The government pays part of the wages for immigrant workers in the service industry. Every Tim Hortons and fast food restaurant is full of them. This has nothing to do with filling a gap, these businesses are incentivized to hire them.

I was one of those TFWs for 2 years, working on a farm. I can’t complain, though-I was paid $16 an hour and had almost free housing, just $130 a month for a room with everything included. After 2 years, I got my PR and left the job. I’ve heard stories from friends about how some employers treated them and about the work conditions. Some employers didn’t even allow workers to turn on the furnace in winter, so they had to file a report. On some pig farms, there were holes in the roof, and snow was falling on the saws and piglets. However, once those conditions were reported, an independent company inspected the site a few days later, and they fired a whole branch of management. In USA way worse than that. I worked there too. The ammonia levels in the barns are 20 times higher than normal. It’s happening on poultry farms. When the guy reported it, they received a call, cleaned everything up, and left the fans running for a few days. Lots of people without documents, working on someone else’s SSN. They offered me to buy one if I’m willing to stay illegally and continue to work for 600$ back in 2016. Yeah.. Just wanted to share my experience.

Anyone working in Canada for any Employer should have at least the provincial minimum wage. Also the basic benefits paid by the employer. If the employer is providing housing then if people are unrelated, one person to a bedroom and at a reasonable rent, Other than that, when the contract is over, the worker should return to their home country unless they have needed skills and are clearly understandable in either French or English. If after two years in Canada they still can't speak our language they aren't trying to become Canadian.

'Contemporary slavery'? That is - and has been for a number of years now -' minimum wage - part time work' - requiring two and three jobs in order to pay one's way! When corporations discovered they could avoid paying benefits in this manner it became a way of life. Once upon a time a person could get a job - with benefits and plan a future - no longer! Never mind the migrant workers - need to get back to fair employment for all Canadians!

50 years ago I worked in tree planting. We hired students and indians. They were paid piece work, x cents per tree. If you were lucky you got minimum wage. But, many of the contracting companies charged "room & board" for living in tents and inadequate food, up to $15-20 per day. If they showed up without the required work clothes, the employer will supply them. Same with smokes. At the end of the season we often had several, if not more, who barely broke even. I have no expectation that things have improved. For the last 15 years I worked with one of the temp job companies. Up to half of the rate they billed the customer was "overhead". We would show up at the office at 5:30-6am and sit. If there is no call I'd leave around noon, unpaid. They would send us out to prebooked calls, or impromptue calls that came in. What sort of work, everything: shovelling snow, construction, picking garbage on road side, warehouses, picking recyclables from conveyor, dishwashing etc. Unless it is pre booked for a span, we never know if we would get work any day. They picked who went out, so don't get on the dispatcher's bad side. No idea what kind of job we would be doing, so we could be working indoors or outdoors, or even in a warehouse freezer in the summer. For years, I would carry a small hockey bag with changes of clothes, until one employer complained "it could be" used for shoplifting. Gimme a break. We could be dropped, banned by a specific employer for no given reason. Yes, we got minimum wage, but not guaranteed hours. I had days where I got there at 6am, sat till noon or later when I got a late assignment that 10 hrs ran to 2am.

As an army cook I've had to change entire meal plans to suit Muslim, vegan, allergies ect...not a problem..but the army in 2012 was filling up with new Canadians. Some from Cuba, Lebanon, Syria.. I am Canadian and I have my beautiful Mexican daughter (my Mexican friend’s daughter actually) and her fiancée live in my house. He was working on a tree farm here in Alberta where the abuse was absolutely horrendous. Working them 150 hours in two weeks and not paying them overtime. Working them 22 hours in a day in -35 degree weather. Telling them that he pays for their visa and they have to pay back $5000 out of their minimal pay to cover this. The company does not pay anything for an LMIA or their visa. He finally put in a claim with the government and they agreed with the abuse but at the same time have allowed other Mexicans to continue to work for this company. I believe there are only 3 Mexicans there now as they are now hiring other foreign workers from other countries. I’m sorry if many of you don’t want foreign workers here but since the pandemic I see more and more Canadian people who just don’t want to work let alone in an industry that is actually hard work.
