The “guard” is probably for cooling or cutting fluids to puddle in. Is drilling a flat surface it’d keep your oil all in one spot

As a new member to the fan club I could sense some humor coming with the anvil skit, well enjoyed. As an industrial electrician, been using mag drills for years and have looked at this to add to my collection. Far as the hole saws go, I would leave those for sheet metal and move to the annular cutter for any real metal with depth. One thing you left out that you might not be aware of, mag drills work great mounted vertically but need to have a way to chain them to the metal you're drilling incase the breaker pops or shuts off. Nice video, well informative and honest keep up with what you're doing and I'll be looking forward to the upcoming releases.

Thanks for your post. You scared me when you were set up on the anvil. Amazing how the saw cut through the rail. I have an Evolution 10" sliding compound miter saw. Love it. Great for cutting everything except for fine wood finish. Unless you can find a fine cross cut blade with a 1" diameter hole, I wouldn't recommend it for fine wood finishing. I also have an Evolution circular saw. Love it too. My advice on the circular saw: be careful of the material binding. Metal and wood grab differently. If you ever felt a circular saw grab because of the wood binding, then watch out when cutting steel with the Evolution. It doesn't just grab, it kicks like a mule and if you don't have a good hold will rip everything out of your hand. It felt like someone hit it with a sledgehammer. It's lightening fast. Probably why the spindle shafts are 1". A 5/8" would have snapped right off. I was lucky I didn't cut myself. Other than that, it cuts through steel like a circular saw through wood. I absolutely recommend the circular saw. Got it on sale at Canadian Tire $119.00 CDN.

The real test is how well it sticks to say 1/8" steel as the mass on which it is grabbing plays a great deal in how strong it holds. I have often thought of getting a Mag drill but two weaknesses and my style of usage hold me off. I especially want it to do overhead work which is an extreme pain to drill but it has to have a no excuses positive grip on whatever it is stuck to. Another thing that is a bit of a drawback with many is the throat clearance (chuck to workpiece distance, or arbor to workpiece at times). You put a long attachment to it and many just are not going to fit especially if you add a drill chuck and a longish bit. For me most of what I am working on is angle stock, round stock and other rather narrow forms. Something the mag has a hard time getting hold of. Plop it in a piece of 2 inch angle and see how well it holds. So I end up with really needing it a few times and in most of those cases it will not work anyway. With a shop stuffed with both wood working and machining tools that is one that will just have to wait on the back back burner. A free one does alter the equation!! For six hundred dollars I just can't justify one. I would not be able to justify one of the three hundred dollar ones.

I had my doubts when you started cutting that rail! That definitely was a nice cut! Who would have thought there would be a carbide circular blade that would cut steel! I've cut aluminum on a table saw before using a carbide blade for wood with a mister for coolant.

Wood carbide blades seem to have a weaker carbide than steel cutting blades. Wood blades Work fine on soft aluminum, don’t last long on steel though

Receiving a free product to do a video is the SAME THING as being paid to do a video. You get $1,000 check or $1k in tools to do the video, it's the same thing. Changing the payment method does not absolve one of the possible problems inherent with getting paid to do a review. Also, the lubrication system on the mag drill is designed to be used with annular cutters and would probably do better with actual cutting fluid (less viscous) as opposed to cutting oil.

I’ve cut railroad track a few times with a quarter inch thick at a time , it’s absolutely amazing , I’ve done it with an abrasive saw , which is almost impossible, because an abrasive saw gets hot and hardens the steel , abrasive saws are hood for cutting light steel and hydraulic hoses ,,if your a serious steel fabricator , u need this tool

I've been looking at this size Mag Drill. I currently have Milwaukee's biggest unit. It's an awesome machine, but it has one big drawback, and that's it weight. I think it's around 80lbs. The weight is fine when it sits on top but sideways or overhead drilling is a big challenge.

I have both of those tools and they are amazing. The chop saw works flawlessly amazing cuts. On the drill I do not use the coolant tank at all I used oil in a can like you do. I like the diablo steel demon with cermet 11 carbide of all the blades I have used on all of my saws. I own the Milwaukee 8 inch hand saw 6370. I love it. I had looked at the evolution on their hand saw, but I went with the milwaukee. I enjoy your shows. thanks.

Hiya. Yes, the annular cutters with the weldon type shaft are much better. The wobble is the combination of the chuck and the hole saw. I have a Hougen, and the annular cutters direct in the spindle are just amazing. Chuck is great for small holes and drill bits, but precision, extended working envelope, and bigger sizes come with removing the chuck and using direct insert annular cutters. No wobble at all.

Just keep your Johnson away from those annular cutters. I did notice that the slider was moving when you were bearing down hard with the 2" cutter. I'm guessing the LH thread is to try and torque it while pressing down, but it seems like it doesn't hold tightly enough to do that. Unless it's basically just a set screw, at which point I agree it doesn't make sense to be LH.

Braking the crust on top of that rail was awesome. As a railroader who has peeled locomotive wheels, I know exactly how hard that steel can get. I wish the mag drill was rated up to 5/8 or 3/4 regular metal bits. I have a project right now that I could justify buying one tomorrow if it was.

Yeah, I was completely shocked that the Hercules hole saws held up. I use Horror Fright tools all the time, but always with the understanding that results may vary. I've had stuff that held up really, really well to some serious abuse. That said, anything absolutely mission critical, I'll go elsewhere for tools. Oddly enough, I've heard good things about their Hercules line, but I'm still cautious since you never know when they'll switch the manufacturing from good things mode to standard Horror Fright QC mode. Still, those hole saws doing that well kinda blew my mind to be honest. The drill is very cool as well. I don't see me ever having a use for something like that, but I do like it a lot.

In a practical sense, I can see the fence guard acting as a means to pool and corral the bit coolant plus it keeps the swarf from flicking around. Question isn't the lock lever spring loaded? I was thinking that you don't need to remove the screw to reposition the lever. You just pull on the lever, reposition and then let it go.

I reckon the left hand thread is so that the more pressure you apply when drilling, the tighter that lock gets.

Discount did not work on the 380CPS. I called about the out of square fence and they assured me that it is square to the blade. Hopefully that issue has been resolved. Big reason for my purchase. It is very hard to cut square and to correct length with an abrasive saw. As well as many other issues with abrasive. They did give me 5% off as a first time customer. Not much, but better than nothing.

I think the locking mechanism is "backwards" because they designed it with the idea that you're standing behind the handle in mind - which as we've seen is pretty silly. You're going to be on the business end of the drill, not behind it, to monitor the work and make sure the drill is staying on center.

Do they not make annular cutters? Giving you a mag drill with no cutters is kinda like getting a toy without batteries. I think it would have been worth their while to include a couple of cutters since the drill will work so much better with them. They are not cheap however. Maybe HF will start selling them. Just not in the Icon line I hope!
