All your thoughts are exactly mine. I hope the co angler experience doesn’t go away. I have left co angling because of FFS. I have also dropped my annual membership from the tournament organizations. It seems to me technology has basically driven me away. I don’t blame the boaters for using FFS. I have never had the desire and time and money to invest to be a competitive boater. But, I do enjoy competing against my fellow co anglers. I have always felt the co angler was necessary to keep the tournament rules in check.

I fished my first tournament as co-angler on Neely Henry a coupe months ago. Really enjoyed the day, was non stop getting after it. The boater was using forward facing sonar along the bank, grass and docks etc. I ended up catching three keepers and the boater culled maybe 4 times. Great experience, I have signed up for another co-angler tournament the end of this month.I hope they continue with co-angler formatted tournaments. I did give the boater 40$ for gas even though he said he didn’t want the gas money.

Hi was reading your comments. I’m a boater looking for a co angler link for the Al River tournament w/e of 9/14-15. If you know anyone please let me know. Been having a hard time finding a link which helps garuntee both of us participating. If a boater doesn’t sign up with a link before the deadline he is subject to getting drawn with another boater which none of the boaters really like because you then have to see who’s boat you use & split the day up front 50/50. Anyway sorry for the long reply but since you were new to process wanted to explain. Thx

I’ve fished a lot of BFL’s mainly as a boater & I think your comments are pretty spot on. One thing I would like to see for fairness purposes is less official practice time. I never fish my home lake so even if I get Thursday & Friday to practice going against locals is tough. I think BFL’s should have one practice day with prior Monday going off limits. This would make things more equal & also cut down of gas & travel costs! Also have a bonus prize for the highest boater + co angler combined weight so this helps the boater work with his co instead of possibly against him. It could be a Sponsor bonus or something but a secondary prize. Just some thoughts. Practice fishing is not fun when you’re holding back on catching. Make these Tourns more “equal & competitive “!!

I’ve been fishing ABA and BfL for 15 years. I chose to spend the extra money to fish as a boater. Even if I fish with an co angler the cost is still the same. I have made a lot of friends having co anglers. Gabe was one of them. It’s just a bonus to have them help with gas and net fish. I’ve learned new things from them catching fish behind me. Bad as I hate to say it. They help keep the competition in line. Some reason a few people have forgotten that integrity and honesty is a major part of this sport. I think co anglers like Gabe will find a way to catch fish behind live scope. But they can just as easily draw lesser angler like me!

Gabe you made some really good points, I have been a co angler for the last 9 years, I have had boaters say they really need to get rid of co's to my face, I get it their boat, their time , the travel, food, gas all of it, but in the same breathe their comment is I was going to fish it with or without you, one of the main problems is when a boater or co do not do well in the first2 events the usually say screw it, leaving the boater or co looking for a link, I think if you are going to fish a tournament series no matter what you should finish it unless some medical or death comes up I get it sometime work gets in the way, but to just give up because you had a few bad events is wrong. I fish the Bfl hoosier and it's a hard series hell two fish on the co's side you might win or cash a check,its a struggle, you can ask any boater that I fish with I do my best to make sure he has what he needs, ice, water, snacks and anything else I can help with, I give 60 dollars to them to help for fuel if i damage something i offer to get it fixed, i understand the cost of it all, but for a boater to say we are a problem and we should be gone is just wrong. Yes, both sides will get that one person that they will say never again, it happens but for a boater to say that a co was the reason he didn't catch fish that is just crazy, as a co we have no say in where we go or how safely we get there, I always ask my boater what is his guide line on where i can and cannot cast and I ask yeah if your done fishing that laydown stump or whatever do you mind if i have a shot at it, I am learning at the same time trying to figure out why he chose that to cast at, not our fault if we so happen to catch the 4 pounder there you moved to the next target. I have also quit fishing an hour to a half hour before we go in if the boater has 4 fish or 5 and is trying to upgrade, yes it sucks but I am there to learn have fun and help. As far as the FSS situation who cares go fish, that is what your there for I have fished with boaters that use it yes it helps them but I have also outfished boaters that use it so it shouldn't matter. I think if you communicate with each other before and during the tournament you both should be okay and on the same plan. Sorry for the novel but this really gets me made as a co I know some are going to say get a boat and tell me how you feel, plain and simple co's and boaters need to work together and stop bashing each other, I have seen professional anglers say co should be gone, funny they all seem to forget how they got their start. Suggestion for all boaters and co angler at the end of the year when you find out next year schedule get link up right then and there and help each other out stop waiting for last minute, ask question and to the ones that answer the comment be cool about don't be an ass hat or a whine bag some of the people are just starting out. thanks for letting me get this out lol. Can't wait to ready all the comments lmao.

