I know this is a few years old now but I truly don't know what australia he is in. I'm originally from Boston and moved here in the late 90s. . When I got my licence in Boston I has my learners permit for 6 months then my licence was restricted to 6am to 11pm for 2 years unless I needed to drive at night for work. The other thing is the "gas " pumps in Boston before I left removed the detent from the bowser handle so you had to hold the handle. This was because people would walk away and the pump would malfunction and fuel would go everywhere once it was full. This kid is just a winger

The thong thing really annoyed me. Everybody called them thongs until England and America stopped started calling them flip flops, then they complain that we call them what they were always called. Thong means narrow strip of leather, Roman sandals were made of a long thong holding the sole to the foot. If your g string is made of leather then go ahead and call it a thong, otherwise it's not a bloody thong!

I am 80 years old. When I got my licence at 17 (I think) I drove myself fourty or so MILES to the nearest Police Station (in Western Australia); explained that no one was available to drive me in so I came on my own. I was given my licence there and then. Times change.

Regarding the petrol pumps that latch ON. Our Aussie pumps used to do that. There was a small latch on the front of he trigger that you could clip into a pin that went through the handle. For safety reasons, those pins were removed to prevent the pump from being able to be turned on and left. The idea is that as long as you are touching the pump, then pump, person and car are all at the same electrical potential, with no static charge. If you walk away from the pump, you could build up a static charge that could discharge a static spark when you return and ignite your whole tank of petrol. It IS possible to simply poke a paper clip through the holes where the pin used to be and still latch the trigger open (do so at your own risk.)

Those petrol pump clip things are actually illegal in Australia. There were some incidents involving people re entering their car while the pump was filling up, and then returning to the nozzle generating static electricity that would ignite the petrol vapours and cause a fire. It’s too bad, I know some people with arthritis who struggle with holding the pump sometimes and that clip thing might be useful for them.

Are you sure? Static electricity is impossible to occur at the pump, as car's parts around the petrol inlet and the nozzle are made of lead and there are no conductor metal parts that could generate a spark. I've seen the levers on many servos but they were always broken. Maybe on purpose, I'm not questioning that.

From around 97/98 the petrol nozzle clip was fazed out across all states for safety reasons. Remember the old days when you were zapped by your car, especially windy days. It stored charge even after stopping to refuel. Overflow triggers broke causing spill problems. As fill and run theft increased, getting rid of the clip reduced the chance of someone driving off. Shapes of fuel tanks changed making the nozzle difficult to leave unattended while refuelling (NB some truck fuel tanks allow for handsfree). A truckie informed me of all this when I hitch hiked across Australia back in the 90s.

The clip used to be a thing in Australia, but started getting phased out as attended servos disappeared. It does link back to the fallacy of not being able to use a mobile phone whilst at the bowser. It was believed that the mobile reception was causing fires to start when people were filling up. But much later down the track it was found that these fires were started because the 'auto fill' clip was in on the nozzle and people would then get in their cars whilst waiting (use their phones) and build up static from the plastics and cloth car seats. Then when they approach the fuel nozzle when they're done, they wouldn't be properly earthed (grounded for Americans) and would cause a static discharge on the metal handle. Now that we've established two useless nuggets of info in that one story, it also leads into a third... In Australia, you're still allowed to have the 'auto' clip on diesel bowsers as the flashpoint for diesel is up around the 90 degree Celsius. So extremely unlikely to go bang unlike petrol which is like -12 degrees or something

When I was pumping petrol into cars back around 1969/70 there was a switch on the pump so you could put the nozzle in the fuel tank and leave it there to fill the tank while you cleaned the windscreen or talked to the customer. When Australia changed to self service pumps, they disabled those switches for a very good reason. Too many idiotic customers would drive away with the nozzle still in the petrol tank. The Americans still suffer from this problem because they haven't realised that if they disable that switch, people are forced to stay with the nozzle and put it back when it finishes its job.

I'm 40 and I remember when they were banned, I think it was around the same time I started driving, certainly not in 1970 well before I was born 😆 maybe it was just because they were old country pumps behind the times but I'm sure they were around in the 90's, maaaaaybe early 2000's

We used to have those clips until cars started catching fire. We used to have service at the pump but it cost companies too much money so the people who would pump your fuel (gas) wash your windscreen and check your oil. We used to also be able to pay at the pump (and at some stations you still can, but you have to pay first) but with the price of petrol (gas) there was a whole spate of "drive offs" where people would fill their car and then drive off, so they stopped doing it. In America where petrol prices are more reasonable, there is less reason for people to consider stealing fuel (gas).

