I'm Filipino born and raised in the U.S., and my best friend is Indian, also born and raised in the U.S. We both knew we were Asian because that's the continent where our parents' respective countries are located. Imagine our confusion when, growing up, people kept saying I was Hispanic/Pacific Islander and my friend was Middle Eastern. It gave us both unnecessary identity crises for a few years, when in reality we were right all along: we're Asian.
@andrearoces85977 ай бұрын
You belong to the same continent but Asia is really large which in reality you are really different from each other since Filipinos and Indians have different genetics, looks and culture. Only the people of the world divide the land to continents and it happened that you were included in the same piece of large land but if the division tried to divide Asia into other two continents then you would probably accept that you would be different.

The accent has the heavy R sound that countries like Australia and England don't have, very American sounding and they use this sound when talking to foreigners. The R becomes more Spanish and they tend to roll it when speaking Espanol or Tagalog. Most Filipinos can pronounce the F sound like when they want to say Philippines, however usually substitute the F for a P because of their language. B and V are also indistinguishable

In fact, the eastern portion of Russia, mostly encompassing Siberia, is part of Asia and makes up more than 75% of the territory. The people in that portion of Russia are considered as Asians.

Like Arab people in West Asia, people in the eastern part of Russia, Melanesian in Indonesia, Pakistanis and Indians. I honestly don't get why you said "so you think that race is based on the continent?" because I did not even mention any thing about race in my comment. Im Indonesian. I always consider Filipinos as our brothers and sisters in Southeast Asia family. Yes we are asian. But we are also part of the bigger Austronesian family spreading from madagaskar to hawaii. Indonesia once colonised by the Dutch for almost 300 years too. But we are not convenience to say that we are part or anything remotely related to them. Dont get me wrong, we are still respecting them as a sovereign nation tho. But we are decided to maintain our culture and identity as a pride to bond the people. Btw, langit is also means sky in Indonesia, just like mata means eyes, or sepuluh means ten. And btw, Filipinos people are beautiful. Respect to y'all brothers and sisters from me in Jakarta. I hope one day southeast asia and the bigger austronesian family will develop even further, just like europe. After all, we are all one big family as human race.

In our history class, we were taught that the Spanish colonizers would burn any relics they encountered, possibly to influence our ancestors to convert to Christianity and erase traces of their original way of life. Despite our desire to preserve our culture like our neighbors did, much of it has already been lost. The Spaniards even derogatorily referred to our ancestors as "mang-mang," which isn't true at all given the intricate designs of many artifacts recovered in far flung areas. Heck a writing system was even discovered, but it was already too late since most Filipinos got used to the foreign alphabets.

@@___Anakin.Skywalker lol colonial mentality did you learn Philippines history? or inshort your racist Calling Filipinos as Pacific islanders it's means you have colonial mentality. Philippines is a former U.S colony. Filipinos labelling as Pacific islanders is a product of colonialism in short American colonial legacy. American calling Filipinos as Pacific islanders it's based on colonial legacy and purely political nothing do with genetics, history and cultures. Our ancestors, the Austronesians, originated in Southern China and Taiwan, and they're the reason why Filipinos exist today. Austronesian people is originated in Southern East China migrating to taiwan then enter the Philippines bringing their cultures, languages, influence and traditions in our country they are the reason why we Filipinos exist today. U.S census classifying Austronesian is a languages family instead of genetics ancestry they already ruin the Austronesian race of Filipinos because U.S census labelling Austronesian is a language Family or linguistically related to Austronesian like for Example Austronesian speaking melanesian, Austronesian speaking Polynesian, Austronesian speaking micronesian and I can't deny we sharing some genetics but it's not accurate labelling Austronesian is language family. So why did the American colonial legacy government label Filipinos as Pacific Islanders? Frankly, it's a gross oversimplification and a disservice to our heritage. The truth is, Filipinos have strong connections with our neighbors in East and Southeast Asia, both culturally and geographically. The American colonial legacy government's attempt to categorize Filipinos as Pacific Islanders was misguided and damaging. It not only misrepresented our identity but also reinforced harmful stereotypes and misconceptions. By erasing our Southeast Asian roots and lumping us into a category that doesn't accurately reflect who we are, they undermined our sense of belonging and perpetuated a distorted image of the Philippines. But here's the thing: we won't let their colonial legacy define us. We know who we are-proud Southeast Asians with a rich and diverse heritage. It's time to reclaim our identity and celebrate our Austronesian roots. So to anyone still clinging to outdated labels, hear this loud and clear: Filipinos are not Pacific Islanders, and it's about time you recognize and respect that.

