. He made a point of holding multiple concerts per city. The rough dates of the concerts were announced with warning that they may change depending on the number of shows per city. In my little town of Casper, WY, he ended up putting on 3 shows. Granted this is before internet purchasing so it was a matter of waiting in long ass lines for the tickets. But during all of this Garth made it a point to try to keep the tickets reasonably priced to as many fans as possible could come. I know the front tickets were like $50-60, which was a lot of money at that time. But the rest of the tickets were like $25-30. I know I had about $150 on me and I was able to get my 6 tickets maximum for friends and I. I will say that Brooks making a point of doing that raised my opinion of him a lot. It is absolutely possible for big name artists to do that if they want. That being said, the merch booths (yes booths) at the venue were HUGE. Probably 10 6' tables at each of the 4 corners of the building. So you know were costs were recouped. lol

Yea, I believe he ended up playing 10+ shows in Minneapolis. It's sort of what Harry Styles did this year with his mini residencies. Played 10+ shows on both coasts then played 5 or 6 in Chicago and Houston (I believe). It's not perfect, but helps cut down on scalpers if you increase supply to meet demand.

What really grinds my gears about M. Shadows is him saying because you’re a fan doesn’t mean you deserve a ticket. So scalpers are more deserving of tickets and taking advantage situations with buying tickets to try and sell them at a crazy cost to fans?
@KeithVlk
@KeithVlk Жыл бұрын
He wasn't saying scalpers deserve it more, he was saying that dynamic pricing keeps the money in the artist camp vs the scalpers making all the profit. Which is true. Scalpers aren't getting tickets and going to the shows themselves, they're getting it and selling to fans who will pay insane $$. So who should get that profit? Scalpers or the artists?
@johnmg88
@johnmg88 Жыл бұрын
@@KeithVlk so dynamic pricing sends tickets prices into orbit meaning if you're not rich enough to spend a fortune you can't go. Cancelling tickets sold through a resale site, making the person named on ticket bring ID or the bank card they pay with would all see less tickets go through scalpers too but nope, his solution is something that puts the ticket price up by ten times face value before it even leaves Ticketmaster
@KeithVlk
@KeithVlk Жыл бұрын
@@johnmg88 The artist has the ability to set their dynamic pricing ceiling. Doesn't have to be unlimited height like Springsteen seemed to be. As far as the other tools, artist and the promoter have the ability to use any of those tools (verified fans, fan-to-fan resale, no resale, staggered presale, etc) during their sale. Ticketmaster is the software used, they don't directly make any of those decisions. Promoter and artist have the power.

@@KeithVlk yep they do have lots of different options, I've seen other ways work just as well or better but Ticketmaster sell that one to the artist as the easiest, the same way they used to offer their platinum tickets. Problem is while it doesn't have to be unlimited ceiling M. Shadows is saying if you're not willing to sell a kidney for a ticket you're not worthy. Outside of the 100% of the door, what M Shadows said is 1000% accurate (and that's only because not all artists get the door deal, maybe AX7 did?). Artist (or someone in their camp) set tickets prices, dynamic pricing thresholds and negotiate merch cuts. Smaller artists have less negotiating power, but nothing we get from artists will cover every artist from clubs to stadiums.

I have no inside info, but my back of envelope calculation is that Taylor Swift's stadium tour is going to cost whoever is running it somewhere between 2-4 million per week. The last tour had something like 450 people traveling on the tour and something like 2,500 people at each venue for setup, teardown and security. She has some investments in touring companies, but it's kind of vague to me as to details.

Now, I haven't gone to a concert in 20 years before I went to see BandMaid in DC in October. They used Livenation, I got a GA ticket for $25, paid another $20 for early entry, but was still behind VIPs that paid about $100. LiveNation owns the venue. BandMaid did not use dynamic pricing for initial purchase, but LiveNation did have "verified" prepurchase tickets for sale after the initial tickets sold out. All that for a band like BandMaid at a 2000 capacity venue is great, so my hat is off to both LN and the band and their management on this. However, here is my issue. I decided to watch from the balcony. There were 3 balcony rows and the front 2 were roped off. Right before the band came out, Ushers started going around and offering the first 2 balcony rows to Patrons at $80 a person. Those seats should have been sold pre- concert.

Ronnie Radke recently told a fan, that had lamented the price of tickets because she couldn't take her son whose favorite band was FIR, that the reason for the price was for costs, fees and "because he knew his worth" and that he "found it offensive that she would even complain" - WTF - I always knew he was self centered, but that tells me he doesn't understand his fans and who they are at all - and I'm sure it's the same for many artists - they've lost touch with the fans that got them to where they are. Needless to say I unfollowed RR - I don't need to deal with people who have their head so far up their ass they need a plexiglass stomach to see daylight.

