To be fair, not only are these drills, people don't typically throw punches with their less dominant hands quickly or as efficiently as their dominant ones. It would be nice to have a fast-actioned fight but Kali isn't even meant for self-defense, it was meant for aggressive offense and killing the opponent as immediately as you could so the techniques ultimately become too dangerous to perform on people. And while there are factors that should be considered here, is for one, her height and his height gave her the advantages, and two, the reaction timing of your actual opponent, I think she generally taught what was either parry or dodge and then immediately go for offense. That of which - For the short Filipinos at the time - would count as using their all to formulate techniques that even they could use to land an impactful effect on the enemy. Parrying, dodging and your will to kill don't always work but it's the best you can have to win in a fight.

@@kugicaimp192 FMA is complete deadly martial art. Not only stick , bolo, machete or knives but dumog or dirty boxing, slapping, gouging, kicking, choking even biting. It is ugly but deadly. That's the reason why the caliber 45 was invented because the 22 and 36 used by the early America colonialist was not very effective against the Filipino warriors in the early 1900s. Earlier on in April 17 1521 famous explorer died in an skirmish with native warrior Lapulapu. There was no name of the art then. Later on named as kali, escrima, arnis depending on the region of the islands. Now collectively known as Filipino Martial Art or FM A.

Usually you block and hit simultaneously, and there is no gap between the stages of the technique. The block hit disarm hit combination all done fluidly within couple seconds. Probably one of the number 1 rules of learning a practical martial art, if it contains a choreographed sequence as a method of defence, then you already know it's mostly if not all BS. Top princibles of any art: 1.Don't rely on prediction or planning 2 .It has to mostly rely on simple gross motor movements (ie no combos or complicated technical movements, but simple body covers/guards combined with simple strikes or grabs) 3 .It should teach mechanical principle, not rote responses to preset moves 4 .It should adress scenarios/attacks via single or double tempo responses at max. Anything that takes longer than 0.5 - 1 seconds to fully perform/respond it's already too long. 5 .It should never teach "one hit KOs" or "guaranteed victory moves" but rather, "continuous fighting" since most fights end up being a war of attrition, where the aim of the defender is to suffer "less attrition" than the attacker.

All the fancy shit doesn't really work, it's just there to teach some movement patterns. There are also a lot of "stress drills" in FMA where you need to execute techniques under pressure, where you most often find yourself going back to the really basic "just hit the hand"-stuff she showed first.
@TheTimMarshall
@TheTimMarshall 2 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same exact thing. The technique is completely dependent on the attacker not dropping the weapon and clinching, or hoping you’re not disarming a knife (when the weapon could be anything) with your leg. After thinking about it though, my opinion is based on the fact that I was assuming they don’t drill maneuvers to learn how it works, then get masked up and spar with full violence. Which they might.

When done properly it’s just so you can get the movements down. Then hard sparring or some type of sparring must take place to see if you can apply said movements in an actual combat situation. Without resistance training somebody actually actively trying to resist what you’re trying you’re right it never works.

@MrFreak9.1.1 @MrFreak9.1.1 I spent a lot of years training in stuff I was CONVINCED was realistic self defense up until I had a rude awakening at a friendly sparring event. That was hard to go through, not just because I got my ass beat but because I had to grapple with the realization that my years of training were all for nothing. I hope your wake up call is a little less painful! I have hundreds of hours of live sparring under my belt since then and I can absolutely guarantee you that nobody is going to just stand there and wait for you to pummel them. If you see that in a video, it's not sparring; it's technique drilling. I definitely don't appreciate you calling me dumb, that's totally uncalled for and you don't even know me. You'd be suprised how many people have been hospitalised/killed with a 'rolled up newspaper' - look up the Millwall Brick. If you think 'nowadays' is anymore violent than the past then you my friend need a wake up call - people didn't use to carry around rapiers and shit for the look of the thing and bandits/highwaymen/slave-raids and the like weren't just an invention of video games but real dangers people used to have to live around and train to deal with; there was no police number you had to dial, you just had to fight and hope you survived the encounter because if you didn't then you might well just disappear with no news to report your loss or detectives to investigate it - just grieving family and friends who history forgets. The only difference between now and then is gun violence (only in some countries - typically in most nations if a gang has the resources to get guns then they're probably doing more serious shit than random mugging/burglary) and that modern laws have disarmed law-abiding citizens to make us more dependent on the police since we'll be less equipped to the deal with the well-prepared criminals when they do decide to strike. I'm not saying Bullshido doesn't exist (older MA's especially seem to have evolved more for performance in competitions or showing off flashy moves than street use), but your particular criticism is also BS.

Ken’s techniques certainly have the elements of surprise! I thought when he first disabled the opponent with his stick thrusts that he’d now beat him with the stick. Did not expect the DP, double poking. Just goes to show that we must always keep learning, unless your Master Ken, at which point you gave mastered everything.

shit, yeah, i confirm it, Nelita's techniques are correct, she definitely knows what she's teaching. in training the sparring partner is advised to give his hand so the practitioner can practice moves. you basically need to train your mind to react to certain enemy movements so you could properly defend yourself. you have to engrave what was taught to your reactions, if you naturally do a technique without thinking then you mastered it. if it doesn't hurt, you're doing it wrong. some of the FMA techniques especially the advanced ones are dangerous and will hurt alot. you're supposed to be able to save yourself in life or death situations when learning FMA. if you failed to apply it, then there's something wrong with your learning than the discipline.
@lemonaid1796
@lemonaid1796 Жыл бұрын
Thx, i always wondered about the stick holding hand presented all too conveniently for the counterstrike; for training newbs this is fine, but too much and im curious: does this translate to more advanced sparring/fighting? Surely people keep the hand not as exposed when strike for real..? Asking very humbly, not trying to be clever or dismissive.
@lariscea
@lariscea Жыл бұрын
@@lemonaid1796 well, yes, the hand will be conveniently given to your sparring partner for him/her to learn because, when the actual training/sparring gets faster, the convenience of giving your hand to your sparring partner disappears and the teacher can hurt his student. if the student fail to master the correct defensive moves, they'll get hurt alot and some may result to stitches. so basically yes, when you observe the advanced sparring, where any strike can happen at any time, the convenience of giving your hand to your trainee disappears.

Kali is known to be an itegral part of Krav Maga. Most of the "Kali" being shown are the "Aesthetic Version", people must understand that Filipinos are petite/small framed, so a quick and swift strike is the key. True FMA/Kali is a concept, it has very little regard with form, but rather it focuses on intent to create injury, incapacitate/neutralize the opposition swiftly. "Buntalan" Filipino boxing aims for the eyes, temple, nose, neck, solar plexus/sternum, stomach.

Stick fighting in Krav Maga is very limited and usually only taught at high ranks or LEO Krav Maga because the use of a flashlight or baton etc. The technique she showed works well with a similar sized weapon but unarmed, Krav Maga offers better solutions to an impact weapon attack.

That's true. The use of rattan sticks started only when Spanish colonizers banned the use of the sword, so Filipinos switch from swords to sticks and are practicing the martial art secretly. Despite the ban, Filipinos still beat the sh**t out of those spaniards .
