Yes. They're still worth it. Phone cameras are pretty dope nowadays, but even an older DSLR can destroy most newer phones with the right lens.

A proper camera will always destroy a smartphone camera due to sensor size and in the case of SLRs, interchangeable lenses. Even a compact can beat a smartphone in photos but imho, you can achieve the same portability as a compact with a good mirrorless with even it's decent kit lens to work with. Some compacts have a lot of zoom but you'd rather have a telephoto for those scenarios where you need some real zoom anyways.

@OldPossum Until you need to use powerful fast quenching flash, slow shutter and rear curtain sync for classic night club work. Or you need to shoot bulb in low light and capture truly amazing high fidelity images there is no substitute for a full frame DSLR with a good lens. Also owning and knowing how to use this kit is becoming an in-demand thing with many photo agencies that would never take an IPhone shooter seriously.

@Emily Bishop photographers capture important moments for the bride and groom specifically, and those are moments that can be lost unless you have a professional photographer. If you hire 50 people to a wedding and they take pictures, almost none of them will actually send them to the bride/groom, and they won't look good either. So it isn't a scam, it's a valid service. Look up what a scam actually is and respect a profession you obviously know nothing about.

Most new DSLR's now have the ability to share photos taken via WiFi (send to Cloud) and/or Bluetooth (directly to smartphone, or smartphone can pick up from camera source). So, that's a plus to have DSLR. On a vacation trip, you can have one dedicated (professional?) photographer with the nice expensive image sharing camera, and be sharing the photo images to your tour group on the fly, or automatically sending to your designated Cloud for immediate backup, or share with friends, that way. Technology is awesome, but can be pricey! And let's not get into talks about privacy security issues that sharing can lead to, if we're not careful on our internal gadget settings. With the "good", always comes the "bad". We must be vigilant to know one with the other.

Yes if you're serious about photography and you don't need a 5D mkIII just the entry level DSLR is fair enough nowadays. Now most people do not give a damn about image quality and smart phones provide good enough photos to say the least. So yeah everything makes sense. It's always the same story. You have the enthusiasts and the average customers. Both with different views and none with an invalid view.

It is similar to the public perception of record players and stereo in the 1970s. Or the SLR cameras versus a Kodak Instamatic. The masses were satisfied with the inferior, but adequate cheaper junk. The high end models were always a rather small part of the market.

Often when you look at a picture taken with a smartphone on a pc, the quality looks awful when it looked pretty good on the phone. When I look at a picture taken with my dslr instead, even when you zoom in the quality looks good and you can see all the details. Even though the camera almost had the same amount of megapixels, it looks better than with pictures taken with phones because the sensor is probably more than twice the size.

The best smartphone on the market can shoot adequate photos under every condition. The cameras with interchangeable lenses will always shoot photos with better dynamic range, better contrast, higher sharpness, and shallower depth of field. Nearly all photographers ignore the the benefits of prime lenses. But those who know a few things about photography will eventually invest in a better lens and better cameras. A similar situation existed during film era. Many people were preferring compact cameras like the Instamatic with cassette films. They didn't bother about aperture or shutter speed or inserted the film correctly or choosing the right ISO or making the best settings on the flash. The were just choosing a flash in case of poor light. On the other hand those with a little knowledge with photography were choosing dSLRs with the lens they liked.

It's more than dept of field, the battery or the resolution, it's about shooting in neutral low light conditions, freezing movement correctly, using remote speed lights, having wide dynamic range for the perfect skin tone and producing RAW files for editing. With phones you can take a decent picture, but over a limited range of distances under ideal lighting conditions and with limited dept of field effect. Even if you manage to meet those conditions every time - your pictures would look decent but would also look the same.

Basically, if you want a 28mm f/10 experience, pretty much what a disposable camera does, your phone is great. Which, to be fair, is very useful to have in your pocket at all times. But even grabbing some cheap Kodak ColorPlus film and slapping it into an old SLR will give you better pure IQ than your smartphone, though the workflow is slow as dirt.

