Are Canadians really that nice? 2 Hours in Québec

We were 25 minutes away from the border. We couldn't resist.
In one morning, we traveled north to North Hatley, a beautiful town in the Eastern Townships of Québec. The croissants were exquisite and the people were the nicest. The European feel of North is hard to compare to anywhere else in New England. It's worth the hype.

Hi from Quebec ciry. I spent a night à l'auberge de la chocolatière two years ago. Extra cosy, more than the restaurant, not expensive and a fantastic terrace enclosed by the building on one side and cedar trees about 12 foot high on the others. In winter, there is a home made fish & chips kiosk right near the auberge and they are tastefull and extra crispy. But come on, you only dip a part of one toe on two border cities who are mainly english (as are pretty much all border cities in Quebec). Spend a night at the chocolatière and then two hours road to come in Quebec city. There, you will have the real experience in 100% french. Many will understand and answer you in english, you will be welcome.

@@12monkies123 What are you talking about? Quebec is very welcoming to tourism! That sector represented 354 471 jobs in the province in 2022 according to Statistics Canada. Our bigger cities like Montreal and Quebec are very attractive internationally, while many of our small, remote towns rely heavily on tourism in their picturesque setting to survive. We love tourists! That doesn't mean that we like being disrespected by self-entitled and gauche tourists. Just behave yourself and you'll be greeted with open arms!

Les Cantons de l'Est is where I was born and raised. If you're gonna take a day drive up to Canada, that was a very good place to start. Next time, take the extra few hours and drive along the northern shore of the St Lawrence River and visit La Ville de Québec. The Autoroute is on the south shore, and would cut the trip by over an hour, but it's just a boring highway, so don't. The northern shore is among the more beautiful drives in North America. At 400 years old, Québec City is older than either of our countries and is easily THE most beautiful city on the continent. But, go in summer, it looked like Alexa was shivering.

Stanstead. The Eastern Townships were at one time predominantly English speaking as land was given to UEL to settle. Over time the English left, the area reverting to French. There are about 20 or so pockets of English speaking communities remaining.

You should visit Sherbrooke, it is a 20 minute drive from North Hatley and much bigger with lots of things to experience! An english side in Lennox and a french one in Sherbrooke, i'm sure you would love it! And Magog is lovely too!

When I cycle toured through the small towns along old highway on the south shore of the St Lawrence it was one of the nicest places I've ever been, both the land and the people. If I spoke French with any fluency I probably would have moved there.

You could still move here, we are enjoying english speaking people who tries to speak french and help them, and you can live in english in Québec while slowly getting to speak french, lots of us are bilingual to some degree...:)

@@theadvocate4698 I was pulled over at the St Croix Cathedral, working on my derailer, and a van stopped to offer me a ride to a local bike mechanic. A guy from Montreal translated for me at the bike shop and I tried to pay him but he wouldn't take my money. Just one of the typical acts of kindness I had on that stretch of road that wouldn't have happened in many of other places in Canada.

Liberia and Myanmar still use the old system so you’re not alone and some other countries use traditional units in certain circumstances whilst being a metric country still. Metric units for some reason don’t sound good in songs. Places like Palau and Bahamas use metric system or both as well. But use Fahrenheit United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland use English Units for road signs. Have metric only signs is technically illegal but 1 exists that I know of. Petroleum is sold by the litre like Canada but fuel economy is measured in in miles per gallon. In Canada it’s measured by Liters per 100 kilometers. Not all countries do it like that though. Canadian Gas stations that sell by the gallon are as rare as selling it by the liter in the states. In 1842 is memory serves it could be 1824. 48 or 66 years after American independence the Brit’s changed 16 liquid ounces a pint to 20 liq oz/pt There fore 4uk quarts to make a gallon is 5us quarts. Canada followed suit however in the 60s and 70s the final days before centigrade and metrification, things like Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola bottles would display as 16 OZ (1 PT) probably because it’s American made?????? But still the gallon was different

Lived in Sherbrooke all my life. I spent countless afternoons reading on the shores of Lac Massawippi (this is the lake in North Hatley). You actually visited this town at the best time: when it's not jam-packed with tourists (would have been great with a little bit of sun though). I absolutely love the Eastern Townships (Canton-de-l'Est) and know it like the back of my hand. There are many hidden gems, away from tourists (still). It's a really specific place in Québec that you will not find anywhere else. And you will not find it in the rest of Canada either. A mix of english colonial scenery, architecture and history (this is the only place in Québec where the land is divided in townships) with specific french atmosphere. If you go anywhere in Québec outside of the Eastern Township (in rural areas), you're in for more changes in the scenery. Montréal is way overrated. There are great places in Montréal, but a lot of people there are just... Especially since Covid, there is a strong opinion between many people at least here in the region that Montrealers just think they "own the place" wherever they go - I'm guessing this is shared amongst many elsewhere also. The best places outside of the Eastern Townships (for me) would be l'Isle-aux-Coudres and the northern parts of Charlevoix (Rivière-Malbaie). It feels like you're in Norway up there. I wish I could add l'Île d'Anticosti and the Kuururjuaq national park to this list.