Our family is known for being Voyagers. We basically live and still practice the primitive way of living. We sail the seas to see different Ethnic tribes to help. We prefer to roam the waters and the mountains than the cities. My ethnicity are Aeta, Indonesian and Hispanic. When I was in New Zealand, I was even ask if I am a Maori. As a Filipino, considering yourself whether you are Asian, Hispanic or Pacific Islander depends on how your family let you see who you are. Most of Filipinos telling they are Asian and Hispanic are from the cities. Some Filipinos calling themselves Pacific Islanders are mostly from remote and rural areas.

Filipinos worldwide don't say they are Pacific Islanders. Only Filipino Americans claim to be Pacific Islanders. Fil-Ams have no logic to it either. The Fil-Ams will say, that they have the same ancestry as Pacific Islanders, so Filipinos are Pacific Islanders. Ask the Fil-Ams if Malagasy people (Madagascar located in the Indian Ocean) or Indigenous Taiwanese people are Pacific Islanders and Fil-Ams will say no. Yet, they all have the same Austronesian ancestry also. What is more insane, is Fil-Ams will claim Filipino languages are closely related to the Oceanic languages like Hawaiian or Maori, but won't admit Indonesian and Malay are closer when asked. Fil-Ams claim that their writing system uses the Latin alphabet, which is used by Pacific Islanders, thus they are Pacific Islanders. The Fil-Ams ignore the fact, the writing system is European to begin with and adopted by many non-European countries. Fil-Ams won't acknowledge the Baybayin script used before Europeans arrived. Baybayin just like Kulitan, Javanese, Sundanese and other scripts were derived from the Brahmic script from South ASIA. Being Asian is a great thing. The Fil-Ams attempt to hijack Pacific Islanders culture is disgusting.

I am Filipino American, and I can explain some things about this identify crisis. When Filipinos immigrate to the US, they often end up in very diverse areas with whites, Hispanics, Asians, etc. 1) of those groups, Hispanics are most like Filipinos culturally. I went to a catholic school, and Hispanics were at school, at the church, there were no Koreans or Chinese there. Our names we’re the same as the Mexicans. We even liked boxing. The Chinese and Koreans often keepnto themselves and are quiet. Hispanic people and filipinos share way more in common in almost every aspect compared to Chinese or Koreans. Even by looks. Most Chinese and Koreans were light skinned and many Filipinos often look like indigenous Mexican Indians, and vice versa: many Mexicans could pass for Filipino if they wanted. 2) when filling out forms your race is often asked. Usually there is white, black, Hispanic, Native American, Asian and pacific islander. It’s actually kid of confusing as Filipinos because yes we are indeed on an island in the pacific! Chinese, Koreans, and Vietnamese obviously don’t come from islands but we do. You often fill out forms from a young age, and it never gets properly explained to you, so in my younger years I often checked Pacific Islander sometimes. Because in my mind, an asian was Chinese or Korean . If anything I looked more like a Hawaiian than a Korean and they were Pacific Islanders and I came from a pacific island, so wouldn’t I be a Pacific Islander?

