Not necessarily!!!! It depends on how he obtained those comics?!!!! My dad bought them at 10 cents each!! And I bought mine at 15,20,35, etc,. To today!! I guess U can say I'm lucky to keep my dad's and mine in nice condition!!! It's not people like me that paid big money, It's smart rich collector's that created a demand for the ART of beautiful stories and covers!!! I could write a book about COMIC'S But I think U got the picture!!!!! 🤔🤗👍

Perhaps not a good investment, but as hobbies go, potentially cost neutral, cheap or a bit of an earner. Lots of other hobbies (e.g., following your local football team, golfing, crafting) just cost money. Plus, we have a lot of fun! :)

Great vid. I agree and alot of your points are solid. Yes, you could always be a "flipper"/dealer and make decent money just like any other side job or full time job ,BUT with all the things that go along with doing it.. Unfortunately, that usually seems to "ruin" the thing/hobbie your doing. Taking all the fun out of it; long hours, haggling over prices, water damage, dropped book, case/cracked case, sibling/wife/GF damage, theft, on and on. I'd have to also agree on the dividends thing. Northrop Grumman stock? or (insert 100's of other stocks here) , not so much worry. I sometimes even forget i even have it; until i see that dividend payment sitting in my account🤣. -Cheers

I think it depends on the comic. For example, do you think, let's say a 9.8 Superman 75 first print, would be worth more or the same 30 years from now? That's the question. If you answer that with a definitive answer, I think we have our answer.
@momoonocollects

You do make a good point that different comics will perform differently, and I absolutely agree. I would say though that just because the value of a comic goes up over time doesn't necessarily mean it's a good investment For example it may go up, but not as much as inflation, so in that case it would be an investment that lost money. Or if you bought a different asset, it may have gone up more or paid you along the way, meaning the comic didn't perform as well as other investments you could have made In my mind this means even though it did go up doesn't necessarily mean it was a great investment. Hope that makes sense Thanks for watching and for contributing to the discussion, I think it's a question valuable for everyone in the hobby

Collected Star Wars, Micronauts, and Rom as a kid. My friend was into X-men comics and I definitely liked the cartoon. Got back into collecting comics I liked again late last year. I haven't spent more than a $100 on a single comic and I don't ever intend to spend more then a couple hundred on one book. Also enjoying collecting manga and collected comics trade editions to read some titles/runs. I'm having fun collecting and reading mostly vintage comics (star wars, micronauts, rom, x-men, conan, elric, D&D, watchmen, secret wars, berserk). I've also enjoyed collecting a few fun small modern keys. I'm only collecting a few modern books to read so far(saga, monstress, star wars high republic). I personally don't enjoy most modern marvel comics because titles have soo many pointless renumbered runs and variants a casual collector wouldn't know what an issue in a back issue bin is. I don't hate my life enough to wade into the charley foxrot that is modern marvel comics but I might consider getting an omni to read if I hear of a good run and it's easy to find what I'm interested in. More likely to pick up magna or an indie cause they aren't stupid to find what you want to read. It's a bonus that down the road one day when I retire and have spare time I can probably sell back some of my entertainment for someone else to enjoy. I enjoyed your vid and subscribed to the channel. Thanks!

All good points. Comic Books are a little bit of a different beast when comparing them to Stamps. Comic Books represent art and pop culture. For example, Superman will always be around. And if a movie flops an iconic cover will never die out either. Finally, I think there's that chance of group of creators/writers making a next big hit. Currently, the only comic books I can recommend today are from the Energon-Verse. The mainstream is horrible. They're thinking the political message can excuse the lack of a good story. However, overall, would I recommend comic books as an investment? No, because I think you hit every point there is to make about the risks to it.
@momoonocollects
@momoonocollects Ай бұрын
Appreciate it! And yeah, I agree, I definitely think comics have a lot more staying power than stamps because of the culture aspect, that's a great point you make I also hadn't really considered the next big hit, just because I agree with you I'm not impressed with the storytelling in the mainstream right now, but that's just me Thanks for watching and contributing to the conversation, really appreciate it!

