The pause/break key has some quirks which should've been included in the video, holding it down produces a single keystroke without any repetition. Usually keys held down send a down repeatedly then up once you release the key. Pause/break on the other hand sends a single down then immediately up and nothing when its released, which makes it less than useful in a variety of circumstances.

It's useful as a developer to stop the compiler and go back to editing code. This goes for multiple applications that have long(-ish) running processes. Doesn't have to be on the command prompt. To me this is the main use case, they didn't properly cover it (it kind of falls in the realm of the command line process interruptions, but you're not using the command prompt...).

@eideticex7 жыл бұрын
Shazib Roy In the debuggers you find in IDEs (and external debuggers) the Pause/Break key will trigger a breakpoint wherever you are within execution. In modern IDEs this should trigger your debugging view however you have it set up as if you ran the program to a manually inserted break point. There are also key combinations surrounding it, which for the most part do the same thing as the key combinations most Visual Studio users are familiar with (Step Into, Step Over, etc).

Multiple apps still use the break key for different functions obviously. One of the more common ones in office use is for excel macros. A break key will stop any ongoing vba code in its tracks - very useful for stopping loops and identifying them since it will automatically show the spot it was at in the code processing at the time. (as a sidenote if you're on a laptop and don't have a break key to do that - double tapping the esc key in Excel will have the same function)

Back in the old DOS era if you were to type dir, you would have all the contents of the folder scroll crazy fast, impossible for you to actually read what's there. That's where the pause key came in handy, but you had to be quick like a ninja and double tap the pause button insanely fast in order to methodically scroll through all the directory content. Or you could type dir/w, so that the contents would appear in columns, easing the process a bit.

This is a really handy key that is unfortunately missing from some laptops. Windows uses the sequence Ctrl+Alt+Del to do what the break key was intended to do on modern machines: break to the powerbox or task manager with no possibility for user applications to detect it. On older machines, such as the Commodore 64, the break key (or run/stop) could interrupt the program and drop you back into BASIC. Unfortunately, it will be unlikely that future secure mult-user systems to restore the original meaning of a key that can't be relied upon to be present.
