Square Enix's Final Fantasy PlayStation exclusive strategy is a flop. How do payouts work on third-party exclusives and is Square Enix smart to stop? How can the publisher invigorate sales for its games?

Are movies or TV shows better marketing for video game franchises? Can Nintendo keep it rolling with Switch 2? Will Nintendo sue Apple over emulators on the App Store? I think Pach's reaction to Square Enix being not productive highlights the issue. They have pumped out TONS of games (tons of AA to indie aligned games), and 0 marketing of the vast majority. They spend ALL of their marking on FF7 (and FFXIV).

The way they handled Eidos is one thing, but the fact that Square went all-in on the NTF hypetrain, despite it already being viewed with derision by the vast majority of people at the time, just shows their incredible lack of foresight and strategic competence. (And I mean... Babylon's Fall happened.) And of course now they're going all-in on the AI hypetrain. Will they ever learn? Maybe third time's the charm.

Exclusives are ending for Xbox and Playstation, not Nintendo.

I always thought that Sony owned the Spiderman IP and I thought they had to release Spider-Man content every few years to maintain the license. That’s why we get the Spider-Man games mixed in with Miles Morales as well as the animated Spiderverse content being churned out. If they don’t then Marvel/Disney gets the chance to purchase it as they did with X-Men relatively recently.

Sony has movie rights only. To maintain those movie rights Sony has to pump out a movie every 5 years which is why we get stuff live Madam Webb, Morbius with the occasional Spider-verse.

Why limit your game to console which has already hit market saturation? You would see better results on PC and eventually Mobile phones will be powerful enough to run games either natively or via the Cloud with 0 latency.

Well, that title is dumb considering the switch exists and still does, so no, they aren't gone.

Third-party console exclusives. Only so many characters for the title, but you must not have watched the episode before commenting. Switch is also losing third-party exclusives. Remember, Square Enix was doing it with Nintendo too with games like Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince and Octopath Traveler. There aren't many publishers left besides Square Enix that are still signing those kinds of deals. If anything, Nintendo is always the console left out with third-party games.

@@SIFTDGames The Switch has the most games of any dedicated game system ever, surpassing even the PS2. Even if it may not get all of the modern third party games, the Switch's third party offerings dwarf those on Playstation and Xbox.

@SIFTDGames switch has third party console exclusives the new tmnt game, super monkey ball, dragon quest monsters dark prince, hundred line hero, project triangle strategy and more I could go on and on, disgae is normally released as a timed exclusive now for switch before releasing on other platforms too.

You literally just repeated what I said including using the same exact game I mentioned. The vast majority of third-party games the Switch receives do not move the needle for the average consumer. They are there to keep Nintendo fans who only own own console satisfied.

Michael Pachter's feelings towards Square Enix really highlights how uneducated he is towards them and the Final Fantasy brand in general. He states he doesn't play their games and it shows in his answers. To state that they're just redoing FF7 over and over again is misinformed at best and disingenuous at worst. The 7 Remake trilogy is on a whole different scale then simply porting & re-releasing FF7 over & over as he's suggesting, plus to claim they haven't been doing new stuff really highlights how completely uninformed and disinterested he is in their brand as a whole because FF16 literally came out only a year ago, as has stuff like Octopath Traveler 2 and several other titles they've put out. I get it, not everybody is going to be into every big thing, & him being a babyboomer, I'm not surprised he isn't into JRPGs or any anime-tinged or anime-adjacent thing, if you didn't get into anime by you're early 20s, I find it REALLY hard for people to enjoy, let alone be open-minded about anime or JRPGS which are very anime-like in their presentation and character traits, and in general we're all different so we can't all like the same thing, but I still find his take baffling as an analyst because ut really shows his lack of knowledge and understanding of Square's games and why they are popular. Speaking as a fan, Square's problem is an issue of changing tastes in the larger gaming audience, them failing to adhere to their longtime established fanbase, marketing, and of course current market issues. I think there's a lot of oldschool FF fans who feel alienated or have fallen out of the franchise due to the switch to more action-focused combat in the FF games, especially since JRPGs have seen a decent comeback in recent years with stuff like Persona 5 becoming a big hit, even with younger gamers such as zoomers (of which some estimates say that upwards of 80% of zoomers watch anime), I think many of those same Zoomers aren't super impressed or drawn-in to AAA big-budget spectacle games the way previous generations playing games have been thanks to the rise on indie, & I think even those who love anime are probably less into the sort of realistic anime character designs of a FF compared to the overt, straight-up anime designs and cutscenes in Persona. I think of oldschool FF fans, even those open to the more action-style combat are putoff by the weird meta-narrative stuff of the Remake trilogy rather then a mire faithful 1-to-1 remake would've been, I think they've failed to properly market their games (especially their more one-off, AA games such as Harvestella or Diofield Chronicles), & I think not having their games on PC day and date as well as on the Switch where the majority of Japanese gamers are is the big problem since they just aren't supporting the PS5 unfortunately. There might be more to it then that, but this is my observation as someone who actually plays and enjoys a lot of Sqaure Enix releases. Pachter doesn't so he's giving takes that are largely uniformed and really show off a sense of indifference and lack of caring or interest to even make a take to looks at their company's bigger picture, but it is what it is I suppose.

He's looking at things realistically instead of as a fan. The truth is there are Final Fantasy VII spinoffs/remakes/revivals out the wazoo including on mobile. Here's a prior episode where that was addressed: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZmXc3t6iNt-pdU

@SIFTDGames I think that's fair, but the excitement over a FF7 Remake was on a whole other level then any of those spinoff titles, people were annoyed by that stuff, whereas a potential remake was something that had been requested since that infamous 2005 PS3 tech demo was released. So it's a bit of a different context looking at a 7 Remake versus some dumb motorcycle mobile game, because one was clearly in demand and had a lot of heart, soul, and effort put into it while another wasn't, nor was it even requested in the first place. But the nature of the Remake, it being a real-time action RPG with a meta-narrative multiverse twinge versus a more faithful 1-to-1 remake was always going to prove divisive regardless of its execution. So I get the comparison and understand the point he's making, I just don't think it fully fits the proper context of the bigger picture. Anyways, sorry for the ramble.