🎉 Frankly, anyone with an ounce of financial literacy (and is being honest with themselves) already knows that investing in comics is higher risk as an alternative asset class and should only be a small % of an individual’s overall investment portfolio (similar to real estate or crypto, e.g.). Most people would be better off (particularly in today’s market) putting their money in a S&P index fund than comics. Certain savvy comic investors can make money if their investing is done right. But I think for most ‘investors’, the rate of return on their comic collection is less important than the enjoyment of collecting (the nostalgic value) and being part of the comic community. At least it is for me.

Well when you're buying the junk you have one the wall, of course you're not getting any ROI on them. Bitcoin and Artwork doesn't produce revenue, does that mean they are bad investments? Of course not, they are long term holds over time.
@momoonocollects
@momoonocollects Ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment! We'll have to agree to disagree that my comics are junk 😆 And I agree, revenue production isn't the only indicator of whether an investment is good or bad, which is why I made several other points why comics haven't been a great investment for me However I would argue that investments that do produce revenue have an advantage over those that do not. And though artwork and Bitcoin may not be bad investments because they don't produce revenue, it doesn't automatically make them good The point I tried to make in the video is that in my experience comics aren't great investments in comparison to other assets, not so much on whether they are investments in a vacuum
@User8vfjhejf
@User8vfjhejf Ай бұрын
@@momoonocollects they haven't been good for you cause you're buying the wrong stuff, ASM 129 and restored books aren't good investments, best book you shown was detective 140. The stuff on the wall is common stuff. Comics are volatile and if aren't making any money off of them, you're doing it wrong. Real estate is a good investment however, if the tenant doesn't pay the rent, it becomes a liability. Comics are a 20 year buy and hold investment
@NobodyI991
@NobodyI991 Ай бұрын
Offt, I take it you're buying AC #1, Batman #1, AF #15, IH #1 etc. You must be a "real collector" 😂.. Sounds like you'd only buy comics for resale value, rather than what you like! Plenty people buy and sell collections and make more money PA and have less ball ache than renting out properties. The only real gain is when you sell the property (if the market is good that is) If that's what he wants then so be it! What he owns doesn't take away from the points being made. All these big scarce books weren't always that!
@momoonocollects
@momoonocollects Ай бұрын
@@User8vfjhejf yeah, we're going to have to agree to disagree. I buy big first appearance keys, mainly golden and silver age. That's not junk, common or bad buys. Like the detective comics 140 or detective comics 58 or the sensation comics 6 or avengers 1 or ASM 3 etc etc But even if you were right, the points I made remain the same, they aren't great investments because they don't produce passive income, they are more risky (as you even stated, more volatile), the high costs for the book when you buy, sell, and upkeep, the opportunity cost of them not producing revenue and the opportunity cost of the time spent to research, acquire, and sell the books, I could go on And you must be the luckiest person alive to only sell your comics for a gain 100% of the time. I'm happy for you that you've done that, but that doesn't mean they were a good investment even if you did. And it doesn't mean you're doing it wrong if you haven't always profited from comics. Nobody ever gets it 100% right. As you said, comics are volatile And even if you held for 20 years and you made a profit after factoring in the fees/taxes you paid to buy it, the cost to maintain and store it, the fees and capital gains taxes you paid when you sold it, that again doesn't mean you made money. You first had to beat inflation. Even if you did that, you have to factor in opportunity cost. Did it perform better than another investment you could have made? And they answer to that is most likely no. So you still lost That's my perspective on it, obviously you're free to disagree. In this case, we both get to decide for ourselves what a good investment is or not. I'd ask you to refrain from insulting my comics though, as that's not respectful, constructive, or true Thanks for watching and for the discussion

The short answer is NO and its actually a dying market when compared to other collectible. If you have money to burn / throw at, maybe it can be a "possible" investment, but it wouldn't be your primary investment, rather as a 3rd/4th option as a "diverse" portfolio. If you have money to burn or throw at, it would be the Silver/Golden age. Coming from a person who has collected since 2011 (New 52) as an adult. Prior before 2011, the comic hobby was relatively cheap and less competitive. Another issue with comic is it is less fluid meaning you can't really sell it off for a FMV like you can with a stock or house. By the way, Is that a 1st print on that TMNT #1 by Mirage?
@momoonocollects

100% agree, it's definitely not a primary investment but a small portion of an overall portfolio. And yeah, the place to be is silver and golden age keys imo Agree with the liquidity aspect too. And no, the TMNT is 3rd print unfortunately. Some day hopefully I'll upgrade! 😆