Pretty much what I always say when people bring up that "The best camera is the one you have on you" nonsense. No, I don't carry my camera with me all the time, yes I use my phone when I am just out with friends and see something interesting. But that does NOT mean any phone can come close to replacing my cameras where there is a planned event that I know to bring my camera to. People act like photos of where I parked my car or something silly I saw in a store are something I would care to take with any quality, and that because I don't care about those, I would not care about any sort of vacation or convention or family event either where I would know and plan to bring my camera to.

Its 2018... Still no phone can match my Nikon D700 a 10 year old DSLR. So the answer is f*** no. Also a phone is a phone, its convenient because its always there people don't buy them to use as camera's... If you want a great phone you are looking at $500+ these days, a entry level DSLR is cheaper gives you drastically better images. I love my Google Pixel and its camera but it doesn't produce images that look better than the worst camera(in terms of image quality) I have the Fujifilm X20 which is a point and shoot with a small censor let alone the D700. Phones are used for selfies and food pics 90% of the time and when you do use it for something more serious its always makes you wish you had a REAL camera with you. Its why my Fujifilm X100T is always with me when I travel or go anywhere with the family.

Let’s be real though low end camera sales are being impacted by smartphone cameras capabilities. Professionals will always go with what is pro of course. If my neighbor or friend is spending $600+ on a phone though it’s enough of a camera for them to not want to even buy the cheapest of older DSLRs or point and shoots. It’s actually only helped everyone though because low end camera are going up in price and drastically improving to compete with smartphones, being lead by mirrorless tech. There for the bottom line between consumer, prosumer, and professional camera is a very fine line. There is not as massive of leaps between the $500 camera, the $2k body and the $4k body now.

ANY dslr (and they can be pretty affordable) is going to walk all over a smartphone camera in terms of image quality assuming you have even the most rudimentary idea how to use it. Of course, this only matter's if your either zooming, or making large prints. Most people either never make large prints, or just don't care that much. Especially since most people shun prints altogether these days in favor of digital (nothing wrong with that)

Marc Anderson adding multiple photos together doesn't always create blur, as long as the scene is still. Adding them is great, I messed around with it for a few days, it drastically reduces noise if you stack them, so you can theoretically reach an ISO of 1 with an actual ISO of 800. Granted that would require around 10 pictures. Though I guess they might've been talking about stitching a panorama like thing.

When shooting under sunlight the iPhone uses native ISO (lowest ISO) and that gives very good colors and dynamic range especially if you prefer raw DNG. DNG must be processed with Photoshop express free iOS app or another iOS app that can process DNG. Native iPhone app doesn't give DNG photos, only third party iOS apps like 645 pro or ProCam etc. When the light is poor a tripod for iPhone is essential for good photos. In order to lower the ISO the shutter speed must be slow and that demands a tripod for avoiding blurry photos. A nice app is Hydra which uses image stacking method for low noise photos. However it demands steady hands and the object that you shoot must be motionless.

Whatever shutter or aperture or exposure you change on your smartphone doesn‘t change the fact that at the end of the day, to get the real shot you need a big sensor to catch an amazing clear high dynamic, colour depth, Raw picture without any noise and distortion. Connect amazing rendering different focal length, sharp lenses and link it with high watts flash lights and strobes to get the crazy mindblowing hollywood look. That’s why proffesionals don‘t buy smartphone to shoot. Smartphone only replace cheap 100-300 dollar digital cameras and point & shoot cameras. You're answering the wrong question, it's fairly obvious that a device dedicated to pictures will outperform one that's not. You should be asking "Are digital cameras practical and worth buying for the average person?" That would be a resounding NO. Most people don't even know what aperture and shutter speed even mean, a smartphone will yield them better results, and a standalone camera will be an encumbering useless piece of junk.

The best advantage a phone has: It's in your pocket. When you walk around with a DSLR you are bound to not only be encumbered by it, but to attract unwanted attention. However, in other situations, a DSLR is actually better to blend in. So it depends on the situation. I used to buy cellphones to use as a phone, but after so many times wishing for a good enough camera when I didn't have, I finally gave in and bought an expensive cellphone. The images are actually impressive, if your objective is to only post them online. But when I'm just walking around in my motorcycle I prefer my DSLR, for example, not only for image quality but I look less of a creep when I go to another city and take pictures using it.

