Unfortunately, the city (brisbane) i lived in has many racist aussies. My friend got spat saliva by an aussie when he wanted to get on a bus cos he's asian. This aussie spat on my friend, humiliated him and asked him to get out of Australia.

Funny all the comments sayimg Aussies aren't racist get a love but your comment about racism is avoided. Also this video has almost two hundred comment; very little in the big scheme. But just see how much racism people are getting over this Novak story. Theres where you can read these Aussie racist comments. That accent kills me because they killed all the Aboriginals who had their own language.

I will say I was so scared of the USA but had an amazing time there, and when I came to Australia I assumed right away it would be good. But in the end it was the worst place out of all 3. Every time I try to figure out if I’m on the right train I get help from friendly Aussies who notice my struggles. I just need to stand there and look around very confused, someone would immediately notice that and tell me what line I’m on. Very kind people.

No, not very kind people. In the city, in Australia one day, I saw an Asian girl that looked very uncomfortable with herself or something. Her English was fractured when speaking, in the mean time I saw an Anglo white male look on, as I asked the Asian girl: Are you ok? In fractured reply she stated WC or washroom, I don't clearly remember wish of the two. I pointed to toilets in the shopping area we were in. She thanked me and rushed off to the toilet. The Anglo male looking on expressed the dissatisfaction on his countenance, and cold almost angry stare towards me. You're European, they will help you first, not the Asian.

From my perspective racism grows on our misunderstanding of other cultures and on behaviour of some individuals of one nation. People are different everywhere even if they are sharing the same race. It's big work to be done in each head. But biologically mixing race is a key to better life for individual. Cheers to Ludwig's family. Inbreeding kills.
@AussieEnglishPodcast
@AussieEnglishPodcast 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've read that the quickest way for a group to become racist is for it to be isolated from other cultures, groups, races and have no experience with them. The moment they come into contact and get to know one another/their culture/etc. the level of racism plummets.

Mate, it would be great to meet you in person and talk about langauage and prospects. I have seen you having a proper English language evolution talk with an English guy: such a satisfying occasion that was. One thing, however, I would like to know your view on is how do you take the fact that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being used in determining langaguage proficiency? Does it make any sense to disregard body languages including eye contact- which I think is as important as your vocabulary - in English test or any language in general? For example, Peasrson Test of English (PTE) which is a very widely accepted English Testing system uses artificial intelligence to assess all aspects of langauage : Reading, writing, listening and speaking.The first three perhaps make sense, but speaking test on such a way is a deliberate attempt to kill language I assume. I have seen people memorsing templates (off course the test has been there for long enough to know how it works and it is far from perfect interms of designing and contruct) and thus, advance English Certificate in hand whereas, when it comes to put their skill in test, they really struggle. In general, English as testing system is long way off from ideal. I am glad, I learnt English as my second language on my own; countries are under illusion that they are taking in people who are good at languages.

The racism thing, it's nuanced. You get treatments that feels racist in area in Australia where the population are largely homogeneous and very little migrants (same rule in various countries in the world). On the other hand, a melting pot like Melbourne you can't spot racist treatments but no doubt there are friction due to mix of values and norms in a democratic country. During COVID there were some anti-social behavior against people with 'chinese' look in Melbourne on social media. That behavior tend to be frowned upon in most of Melbourne, so if you speak up people will help you instead of it developing into a mob behavior. In my case, where I live, the local council have made lots of effort to showcase the work of migrants and their kids for the local community and if I speak back to someone who behaves rudely to me due to my 'asian looks', I know anyone around me will back me up (strangers) as long as I make it known that it's happening.

These questions annoy me, to be honest. There is nothing special about Australian English. A few different words (Many of which come from Aboriginal dialects), a few different pronunciations... but our English isn't really that different from American or British English. Yet, Americans especially, tend to treat Australia as if we're this far away place that is more foreign to them than Mars. We're not a zoo. We're just like you are.

7:38 Do not use "but". Cos you're logically ruining the meaning of sentence before "but". Use "and in the same time" instead.

The absence of your (or Dan's video) acknowledgement of the perpetual racism levelled at First Nations people demonstrated the bias you explain. The absence of us in your accent explanations and our existence is a pertinent response on racism says volumes.