Sorry, this is so long ... *but it needs to said:* Something that *really* needs to be looked at here is the Live Nation/I heart radio connection. Never mind that the two were made by Live Nation being a monopoly of concert venues _and_ Clear Channel media the owners of the main FM radio stations in EVERY major market in the US. These two companies are *_still_* currently connected. *BELIEVE IT!* And no one is addressing this! A lot of bands have a hard time getting on the radio if they don't first crawl into bed with Live Nation. I watched this very thing happen to some friends of mine. At first, their band's first single was getting great airplay, but when they turned down the _"tour only in our venues"_ deal offered to them by Live Nation, suddenly the airplay dropped ... *in the same week!* And the next single which in my opinion was even stronger got _ZERO_ airplay on the I heart Radio stations. You can guess the rest. And it is still happening today. I find it rather peculiar that there is no mention of the early Clear Channel/Live Nation connection in the history section of the Live Nation Wiki. It starts right off with the merger with Ticket master. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_Nation_Entertainment They built that juggernaut radio conglomerate in the 70s and 80s, as Clear Channel, then Spun off into concert promotion after buying a national concert promoter called SFX, which then it became Live Nation. And once they started buying their own venues, all that was left to acquire was the ticketing. _That_ was when the DoJ stepped in and called "foul". They were threatened with being slapped with anti-trust. So, they divided the radio stations away, made some other concessions to AEG, and changed the radio station conglomerate name to "I Heart radio". All nice and pretty ... _"See? Different company!"_ They also made Live Nation a separate company ... _for a while_ ... Then, they went *back* in 2000 and _bought_ Live Nation back somehow, and nobody said a word. I guess the DoJ thought it was just a huge conglomerate buying another corporate asset. (I'm also assuming that all the right bureaucrats were by then in all the right pockets) mergr.com/iheartmedia-acquires-live-nation-entertainment#:~:text=On%20March%201%2C%202000%2C%20iHeartMedia,Nation%20for%204.4B%20USD But it isn't just that. This evil conglomerate now has a stranglehold on FM radio *_and_* concerts/touring. >>IMHO

Tank, As you well know, AEG and their ticketing company AXS are the only ones within sight of Live Nation / Ticketmaster. There are some major venues in the US that do not use either Ticketmaster or AXS as the primary ticketing for events. Wal-Mart Arkansas Music Amphitheatre, Barclays Center, Wells Fargo Center and Wells Fargo Arena are a few that I can think of at the moment. It is possible to pull off a major arena tour in the US without using Ticket master and a Live Nation venue. But, there would be some major metro areas you would miss. This issue could be solved quite quickly if there was any willpower to pass legislation at either the State or Federal level. First, Primary Ticketing agency for an event can't be a secondary seller. Two, limit the percentage a ticket can sell on the secondary market over the listed price. Third, limit the number of seats for the venue that can be purchased by the secondary market. Fine these ticket agencies if they can't comply. Fourth, set limit on ticketing fees. There are some States that have legislation on some of the above. If you are waiting on the US government to split Live Nation / Ticketmaster that will take years even if this is a major issue of both political parties. The courts will take years to get this resolved Also, the major artists could do something about it. But, Springsteen, The Eagles, etc like to talk about the evil corporations and their greed, but when push comes to shove they are just as greedy. That's fine, just don't be hypocrite.

it's crazy.. if you end up having to try to resell tickets on ticketmaster, they add on another service fee to the sale price and also charge it to the buyer as well, so a potential of 3 service fees for each ticket in that case. which also makes it so you need to reduce your price to get something for the seats you paid, but then there is a minimum price as well.

Today, a german-french documentary TV channel (usually high quality) published a 30 min piece about the high ticket prices, live nation and other players etc... The system is called "dynamic pricing" . Like for example airlines, they have complicated systems that measure or analyse the demand and while the early people get tickets for reasonable prices, the last ticket prices can literally skyrocket to whatever customers are willing to pay when demand is high. And to be honest, they had a good argument: If fans pay 3 times, 5 times, 10 times the price for a ticket on the black market, you can argue that tickets for 100$ are sold under value. And why leave this billion dollar market to shady third parties, if the artist and organisers themselves can lock tickets in these price categories when measuring the demand for it. I think many artists simply think: wait a minute, reseller and people on the black market make 3 times more money with my ticket than I do. why don't i sell a contingent of 1000 dollar tickets for people who want to pay for it. They arent angry about what live nation is doing with their fans. they work together with live nation because live nation has this high end system in place for a functioning dynamic pricing system!