Those "garbage disposal" units are used in tandem with an automated dishwasher machine. They're needed because when the dishwasher pushes food particles out, they're still too large to make it through the pipes without getting jammed / clogged. The blades chop this up into tiny enough pieces that they're carried out into either a local septic system or local sewer system without issue. You don't throw "normal" trash into them.

Yeah, nah. High end dishwashers will have a macerator which chops up food particles as water is circulated through the system. Garbage disposal units like the insinkerator we have in our apartment are for munging food waste into a paste which can be flushed through the sewage system. Very convenient if you don't have a chook shed in the backyard to take care of your scraps. You can find a range of them at Bunnings.

There is actually another time zone that most people (including Australians) don’t realise exists, and that is a timezone across the middle of the Nullabour! Also another fun fact, the SA timezone goes into NSW to surround Broken Hill which isn’t that far into NSW. Broken Hill is far closer to Adelaide (~6 hours drive vs ~13 hours drive), so a lot of people go to Adelaide for services, education, and if you have major trauma or need a major operation you will be flown by the RFDS from Broken Hill (and other locations throughout the Far West of NSW) to Royal Adelaide Hospital or Adelaide Womens and Children’s Hospital, with other tertiary hospitals in Adelaide provideing support if the first two can’t accept the patients.

I can confirm as a driving instructor that 4 years to get your license coming from over seas is absolute nonsense. In fact if you are over the age of 25 and hold an equivalent license overseas you could book in to take a license test immediately. You would also fail due to not knowing local laws and regulations but you could go for it straight away. If you where under 25 you have to accumulate 100 hours of driving experience and take a hazard perception test then go for your license (The hours differ slightly from state to state).

Beetroot with the Sunday leg of lamb is originally a British thing. Go to someone's house in England for Sunday dinner and often the Beetroot would come out in a separate vessel. I found this mainly in the north and north-west of England. No tipping culture is due to the fact that we pay our staff a liveable wage.

There are countless videos of nozzles being left in cars and people driving off. When you combine, Prepaying for petrol, and a latch, people will just drive off and rip the hose off. There are also other countless videos of nozzles being stuck, and fuel pouring everywhere. It's a safety thing 100%

The Ibis behaviour occurs in areas where their natural habitats, wetlands, have been encroached upon and developed, the birds have learnt to scavenge from refuse tips and come into the city. Brisbane has an issue with these birds in the city as heaps of the wetland areas were heavily developed under the Bjeolkie-Peterson era. Brisbane airport being one area and northern parts of Brisbane. They're an adaptable species and humans are the cause. If they have access to their normal wetlands areas they're not a issue in towns.

In Lithuania beetroot is popular too, like a garnish or soup. In summer is very popular cold beetroot soup also called pink soup... But it's only vegy i hate so much, kinda childhood trauma, but i know it is very good for your health. Here the petrol station are same, self-service and need to go to pay to the shop where everything is hell expensive. If we are talking about underwear, thongs and strings are not the same, similar but a bit different.

From the USA here... I can't believe this kid doesn't understand that timezones are a worldwide thing and in the USA there are a bunch of states that have their own variations of the timezone so he should be aware of it. East coast (Pennsylvania) here and I've always called it a bill not a check, and most restaurants & diners you do pay at the front after your meal. A lot of places in the USA don't have that gas pump locker too. Usually it's due to state or local regulations, occasionally due to what a stations insurance company wants. I've always called them thongs and so has everybody I know, even most of the cheaper ones like he pictured are labeled as thongs. 35 years old, have lived in about 10 different houses between 2 different states and have never had a garbage disposal. That's more of a new construction luxury than any sort of builders grade standard feature or remodel added feature. I've had a friend that had one but that's like the only time I've ever seen one.

In the early 90s, you could use the auto-stop trigger on the fuel nozzle; however, this was a time when things were changing. Big service station chains such as golden fleece, IFS, AMPOL, ESSO and others. Moving away from service attendants and the full service (restaurant, merchandise, repairs etc) towards self-service. The reason for this may have many contributing factors. However, the auto-stop trigger can still be found on some Truck/Heavy/commercial designated High-flow diesel fuel nozzles separated from mainstream fuels or location but rare in appearance. Worksafe QLD (link attached) outlines and explains why not safe but does not say when fazing out was started. However, for static issues on high-flow diesel that are usually located on its own, have an earthed wire that is meant to counteract/redirect/reduce the likelihood of static charge. Some years ago here in Australia I have used petrol pumps that had that trigger on the pump handle that you could press a lever and it would continue to pump fuel while you just waited but I have not seen these pumps for many years.

Yes, back in the 90s when I started driving they still had them. They also still had an attendant at some petrol stations. But there would be one for several pumps, so they would go from car to car and set it up and press the clip, then come back later. The clips are still on the pumps they're just disabled.

