No sh*t, right? The last car I rented, I had to peck through several menus just to change an FM station then change the air flow of the climate control. And, it was so garishly bright at night, and it didn't change brightness when the headlights were on. I ended up throwing a hand towel over the darn thing.

The fact that some cars don’t have real buttons genuinely pisses me off because besides for that one deficit they are great cars, however I would not buy one because of crappy electronic interfaces. If I have to access a frickin’ menu to raise the AC temperature, that is enough friction to increase the risk of distracted driving and create a generally poor experience. 😔

Touchscreens for important controls in cars should be illegal

Came out of a long tunnel and it was raining like hell. Instantly the front window was fogged up and I could only see a very few couple of meters in front of me. As it was a rental electric car, it was a dangerous situation trying to find the AC controls in a unfamiliar interface, driving in 90 km/t with no visibility. I will never buy a car without physical buttons for the important stuff. Same goes for other electronics, if I dust of my PS3, I don't want it to turn on. If I adjust the headset position, I don't want to turn up the volume etc.

Why? Everyone who drives only listens to the same two or three channels so the same radio type of radio that's been in cars for about 70 or so years works just fine. The average American is fat and overweight precisely due to the ease of modern life and not getting off of their asses and actually perform physical work.

My mom's toyota has a balance of touchscreen to physical buttons. For most common functions, it's a physical button (Climate control, volume). There are physical buttons to navigate to specific touchscreen menus, and finally most touchscreen buttons get disabled while the car is moving, and text messages get replaced with "Message content cannot be viewed while vehicle is in motion". The driving wheel has lots of buttons that you can use to do a lot of common stuff that the touchscreen would be for (so you can change the station or change the volume by pressing a button near your thumb). Distinct feeling for each button, so your eyes are focused on the road and your hands are always ready to respond to a road hazard (also naturally forces you to keep your hands at the 9 and 3 position). Plus the touchscreen is quite handy for doing extra stuff like changing between AM/FM radio or bluetooth (the change station buttons now acts as the next/prev song). It's a great car, and I like its touchscreen/button ratio.

When I'm not driving alone, the person that I'm with and engaging in conversation to, has the map and gives me pertinent information when required or asked. I'm the guy who owns the Bolt EUV that was features in a shortcircuit about two years ago. GM has gotten a pretty good setup going between the Bolts and the VIP based vehicles as far as physical buttons goes in my opinion. All the usual controls you expect on the stalks in a GM vehicle are there and they have multimedia and climate controls on physical buttons as well as being accessible through the entertainment system. I really like the design of my Bolt over all, aside from some small hiccups. Now as far as phones go, I go the exact opposite way. Power and volume, thats all I need, especially if the extra button is something like Samsung's Bixby button, which I promptly remapped as soon as they opened up those settings, and then continued to never use anyway. My Z Fold 4 was an amazing phone in that regard (aside from its early retirement due to a failure of the wifi and then cell communication chips) as it only has the three buttons, and then everything else is on the touch screen. I think the reason people like it that way because a cell phone is meant to be used primarily while looking at the device and a car requires you to operate it while looking in a relatively fixed direction. I wouldn't want a gun or a drill to have touchscreen interfaces for the same reason, and I really don't think designers should be fucking with that paradigm, again, in my opinion.

I rented a car 2 weeks ago, and it had everything on the toichscreen aside from the volume. It is actually dangerous how much time you spend not looking at the road, when just changing the temperature. You need to swipe up from a small menu, then hit the exact space where the + or - sign is for the temp. Then close the menu again, rwaching all the way to the passenger side. Yes i have to open and close, bc i want to see the navigation otherwise. That is so much more effort and takes more time than a simple knob i can turn and feel physically. While im all for EVs when the range has improved for my needs and as a techy i have nothing against a good computer inside my car, there are limits. As long as the car isnt fully selfdriving, i need controls to be easy to operate while driving 100mph.

As for Apple's 'Action Button's that's just crappy marketing in trying to make a case for putting a button back onto a phone and pretending that they are pioneers of doing it. My last few phones (all rugged phones) have had buttons that you could assign functions to essentially saving you time scrolling thru pages or menus, so it's nothing new.

Nah, it's just cheaper than real buttons/controls. Also, i don't really see how a button is going to interfere with the antenna any more than the housing itself would. Of course we're talking about 'you're holding it the wrong way' apple here, so nothing would surprise me about something being a design flaw that screws up performance. Personally, i'd love to have physical keyboards make a comeback on phones. Really miss those slide outs.
@hooby_9066
@hooby_9066 3 күн бұрын
Buttons in phones and buttons in cars seem like two very different topics. In phones, physical buttons also cause challenges with water proofing, as well as bend resistance/stiffness. Apart from that, with buyers generally having a desire for largest screen size with smallest bezels - there really isn't much space to put buttons to begin with, and some of that space around the border has to stay empty, to make the phone comfortable to hold. Cars on the other hand... there getting rid of buttons is often a cost-cutting measure. Not that the buttons themselves are all that expensive, but if you have a lot of them, and they also need to get installed and have cables routed to them, and be tested - and you have to deal with the logistics of providing replacements for repairs for many years to come. All taken together that does add up. And the touchscreen is needed anyways, because it's needed for navigation. So you can't skimp on that either.

