For anyone who is interested; When Tiffen created Pro Mist Filters they created the different strengths in order to provide a consistent level of filtration across the range of focal length lenses because the filtration effect increases as the focal length of the lens becomes more telephoto. A 1/4 pro mist (black or white) will be much stronger on a 85mm lens than it will be on a 25mm lens. A common formula for using Pro Mist Filters is 1/2 Promist for 18mm and wider, the 1/4 Pro Mist for 25mm - 35mm lenses, and 1/8 for 50mm and above. This principle applies to all diffusion filters. I hope this is information is useful.

This was very helpful. I just bought a 1/4 k&f and have been having a bit of trouble getting it to look great. I'll play around with it in the 25-35mm range. The effect has been too strong. I think a 1/8 would be more useful to me.

does this apply to the final equivalent focal length, or just the stated focal length in the lens? For example, I have a 35mm 1.8oss for my a6400 which is a 52.5mm equivalent. According to this formula, which one should I get? the 1/4 or 1/8?

@matthewmaccarthy85423 жыл бұрын
@@fineresolve1540 It depends on what other focal lenses you will be using to create images that will cut together with your 35mm. But 1/4 would be a safe bet so you can go to the 1/8 for longer lenses and the 1/4 for wider. I would recommend getting all three and testing them out with all of your lenses to find a formula that works for you. But I want to avoid telling people how to shoot, my only intention was to create an awareness about what Tiffen's intention was when they created Pro Mist Filters.

As someone who loves adapting vintage glass to newer bodies- for various artistic reasons- it makes me cringe to think of how misled someone would have to be to spend hundreds if not thousands on a lens only to put a filter in front of it to ...wait for it...make it appear somewhat vintage and "cinematic" aka soft, diffused, whatever. Besides, the over-used term "cinematic look" is totally subjective to the content at hand and/or the valued aesthetics from each individual viewer., once we understand lighting, when and how to use this or that focal length and stop allowing ourselves being sucked into the latest and greatest game or TREND(s) we should then be able to produce videos with true "cinematic" appeal regardless of some quick-fix hack. @@chasingvenusfilmarts To be fair, even back in the days before digital, when 35mm filmmaking and 16mm were the norm, diffusers were used on lenses that cost tens of thousands of dollars. I believe Stanley Kubrick sometimes used diffusers, as well as many other notable directors. And this was with film. Hi Andy, I remember seeing a discussion on Brandon Li's tiffen review. This other content creator went into detail and even made a video. I enjoyed seeing the discussion unfold. I have found it again to share with you. I edited her text and took her explanation. Eugenia Loli Eugenia Loli 11 months ago Finally, to get a film look (an actual 35mm film look, and now what people think as "cinematic" and "film look" these days), you need to work on the acutance of film, not so much on the colors (that everyone is so focusing on). Digital sensors create a positive film look (like Velvia), and to get the movie look you need the negative look. For that, shoot without any such filters (except an ND or an IR/UV CUT), and then on Resolve fix the colors as you would do normally, and then you will find plugins like: lens blur (set it to anamorphic blur at 1.25), gaussian blur (one dimension only), sharpen edges, contrast pop (0.050), and soften and sharpen (0.500, 0.250, 0) and finally anamorphic 35mm grain. With these plugins you will get the edge off the digital look and you will be getting the so called "thick details" that film/ARRI have (rather than razor thin details of Sony digital sensors). Film has thick details, as if it has lines around objects, rather than seeing every little detail. Keep your footage soft, shoot with vintage lenses if you must. In terms of texture, that's what separates digital vs film: acutance. How details are portrayed, basically. With the plugins mentioned above, footage can now pass for film, very similar in look to Uncut Gems, which was shot on 35mm film. No need for promist or other useless filters. It's a matter of texture processing in post to emulate film's characteristics, not something that a filter can do before light hits the sensor. Because no matter what, the sensor will always opt for the thin details look (positive film look).

You are not far from the dirt on lens, actually you were pretty much on point! I got a dirt cheap lens, that had badly cracked coating, don't ask how. The cracks were so deep you could feel them with nails scratching. So I actually sanded the front element, yeah I know how that sounds. But I didn't care. Then polished it to my best ability. It was sharper in the end, it was unusable before! I considered it a slight win. But removing that coating had the resulting effect of slightly removing contrast and hazing the image. So pretty much the same effect this filter does, I hated it though. I always bumped contrast and dehaze heavily to compensate. Oh and interestingly enough, probably slightly messed up the focal point, as there was literally no difference in sharpness when stopping down. So if you want this effect just polish the front element, or buy a crap fully transparent filter and polish that. Same effect for 5 bucks or so. That said everybody to their own, I hate it. It's just haze. You literally just lose detail, from the cheap glass in front of the expensive lens element. You can do in post lol. You can never recover detail in post though. There is a haze option in photoshop that does literally the same, don't know about premiere or other video editing software I don't use them. You can lift shadows too to lower contrast, that's why cameras have so high dynamic ranges today. Editing was never easier, many look up tables do similar things with added color alterations. If you want out of camera footage, then yeah, but how easy editing is nowdays with a click you can have a default preset you like import footage and a simple click and be done.

Put one of them on the heater for a week or so until it has collected some dust. Then screw the other filter on top of the dusty filter so the dust cant be wiped away. Screw the stacked filter onto the lens. Done. I even glued both filters together so its more or less a single filter. Creates the same effect for cheap.