The main reason to having a co angler or marshall in the boat is to keep the boater honest. In my opinion as a co angler you shouldn't have to give the boater gas money. You are not on a guided trip. He isn't trying to put you on fish. You are strictly there to keep him honest. Being a co angler is sort of like playing the lottery. Your boater draw has a lot to do with whether you catch fish or not. The only thing you are guaranteed as a co is the chance to observe an angler for the day and potentially learn some tips that will make you a better angler.
@TheTinHorseMonty3 ай бұрын
Gas money helps cover some of the costs the boater encored while they were practicing to find fish. The co is also riding around in the boat all day without having to buy a boat. Plus we are fishing. It's just the right thing to do.

Pretty much agree with everything you are saying. Would I rather not get paired up with a boater that is targeting single fish in open water, certainly, but if it happens I will deal with it. I don't think there is anyway they can get rid of the Co's in BFL tournaments, they need them to limit cheating and many boaters are not going to be able to afford the extra expense. One of my main concerns with FFS in general is the conservation side. I am worried that in the long run it is going to affect our fisheries in a negative way.
@TheTinHorseMonty3 ай бұрын

With off shore FFS fishing being more common I think coangler participation will continue to decline. Especially when boaters are targeting a fish or a couple fish out deeper. Shared weight might make that better. Boater gets their weight and coangler gets best 5 from both. Some recent coangler KZbin videos show issues with fishing chasing FFS and negative effects on cos ie catch no fish.
@TheTinHorseMonty3 ай бұрын
I think you're right about less co participation on certain lakes. Several folks have mentioned the combined weight format. That would be interesting.
@lynnmoss11833 ай бұрын
MLF is in a tough spot in the BFLs. They would need to raise boater fees by $110, to make up for not having co-anglers. A few years ago the BFL raised fees that amount and participation dropped dramatically. They lowered the entry fee back the following year. Some co-anglers travel with boaters, sharing expenses, that would be lost. No matter what they decide, someone will not be happy, Boaters will refuse to be paired with boaters. Boaters don't want shared weight. Majority of boaters don't want LS banned. Boaters don't want higher entry fees. Will boaters trust other boaters on an honor system with no co-anglers? Boat cameras won't cut it, and will be adding another expense. Maybe polygraph anglers, and what's that cost on site? IMO, the BFLs need co-anglers to police each other, so the co-anglers need more incentives to fish. Maybe raise boater fees $25. 90-100% payback all to the winning co-angler ($10,000 for 100 boats), with sponsor consolation prizes for the top 5 or 10. $1,000 bonus to the boater having the winning co-angler. IDK, BFLs are in a tough spot. It could be the end.

The thinking about fishing really changes when it becomes a money winning competition, which is understandable, but I don't think eliminating co-anglers is an answer, especially when FFS is the real issue. The Boater and Co-angler do become somewhat of a team, even though it's not the Boater's job to put the Co-angler on fish, but they both can learn from each other is some situations. We as a fan of bass fishing get a one way view of things alot of times from the pros telling the narrative about whatever topic.. Truth... older co angler programs were done away with because pros would draw a co angler knowledgeable about the body of water and would "help" the pro get a better finish then they would have by themselves... that happened way more often than a co angler hurting a pro some way... also the boater knows beforehand that the tournament he is paying into is a co angler event.. so why be upset.. you knew you was being paired up from the jump... co anglers need to stay in these tournaments if for nothing else than to minimize cheating ... good experience and generally a good time overall...

Fishing is Gambling, it may require long hours, but you don't have a boss or punch clocks, schedule vacations, so it's pay to play. Co anglers are marshals short and simple. When BASS pros spoke up, they replaced with Marshall's. To be a BASS Marshall, it costs 99.oo. rider still paying to police the angler. Classic Marshall pays 500.oo to ride per day. BASS still getting paid by the marshals. If you want to learn from that pro you drew as co boater, I'd just watch instead of fishing out of yhe boat. My boat, my investment, why shouldn't the co boater pay the owner of the boat to fish. Not a fan of co anglers. It's the luck of the draw and that don't test the field. Some boaters are not fans of Co's. In short, you wanna pay to play, get your own ride.

I see both sides as well, i think at this point it kind of is the co's ruining it, and maybe rightfully so with the tech advancing but its always been one of those known things as a co you are at the mercy of the boater. If you join expecting something other than adapting all day and embracing the challenge then you might be the problem. for bfls its what 110 plus lets say 60 for gas average maybe more its been a few years lol. money well spent to have a shot at a check and just fishing.