The Artists' management are 'in' on this whole scam. You, 'Tank the Tech' will never be able to find legitimately priced ticket sales, merchandise and concert box office revenues. The major Artist's get paid a pre-determined sum before their shows are even played. Their 'brand' is the bottom-line that gets an assigned dollar figure at the end of the day. It's the 'artists' management in-keeping with a pre-determined promoters, venue owners and ticket sellers agreed sales figure that set the Livenation/Ticketmaster budget profile. Kid Rock let it slip, Beyonce, Katy Perry, the Wknd, the Rolling Stones and KISS are among many others who are guilty of having knowledge of this happening.

What annoys me is when you get older bands and artists doing tours and the tickets are jacked up. This stops younger generations seeing bands and artists your parents cpuld see for £10 back in the day. I know that money is different know than back then with inflation vs wages etc. However pearl Jams recent Uk gig a one off festival in London wqs £90 i wonder what portion went to the support acts and how mich went to Pearl Jam? I am a PJ fan but I guess tickets are high so that bands can make some money once Livenation takes it's cut. Also I hate big artists lole Talor Swift.complaining about streaming, tickets, not getting paid. However I do not have sympathy for artists who make millions and complain. Yes they might not make as much as they think they should earn trough streaming etc but will happily have other endorcements and side.hussles that rake in the cash. This then is not helpful to regular rock bands and upcomers who gwt practicaly nothing becauae the top 10 artists don't care and are selfish money grabbing trash. Look Taylor Swift will have 30 different writers plus herself even if she or they didn't write the song in order to get royalties. Big names do not think about overall wealth, just complain about only getting 2 million from this tour that live Nation got 3 million etc. Yet you take a band like Shinedown who had to cancel Europe tour because of costs, lucky I saw them as they kept UK dates. Yet Taylor Swift will gladly tour the world and make money but still complain. If you hate Live Nation so much cancel your tour go on protest, won't do that due to fact she is probably owned by them and contractualy obligated to do so much touring.

I think the whole industry is going to go through a major organizational switch-up. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw companies like Apple and Spotify start buying up record labels and therefore their artists. Streaming has completely changed how money flows through the industry and for now, expensive tours are making up for the loss of physical album revenues. Record companies no longer own the means of distribution, tech companies do. I truly believe its only a matter of time until we start seeing the Def Jams and UMG's of the world disappearing.

So, I have a question about this that maybe can be answered. It has a bit of a story. When I was young, I remember Ticketmaster being the company you call (yes, telephone) to get tickets mailed to you because you weren't able to get to the venue to buy tickets. Now that the internet is in everybody's pockets and most venues have social media and websites; why can't the venue sell the tickets directly from their sites? I know some venues do it and different arts (stage plays, hobby shows, etcetera) also do this. So, why hasn't this gotten to be the standard and cut out most of the Ticket-nation bullshit? I ask as a pay-at-the-door/box-in-cash guy. Life hack, btw, paying at the door in cash IS cheaper. I must be missing some facts, because I am having a hard time fathoming why people use that company when they can go to the venue and buy the ticket themselves (time and means available, of course).

It goes, in many cases to the artist's record company (or sometimes management and they can be the same thing) and then it depends on what percentage is in that contract as to what the artist receives. With the growth of 360 deals where the label takes a cut of everything (including merch and ticket sales) the label may be taking anywhere between 50 and 90% of what is taken. As streaming cuts into record sales the labels are increasingly using takings from touring to keep them in the style to which they feel they deserve.

Any way to know who does what before buying a ticket? For me, the only thing that would work would have them see lower sales … the rest they don’t understand and would have to rely on governmental agencies to handle something that is very much a first world issue. I recently went to an Alter Bridge concert in a small European country, bought the tickets through the venue website but without going through dozens of companies statutes, how do we know who does what?

I’ll chime in here. Without giving away what band I’m in. My band has been touring professionally for 12 years now. We’ve done everything from opening up on small club shows to headlining theaters, playing festivals etc… besides for like tank said the few really big names 90% of bands today make money strictly off of merch sales. Back in the day opening up for a large tour the 1 of 4 band would make $100 a night. Technically 90 cause 10% goes to the agent. As you move up the bill the price per artist goes up. But even direct support is lucky to make $1000. To this day my band has never not made a profit on tour but it’s solely off of merch. As a headliner we make depending on the market 5-8k a night. In many A markets there will be a backend deal if the show sells out where we split all profits 80/20 with the venue on top of our show rate. But all of that money pretty goes to paying for the bus crew production and our team(Agents, manager…) All the money we make that goes into my pocket at the end of tour comes from selling merchandise.