With regards to time zones there are more than what feature on the map. Broken Hill although in NSW runs on SA time. There is another time zone when travelling along the Nullabor. Border time which is half way between the two.

The best part of garbage disposal is the fact that your trash doesn’t have any food in it therefore doesn’t smell! My old house had one but my new place does not, I feel like I’m constantly taking the trash out because of the smell!

insinkirators were a thing in Australia (and still can be bought) we have two things that were issues... a high level of personal injuries occurred where people put their fingers in the sink and had them cut off... and secondly putting waste in your sink not only creates blocked drain pipes but our water waste system isn't really designed to deal with food scraps, it can, but it leads to further problems down the line in water treatment. I think they were even banned in Australia for a while, although they now seem to sell them at hardware/plumbing stores so I don't know, the culture never really caught on to putting waste down your sink.

Clips on fuel pumps were common. Allowed the attendant (yes - they used to come and do it for you!) to go and check oil and water levels while it was pumping (of cause it assumed automatic fuel pumps). Has disappeared for safety reasons - the cutout did not always work and it meant that the "filler-upper" had to attend to it... Yes licence to drive has changed over the years. My mother got her licence when the local policeman approached her father and said it was '...about time she got her licence as she had been driving the Buick into town (from the farm) quite a bit..." Ah Thongs! Many years ago (very non-PC) in the Army they were called "Japanese GPs" (or General Purpose boots). Came from I think BCOF (British Commonwealth Occupation Forces) and then Korean War veterans (I served with both)

Pumps had a latch on the triggers but they took them off. On some pumps the latch is still there but they took out the pin that it hooked under. You can tell which pumps have been converted by holes in the bottom of the trigger recess. In one of my jobs I drove a diesel van with a fairly large tank. I put a pin on my key ring so I didn't have to hold the trigger. I think the latches were removed because of some major spill incidents.

Im a British girl, been living in Australia for nearly 10 years now. My biggest creature shock was - ants - seriously they are everywhere in Australia. Lean on a wall: ants, sit on the grass: ants, sit on a park bench:ants. They bite too, even the little ones. Yeah that got me. And grass, it’s not soft and comfy to lie on in Australia - no. In Australia grass is spikey and when you walk on it, it feels spongey underfoot. Oh, and bin chickens. I used to live in Sydney, and yeah they raid the bins there. They do it here in Adelaide too. The word thong sounds totally normal to me now, in fact flip-flops sounds silly now!

Here in my country Indonesia🇮🇩 its similiar with Australia we have 3 different time zone(west, middle & east), I'm from Bali & Western Australia has same time zone with Bali, 🇸🇬Singapore & Kuala Lumpur 🇲🇾 but when you cross Bali ocean to Java the time zone will be 1 hour behind than I wrote above

And you quite right, all the countries that matter have their time zones in union with Western Australia. Now here's an interesting challenge, find which cities in the world that share Sydney and Melbourne's time zones and who is so isolated that they don't matter lol. It's ok it's a local dig between Australian cities. The east coast are always having a dIg at us sandgropers (WA) for being so isolated that we don't matter. But if you live here and you like travelling you know just how far Sydney and Melbourne are from the rest of the world.

We have the the little clip, or brace or holder or whatever you want to call it that will hold the pump on, but they’re all disabled by eliminating the thing that clip would grab onto, I’ve always thought it was just in case it didn’t cut off the bowser and you would end up with a hundred litres of fuel on the forecourt. 🤷🏻‍♂️ so annoying that you have to hold the thing the whole time. We don’t have the clips on the fuel bowser here because where they do have these clips people tend to sit in the driver’s seat waiting for the tank to fill. As they do they’re charging themselves with static electricity and when they get out and attempt to touch the metal one the fuel pump a static electric spark jumps from their hand and ignites the fuel vapours

We used to have the latching fuel pump nozzles (kinda around the same time as full driveway service was an option) which from vague recollection were not fitted to unleaded pumps as the nozzles have smaller diameters. I think there were a fair few nozzles that fell out of the tank filler and just kept pumping on the servo apron.

Come on, mate. You're FAR smarter than that. They removed the ability to be able to clip on petrol bowsers in the early 80's for safety reasons. To stop people overfilling their tanks and when you think about it it makes total sense. Petrol is after all highly combustible and for the minor inconvenience of having to stand there (and therefore supervise) they removed the startling degree of incidents in which petrol stations and cars turned into fireballs which did happen quite routinely - Witnessed it myself. Not once but twice.

Thanks! We moved here from Germany almost 2 years ago and can relate to some, but not all things were weird or even like this guys and you put it. In Sydney hardly anyone stops at zebra crossing. Most fuel dispensers at servos have this lever to block it, but it never works! Interestingly, the only country in Europe where they almost always work is Germany :) agree with birds, we also didn't expect so many parrots everywhere, but in Sydney it's the lapwings that drive me crazy with their screeching at night!