I think you missed a major point, one that could be easily be shown in your ISO/F-Stop/Shutter-Speed triangle, lets call this "IFS". A cheap camera my have excellent value in a small IFS range. As you spend more money, you get coverage of the IFS triangle. At first you spend a little to get a lot, then you are spending a lot to get a little. So this begs the question, are you taking pictures in well lit areas? if that is all you do, then a phone is really good enough. This is the case of most of the times you are interacting with people. If you are taking low light, fast action or long exposures, you are going to need to spend a bit more.

As a Photographer I kinda think questions like these are just a little stupid. I totally get that smart phone cameras have come a longgg way, BUT I firmly disagree with this notion of phone cameras being "DSLR killers" it's fricking dumb to say that. However you absolutely can get about similar quality images with a phone camera (and lightroom for shooting raw) IF you know what your doing, the average person doesn't know anything about what goes into creating a meaningful and professional looking photograph. I 100% encourage everyone to get out their and learn how take photos properly, but we need to drop the idea of phone cameras being as good as $6k DSLR's. And that's because phone camera sensors are just way to small. But again almost every professional photographer is going to want the best of the best to get the job done and getting the shots they need, which are usually 2,000ish to 6,000ish dollar bodies and the best pieces of glass (lenses) they can get. So...in short, learn photography so you can pick up any camera and get results, you as a photographer is going to make the photo not the camera, the camera is a tool, learn it know it use it.

+ No matter what DSLR Cameras you get they have settings ISO, Aperture, and Shutter speed, and other settings like continues shooting etc. Phone cameras do not have them. So you can't really experiment with photos on a Phone camera, or do much in my epinine.

- Point-and-shoot camera? Possibly. - APS-C or Full Frame DSLR or Mirrorless with interchangeable lens? Not a chance. - The best compromise? Add-on mobile lenses. Moment, Sirui, Olloclip, Sandmarc, Moondog Labs, Beastgrip, the lot. Okay I know, nearly all of them are meant for iPhones. But Moment have a case and both Sirui and Olloclip got a clip which you can use on Android devices.

Don‘t let the phone industry fool you into having the best camera that replaces all proffessional cameras.

Phones destroyed cheap point and shoot cameras. Not pro DSLR. One more advantage of a phone: easier to carry. So if it's good enough you might not pack the DSLR.

@@youknowwho9247 not quite so ... they are also good on other screens as well. Not everybody needs pictures for printing. I am talking about taking memories of places. Honestly it is a chore to lug my big camera around on hikes. I have a professional friend he has a DSLR of course but even he went for a smaller machine he says full frames are not worth it ... he has a smaller backpack with his camera and objectives, makes his life easier. But that is his job. I am just a casual hiker and I don't live on the photos I make, like him ... I just want them for memories. And a good phone ... is almost just as good for that job.

@@andraslibal I hike with my full frame DSLR and have no complaints. Might be a fitness issue. Personally, I'd rather conserve memories in decent image quality than go for the convenience of a phone and get much, much worse results. Even on my 24 inch computer monitor, the images from my S10+ are unacceptably blurry and grainy. And that phone has one of the best cameras out there. It's simply no contest compared to a real camera.

This was refreshing. Most “phone vs DSLR” videos will slap a 35mm lens on there and shoot at F5.6 then go “see, they’re identical! In fact the phone has more dynamic range!” Well, try making the phone do what a 135mm F2 can do 🤷‍♂️

photography on a phone is like gaming on a phone. If you do it a little, it's just fine, but when you're more serious and passionate about it and you really spend some time with it, it makes more sense to go for a more dedicated(likely also pricier) system.

Based on about 10 years of photographic experience, I prefer camera over smartphone. A $500 camera can easily rival the most expensive phones in term of image quality and features. However, I do think that there are aspects of phones which camera brands could learn from, such as the user interface and the fact that phones use apps. Samsung once did it greatly, but sadly they don't make cameras anymore...