The towns in the eastern townships were mostly founded by British loyalists who fought against the Americans during the Revolutionary war. They were forced out of the USA and had to relocate to the Province of Québec. The crown gave them lands between the border and Montreal and they started up from scratch, having lost everything. The townships are beautiful. My wife my sons and I went zip lining and tree climbing in Stanstead many years ago. We also went to North Hatley one summer day for a picnic. There was a band in the town gazeebo giving a free concert. Afterwards we went peddle boating on the lake. We had better weather both days than you did.

@@joshuaandalexa Canadian border patrol, they just want to know if you are smuggling cigarettes or alcohol. US border patrol, I feel like I am talking to an Army Drill Sargeant. I usually give them my Passport before he asks me a single question. Then they ask me the same questions years after years. Where do you live, Where are you going, Why, Did you bring more than $10 000. I don't think I have seen them laugh once. If I go to Plattsburgh for 3 hours and come back and tell the CBP I didn't buy anything, I am pretty sure they will ask me to pull over to check for things I could have bought. Always tell the truth.

Let me plan your next trip ; first, sleep at the hotel Le Concorde you will have a great view of the city for cheap, at the top of the building you will find the great restaurant called Ciel Bistro-Bar the whole restaurant spins slowly 360 degrees, then walk to old Quebec, only 15min away, see the old fortifications like, La Citadelle, the Château Frontenac is also very close.

@@joshuaandalexa The fortifications are authentic from 1690, many sites are within walking distance. The Concorde is on Grande Allée street the most vibrant street in Quebec City, ask for a view of Grande Allée it should be around 100$ USD. The restaurant is upper end 130$-170$ USD for two, in any case look for the highest rated most expensive restaurants I find that they are worth it if you want something new and interesting. Sometime there are free outdoor shows directly on the street, if not, there's the Dagobert nightclub, it's very popular and has a crazy ambiance if you like a big party with electronic music.

@@joshuaandalexa Personally I might recommend the Concorde for the rotating restaurant at the top (for the view mostly), but the hotel itself has really gone downhill in the last decade; it's pretty dated at this point, and not in a good way. There are quite a few nicer hotels in the same price range with a lot more flair and charm, some of them right in the Old City! As I recall there's at least 4-5 of them on Ste. Geneviève street alone, right next to Château Frontenac. ;)

The problem when you come to Quebec is that the language barrier can be a bit painful. We are delighted to welcome Americans, but not everyone knows how to speak English, or only has a basic understanding. However, once you form a friendship with a Quebecer, it's a whole different story, and that's where the magic happens. If you only visit the countryside, you will undoubtedly see beautiful things, but the people might be a bit more introverted, just like in your home country. It's similar to when you go to Mexico - some expression can help you forge connections with the locals. When I see people like you, I am really happy to see that there are curious Americans who are eager to live new experiences. :D P.S. I live close to the place you visited, Stanstead and Sainte-Catherine-de-Hatley. There are still treasures you haven't seen yet.

Haha! The Québécois are already living in the Canadian province that feels the most like Europe! And lots of English speaking Canadians live in Quebec, too! ( with their English Canadian sandwiches!) If you want to experience an authentic English afternoon tea with scones, jam and cream, cakes and delicate sandwiches , I suggest heading to Victoria, British Colunbia to take tea at the Empress Hotel. And, just a friendly tip...in French, when an e or and i follow the letter g in a word, the g is pronounced softer as in the word " range", not hard as in the word " goat".

@@dorisbetts3012 As a European (UK) who's now lived in Canada for 40 years I don't find Quebec any more European than other provinces (lived in Montreal for 2 years). French and English are both European languages and one isn't more European than the other. I also find it odd that people say Montreal feels European due to French colonial architecture yet they don't say Boston feels European due to English colonial architecture. To me, Montreal is a quintessential North American city. Culture, way of life, post WW2 building stock, etc is very North American That's a great thing imo. The only difference is that its primary influence 1750-1920 was France instead of England. Thanks for the tip regarding Victoria, although if I visited my interest would be in experiencing Canadian West Coast culture.

The red brick architecture, the types of windows, the foods, the nplace names, lots of habits of english speaking America come from England... Well, in English, "European" often means "Continental". Although Quebec is definitely North-American, it's distinct French heritage, language and culture are very apparent for American visitors. And yes, I believe Boston must feel quite "European" in the broad sense to someone visiting from, say, California.