We used to be able to set and forget the fuel bowser with that lever. But there were too many “ over runs” spilling fuel so they were discontinued except for fueling trucksz

I was on holidays in southern NSW near the border with Victoria in the 1970's. It was 2.50pm. No money. Friday. Banks closed at 3pm. Then I remembered Daylight Saving. Drove across the border into Victoria and cashed a cheque (before ATM's- who remember cheques?) A cheque is a promise to pay. Drawn on your account at a specific bank branch. It is NOT paid until it is received by that branch. The branch has 1 day to pay or return the cheque as 'unpaid' - dishonoured . A reason is usually recorded on the back of the cheque - no funds, cheque stopped etc. Banks issue their own cheques called Bank Cheques. They can still be retuned unpaid. There is no legal menition in the Banking Act giving Bank Cheques any certainty they will be honoured. Banks generally will not dishonour a Bank Cheque unless they person requesting it be dishonoured has a good reason - say it was stolen. We used to have the petrol pump lock but it has been removed from pump handles.

I can make the time difference thing even more confusing. I live on the Central Coast, NSW and went for a road trip to Broken Hill, NSW. Despite being in the same state, Broken Hill go by the South Australian time. That confused me because my phone was showing one time, but the clubs and accommodation were all showing 30 mins difference.

We don’t have the automatic pumps because they are dangerous, if you leave them running and go back to your car etc you can build up static electricity and when you grab the pump again you can cause it to ignite, also you run the risk of driving off without taking it out. I think wa has different rules in regard to license, we get our L’s at 16 we can get our P’s at 17 then have red P’s for 1yr which is restricted driving then 1yr on green P’s then you will have a full license. Back when I got my license though it was only one year on P’s and it was a white and red P.

On one of my trips to Australia I stopped in Coolangatta which actually has the Queensland, New South Wales border running right through the middle of the Main Street. One side of the street was actually one hour behind the other. With the help of daylight saving You could go into a bar and leave at closing time and go across the road and still have another hours drinking. Strange!!!

Coolangatta in Queensland was named after a ship that was wrecked off the coast. That ship was built on the Shoalhaven River on the South Coast of NSW and named after a hill that over looks the Shaolhaven River and the coast. The word in the local aboriginal language means splendid view. There is also a village close by with the same name.

His mention of the petrol clip is a little misinformed. Most (if not all) places in the United States, you must remain at your vehicle while petrol is pumping. It is illegal to leave the pump unattended while in operation.

Growing up in country SA, fuel pumps had the ‘lock on’ feature. I reckon the function was removed in the 1990s for safety reasons. Someone may provide further info…..

So funny to compare Australia with France : we do the daylight saving aswell (so annoying!), eat beetroots but not in burgers 😂, we often pay the bill directly at the table and don't tip unless we wanna be kind or thankful for a super service ! We call our Thongs "Tongs" aswell, and we don't have pump clip at the servo (lazy people thing 😉) nor garbage disposal (we have bins for a reason 😂) I love birds in Australia, especially kookaburra (the best alarm clock ever at 4 am 😅) and lorikeets (so beautiful) ...I ll just stay far from Casoar !

Australian males? The author of the video sounds nice but thats unusual, especially if they are divorced. Australia has many opportunities to have a nice healthy lifestyle. Re time, I’m used to it, it’s no big deal. 3 sisters and we live in Qld, Victoria and Western Australia. If ever I forget I have my world clock for each state. Beetroot is gorgeous. Had it since I was a child, and I’m rather senior lol. Totally agree re tipping, saw vid on how much they get paid in USA. We don’t pump gas lol, we get petrol lol. we dont have the petrol pump lock because people turn it on, come to the counter to pay, then forget to take the nozzle out when they go to leave. then u have a damaged pump if they dont have a breakaway hose coupling. or a misissing hose if they do.

The lock-on levar or catch for petrol pumps was a thing before ULP and self-service. When operators served you, they would also check your oil and water and clean your windscreen.

Garbage disposals arent used because, I believe, of the heat - it causes the wrong kind of algae to grow in the water/sewage system and especially on the east coat where the polluted outflows can kill the barrier reef a bit quicker than it is right now

The petrol pimps used to have it. Was removed for safety i believe. If you go to an older place you can see the hole where the pin used to be. When i did my driving tests in late 90's it was :'s for a year then red {'s for 1 year. Then full license.

Re petrol pumps. The lever he was talking about was not actually a lever here, it was a device that clicked and kept the petrol running until the automatic shut off stopped the flow. They were not used on self service pumps. With no operator operated pumps nowadays there are no devices for hands free operation.
