@@daniasavei1675 it all depends on where you would use it...if you have a downhill bike park near you with chairlift then get it...if not get an enduro.... when i got my bike i didnt even know the difference i just wanted one with a lot of travel and i bought the enduro....i have electric which is nice.....the probably best option is an eletric downhill but thats prob really expensive and heavy and if you dont live by really steep trails it doesnt make much of a differnce in that aspect....sure you could send jumps to flat and get away with it but if ur peddling with a non electric downhill its gonna be a workout.....my advise is find a demo day at a bike park and test a bunch of bikes out...youll probably pick the downhill because its the most forgiving and like this guy said he doesnt even push his bike to the limit its that good.

I have a Pivot Phoenix 29 and I think it’s literally the most perfect DH bike ever for bike park riding. I get a dozen or so days a year at resorts like Vail, Snowmass, and Trestle, and though I know that my enduro-ish bike is fully capable of riding those trails, there is absolutely nothing like a proper DH bike. I actually ride the DH bike more over the summer than I do my trail bike. Obviously a trail/enduro bike is far more versatile, but if you are doing lift-assisted riding often, a DH bike is absolutely the ticket. And I fully believe that learning the kind of stuff you can smash through on the DH bike translates to more confidence on the trail bike too.

DH are the hyper-cars of the bike world. At about 6:23 you can see the difference in the suspension stacking with each hit, DH has plenty to spare, enduro is outa travel. I mean, big hit enduro is 180mm, average DH is 200. You "can" ride park on either or less, but man if you are whooping and the suspension is stacking with each hit, you want to kiss that damn DH bike for saving your ass. I bought my first DH used in a parking lot, nothing about it felt right, it was like wearing clown shoes. The seat, the cranks, the memory foam soft suspension, everything was wonky as hell......until I got it to the mountain, and then all the geo and design came together with perfection. There is nothing like a machine made for a single specific purpose, and then using it for exactly that.

It makes all tracks more engaging than on a dh bike. The only reason i can think I'd want a dh bike is if i wanted to hit massive obstacles or go faster for the same reward but with more chance of damaging myself if i crash. Honestly, i dont think i want any of those things in my life. But yes, Dh bikes look sick, and i occasionally miss my morewood makulu or my mondraker summum, but they were mostly just protecting my ego.

And even in Limburg a DH bike would be overkill. Highest point in our country is just 322,4 meters above sealvl and is called Vaalserberg. Berg = Dutch for mountain, but lets face it; it's a hill. I have so many trail networks with high elevations near me, but often no shuttling access, no friends to shuttle anyways cause community is super weird like that, and bike parks seem like a pretty big expense in general so if I ever do go to say Whistler which is across the water from me, one small ferry ride, I'd just rent a DH bike to ride there, although my local shop said my Trek Slash Enduro would do 90% or more of the trails at Whistler, just maybe not at the same speeds. Unless you live close enough to a bike park with lifts or cheap shuttling, there really isnt much point in owning your own DH bike, not when you can just rent one for that day and but own an Enduro or trail bike for your regular trails. Sure my local Mountain trails would probably be more fun on a DH bike but getting it up there would be a very long walk, some of the grades of the fire roads are over 25% which is really, really steep, sometimes I still have to walk some of it as not to burn out my legs, which is a horrible feeling when you finally do reach a summit and need your legs to function for downhill.

A lot of name brand bikes like YT, Scott have 200mm suspension bikes with quality specs that can be purchased for $3,000 -/+ usd price range which is cheap. I also tried installing a dual crown fork on my enduro bike, that just felt terrible on North shore janky and tight switch back climbs. And honestly, for my riding skill and intensity, I don't even feel that much improvement at Whistler. I guess if you are not intentionally hitting hard and pushing yourself to the limited, you don't really need upgrade your bike by stepping up to DH bikes. At least, the DH bike should be picked by going faster and hitting harder than you already are, other than use the travel to make up your lack of skills and confidence, which will lead to bigger crash.