In cars it's 95% cost reduction and 5% design choice to remove the buttons, although they never publicly admit that. The cost saving is 2-fold: 1st you have the direct savings of not having to design, machine and connect all the buttons; 2nd is a relatively huge cost when re-releasing the same car model with a facelift - you need to update the look of the buttons so you are repeating the design cost and having to change or adjust the machining process. If instead you just put a tablet in, the facelift is as simple as a software update.

I was some kind of square for always wearing a seatbelt every single time, and I could never convince anyone to join me. My Mom who's been to China more often told me about how in newer cars, people get bare seatbelt buckles to insert so that the seatbelt reminder turns off without them having to wear a seatbelt. Another point in favor of touch screen controls - updates. Having the ability to add, remove or just move a button to a better place is convenient for the developer, and arguably for the end user when adding features or reworking interfaces to be more intuitive. That being said, this is definitely taken way too far with cars in particular (but other tech as well) with common controls not having physical buttons, or having capacitive buttons instead.

For some things buttons are simply a must, for the feedback of pushing it, which can be faked somewhat with haptic feedback, but in the first place to feel where the button is. FPS games on phones and tablets suck, you slide/drift off way too easy, do not feel where you are or how much you're steering in your fingers etc. I do understand those buttons mean more connections and possible interference and another chance for errors in manufacturing and water resistance and it look cooler when smooth, but i still want them, and well, in some places, buttons are just cooler and safer too. A screen can malfunction or loser power, controls gone, while buttons elswhere are then not affected and you might still be able to use them, on of the flaws in Star Trek if you ask me.

As you get older it gets harder to see both distance and close up at the same time. You are going to need glasses for one or the other. So driving having to look at a screen is going to be a problem. Maybe voice recognition is the answer. Got to be able to distinguish drivers voice from kids in the back though. For now sticking with my 17 year old Ford.

I'd be even more adamant and make it so regular use controls on cars be mandated to be physical actionables to let the car be usable on the country.

Had rented a car earlier this year and they gave me a 2023 Ford mustang. It has this giant screen and nearly all the buttons were gone and just put on the screen. It made sense but was absolutely annoying to use. I hate this trend. While driving nothing should take my eyes off the road for more than a second and which is why buttons were the best because once you know the car enough, you can just feel the button or the area and know what to press/turn. With these giant screens you get nothing. No feedback or anything

I'd love a physical mute switch, and a hold switch. The advantage of switches is you can determine their state without looking at the screen. Touchscreens in cars is stupid. Look at F1, everything is still done with switches, buttons, dials and paddles.

The perception that fewer buttons on phones makes them sexier is purely manufactured by marketing. Phones with fewer buttons are simpler to manufacture and it can save a significant amount of money. It could be pennies per unit but could save millions of dollars by the time they're done manufacturing that model.

I don’t understand the less button makes it look better, especially in cars. I find it as a lazy design. Button design can look really good or bad and be simple or complicated. The annoying part is in one vehicle, turning down the volume on my steering wheel is in the same position as shutting off the cruise control in another vehicle.

I think talking about this problem from a "design" perspective was an interesting approach but you missed probably the most significant element making buttons disappear in cars (and everywhere else) : the cost and complexity it requires. Putting on physical buttons means that you need to design, integrate and build a physical switch that needs to be precisely thought of. You also need to account for the physical wires and connections to your electronic circuits, which are costly and difficult to route around hidden inside of your device. There is also the problem of wear, a physical button WILL be damaged over time with use and finally break. Touchscreens and touch sensing buttons have no moving part that can wear and will survive for significantly longer than clicky buttons. So having everything on a screen that requires no more connections to implement a new function is very budget friendly when you only need to develop the software once and upload it to your millions of devices without putting more effort (and money) putting said button as a physical element inside the same millions of cars. I'm not saying it's a good thing, I also hate full touchscreen interfaces, but that's the reality of the engineering behind those choices. Edit: typos fixed

I hate cars with no buttons, Like my Jeep, if I want to change the temp or turn it to defrost or change the fan speed, I have to go into a climate menu and go thru 3 touch screen menus to change the temp, but lets not play on our phones. Just look at the the big screen in the middle. Some car brands are even worse.

My car has some buttons, but much of the interface for controlling media is touch only, with exception to just skip tracks. I don't get this and it's awful. Yes, I can use voice to select music, but it still isn't there. It won't know when I mean an album, or have a foreign artist or album I want or song that isn't in English, etc. I don't get why I cannot use some buttons, especially the control pad on my wheel. I coudl navigate my radio and even when my cars hooked up to my mp3 or iPod device, I was able to select tracks, albums, playlists, etc. with just a few key pressed, know where I was, and be done with it. Why haven't we gotten this right already? I should be able to know if I press left left up, I am at albums, or right right down, and I'm at playlists, or what have you, It should also be to where I can just know six pressed down gets me to my playlist I like or press up at the top of the list gives me my newest one I just made.