The Warning may clearly have some tough and smart people (Luis and Rudy) in their team, people that really understand business and that part of music. They simply have to be doing the business a lot smarter than most new bands trying to make it, because there have never been a sign of them being an "poor" new band. But they have also right from the start found sponsors and made deals with brands like Gibson and Orange, used crowdfunding and build a Patreon with 2000+ members. It did also sound like they were able to keep the Patreon (and probably other income sourses) out of the deal, when they in the middle of the preparations for the 3rd album signed with a label.

I had tickets for AC/DC when Brian Johnson had the ear problem supposedly. Well unfortunately for me the tickets were second party and I wonder who sold me them? I'll never know will I could have been AC/DC that f***** me! They don't give refunds for second party tickets just know that! So I paid $400 for my friend and I to be in the nosebleeds in Buffalo and see AC/DC with Axl Rose while the band was good I didn't like seeing the Axle Rose singing and I couldn't get my freaking money back! And no bad should be charging that much yeah they should take a car they got more money than they ever needed. We don't so don't even care about the fans I guess not some people came all the way from Australia to see them in Buffalo.

Of course Taylor has a massive management team to negotiate on her behalf. She’s owns a whole production company specifically for touring. I’m sure she gets the in the final talks to get specifics and actually sign a contract. But for the most part she has a team negotiating on her behalf. Everyone gets paid and a cut. She opted out of dynamic pricing. But the price of the ticket went up not only because of fees but the tacked on VIP packages that you can’t opt out on so that adds $150 per ticket. And not to mention the massive scam of ticket insurance. Add another $60 per ticket. So people are paying $200 extra before the bullshit extra fees. The whole thing is fucked but you bet your ass that I’m going to get my money’s worth.

If this is such a great problem, sell your own tickets. Didin't U2 do that a couple of years ago? When the Huge bands stop using TicketMaster that is when things will change. The rich get richer is not just a slogan. I went to a Journey concert a while ago (I was comped thank god,) the tickets went from $60 to $700 a seat, because they have to pay that type of band HUGE money

I would have thought that the artists that are managed by Live Nation would have an easier time negotiating a lower ticket price. Because Live Nation is basically exchanging money between its own hands it can afford to reduce costs that would otherwise go to 3rd parties. Isn't that the whole argument for conglomerates to exist, to lower 3rd party costs for a product? If we aren't seeing that, then we are seeing pure greed!

I think the big top X00 artists who really fill the bigger venues and make the big money in a global scale are in full controle of the prices and contracts. Live Nation doesnt make rocket science. They dont do anything big artists couldnt do themselves(nowadays) or organize differently. These artists work with them out of convenience and most likely because Live Nation give them deals that are just slightly above the "net cost" . Otherwise, the big artists wouldnt do it. For everyone else, it`s a different story.Normal capitalism!

Taylor Swift is heavily involved in writing her own music (paraphrased). Yes, that's why so many of her exes get called out for one reason or another 🙄😂 Pssst....it MIGHT be you, Ms. Swift. Props to her for writing her own music when so many out there don't write their own radio-hyped garbage. However, there is a huge difference between the amount of talent involved when writing pop music more suited for a thirteen year-old's slumber party and music whose writing exemplifies genuine talent (See Rush, Nightwish, and Dream Theater et. al.).
@godcaoss
@godcaoss Жыл бұрын
This is some elitist bullshit. Dream Theater, for example, sound to me much more like some guys who practiced to hell and now want to show off how mechanically skilled they've become rather than actually expressing themselves through the music they compose. I hear much more soul in any TS song than any of the DT albuns, and that is coming from a metalhead whose favorite band is Nightwish. "Genuine talent" is sometimes just practice, switching tempo and keys around means nothing.

If you or I doesn't like pop music, that doesn't make artists who write pop music "less talented" than artists who we like. It just means that they aren't catering to our tastes, and that's fine.

You just proved that you only listened to her radio singles...u judge her music just by her radio hits... Her last few albums such as Folklore, Evermore, Red (Taylor's Version) r barely slumber party anthems for 13 yr olds 💀💀 it's basically poetry especially Folklore and Evermore albums. And those are indie albums not Pop.