I'm on a second hand kinda budget, & at this stage i can only afford 2 bikes, a road or now a gravel bike, & a MTB. I found when looking at second hand bikes for around the $2500 NZD & below price range, that i could get a better Downhill bike than an Enduro bike for the same price. Enduro bikes hold their money better, so for the same price you can get a better Downhill bike as far as components & condition goes.. So ive got a 2016 YT Tues that was custom painted ($2100 NZD on marketplace) & then ive spent about $1000 NZD on upgrades/parts replacements. It's not the newest bike, but for an equivalent bike & components id be looking at $6000 NZD new easy.. I should really have an enduro, since i kinda ride my Downhill like an enduro in a way, & despite being only 30 mins away from a lift access bikepark ive never paid for a lift, i make my way up to the top via shuttling, on the public bus up half of the hill, or just even ride/walk it up the 400m hill, which is mission but i can do it. Then i drop into the park for free. If i had bought an enduro for the same price ($2100 NZD) it likely wouldve needed way more fixed, or maybe even had cracks in the frame). To get an enduro with the same specs my Downhill is now i woulda spent $4000 NZD all up, not $3000 NZD. $1000 NZD difference is a big deal on a budget.. So i have a Downhill that i kinda ride like an enduro, & ive found a 32 tooth chainring makes climbing actually dooable, plus the YT Tues suspension design pedals surprisingly well.. So my reason for a Downhill vs Enduro was down to budget/components.. For getting some of that exploration that i cant do on my DH, thats what ive got my Gravel Bike for, which to be honest i kinda ride more anyway, & i think that would be the same even if i had an Enduro. Both Downhill & Enduro bikes are fun, people buy either or both for different reasons. As far as versatility goes, if thats what your judgement criteria is, rather than how well it rides a particular terain, then as far as analog bikes go, a gravel bike is by far the most versatile. But i never think of my gravel bike when im riding my DH bike on a Downhill trail over steep technical terain.. So its different bikes for different reasons, for different moods & different purposes.. No particular bike is "pointless", just suited for a different purpose & a different objective..

Enduro bikes are good for enduro riding, and are reasonably useful for DH. and only slightly more capable than a trail bike. But no enduro bike can match a dedicated DH bike. Enduros have at most a very flexy 7 in. fork compared to a stiffer fork with 8 - 9 - or more inches. And a 6 or 7 inch rear travel, compared to as much as 11 inches on a DH bike. Plus the strength of a DH bike is greater than any enduro bike. 37 lbs. isn't heavy at all considering the capabilities of a DH bike. Finally if you have a DH bike , you most likely don't plan on doing much pedaling with it...............

I am just going off a documentary l watched recently about Taiwan's biking industries and some old pieces l read some years ago. These trails look really easy though and I can't see why you'd ride such enormous suspension on them as an amatuer. I think the challenge is in how to use your elbows and knees to negotiate the bumps. I ride full sus trail bike but my friends ride hard tail on stuff twice as hard as this, Ultra gnarly stuff that I have to dismount regularly. They tell me they would never ride big sus though coz they'd lose their skills.

You ride stuff twice as gnarly as Dyfi Racetrack and your friends do it on hardtails... rightttt 🙄

If you think I’m bragging that’s up to you. I’m not. I’m not a great MTBer at all and I’m taking these trails really carefully because they’re too high level for me. But yes, they ride hard tails. It blows my mind what one particular guy can do. No dropper either. You are welcome to come and ride. I’d show you around and you can judge for yourself

@@japanunfound Dyfi Racetrack is one of the most popular tracks with World Cup DH riders for training, and they ride it on full 200mm DH bikes and still have gnarly crashes. Dyfi in general is considered one of the gnarliest bike parks in the world. If you are only going off the footage shown in this video, then fair enough, as it does not do the place justice. But you are not riding trails twice as gnarly as this, and your mates are definitely not riding them on hardtails, unless you want to claim that you are all better than most World Cup DH riders - something I would definitely call bragging.

Of course I’m judging it on what I see here. I live in Japan, as is obvious. I’m just engaging in conversation based on what I see. I told you I’m no pro. I’m a middle aged duffer. You’d still be welcome though and might be shocked by the wild and untrodden trails we find and ride.

@@japanunfound Well it's unlikely that an MTBer in the comments section of a GMBN video hasn't seen other footage of Dyfi, regardless of where in the world you are from, a lot of which will show just how gnarly it is. Chances are, you've seen plenty and just haven't made the connection. It's the home of the Atherton's and many of the biggest names now live in the area specifically for the bike park, with Red Bull Hardline taking place in the same valley. Not disputing that Japan doesn't have some gnarly trails. I'm certain it does and would love to visit if I could ever afford to. Just taking issue with the idea that Dyfi trails, especially the double black diamond that is Racetrack, are "really easy" and can be done on a hardtail. GMBN actually have a video of Neil trying to ride Slab Track at Dyfi on a hardtail and having to skip some features.

You could have swapped bikes, just so Rich rides it an hour or so to then say what he thinks about it :) Video missed a few opportunities for us to watch longer :)

Does a GMBN video exist where Neil doesn't mention he used to be a pro DH racer? 😂