Filipinos with Spanish ancestry are a very small portion of the population. Just because a majority of Filipinos have Spanish-sounding names doesn't mean that they were sired by Spaniards who married natives. Truth is, following their baptisms into the Roman Catholic Church, the natives were given Spanish last names from a book of last names, El Catálogo Alfabético de Apellidos by royal decree.

They were never conquered by the Spaniards. How would you classify them since they are not predominantly influenced by the empire of Spain nor the Viceroyalty of Mexico? Why do you think there is a movement in changing the name of the Philippines as a country? Because the current name does not represent the collective people as a whole. It only represent the culture of the majority of people who control the government. Philippines is a western concept: Derived from the name of the king of Spain during conquest with the spelling changed by the Americans during their regime to indicate what they desire-the hardwood trees for the expansion of the American naval power (trees = pines). Just so you know.

Born,raised, and educated (kindergarten through university) in the Philippines to parents who have Spanish-French-Filipino (mother) and Chinese-Filipino (father) ancestry. I now live in the US. On any and all forms where I am asked my ethnicity, I always tick Asian unless Filipino is also one of the choices. Filipinos born, raised, and educated in the Philippines are taught in school that the Philippines is in Southeast Asian and we are Asians. The first time I encountered the terms “Hispanic” and “Asia Pacific Islander” as applied to/possibly associated with the Philippines was when I moved to the US 20 years ago. I believe that 2nd generation Filipino-Americans (those born and raised in the US to 2 Filipino parents where either both or 1 parent was born and raised in the Philippines) can or may have the misinformed or mistaken impression that ALL Filipinos as Asian Pacific Islanders. That may be a result of their parents not being clear about the Philippines’ geography and history, or information learned from their environment. Case in point: I was watching tv the other day regarding the creative use of flowers. One of the segments was how to make a simple lei and they had a guest from Hawaii to provide instructions/guidance. As they were talking the host mentioned that she had Filipino ancestry and she confirmed by saying both her parents were originally from the Philippines. Can’t remember how she got to it but she mentioned that 48% of Filipinos consider themselves Asía Pacific Islanders. First words out of my mouth were “oh HELL no!” Don’t know where she got her (mis)information from but it probably only surveyed 2nd generation and onwards Fil-Ams.

But based from the history of the Philippines and the people I know of, Filipinos are of mixed blood not only with other Asian countries but also with other countries from other continents. It's not actually like we are boasting having mixed blood. We're just saying the truth. I, myself, have Japanese AND Spanish blood within me but I'm still proud to call myself a Filipino. You people just need to have an open mind and not react so fast with out knowing anything about what you're saying.

To summarize: Philippines is a Southeast Asian Nation located in the Western Pacific. Filipinos are ASIAN with a shared ancestry of the Pacific Islander (due to being Austronesian) and a "former" Hispanic country (due to the heavy influence in culture, religion, laws, and its "former" official Spanish language). BUT FILIPINOS ARE SOUTHEAST ASIAN. Not a Hispanic country nor a Pacific Islander or even an ethnic Malay. PERIOD.

People keep forgetting that there are only tendencies for a certain group of people (under a nationality) to identify as anything else but their Nationality, especially Filipinos! Us Filipinos tend to share the term "Filipino" because We are just that, Filipino. It doesn't depend at all on your ethnicity or ethnic group because the Filipino identity is quite versatile, going from Southern Chinese traders assimilating in, to Spanish people marrying the locals, to Americans marrying with the locals, etc... All that matters is they assimilate and will identify as Filipino, and that's how We are now. We are very much a mix of people from different ethnic groups, to many foreigners it may seem that We are mostly of malayo-polynesian stock or even Austronesian most of the time (Austronesian does not immediately mean coming from Australia or being an Australian Aborigine, which many people mistake it for.). Meaning, darker-skinned, shorter stature, etc... But then again, that's just one portion of the current ethnic groups that lie in The Philippines, sure you could observe that they (The Austronesians and Malayo-Polynesians or Melanesians) were the first to land, but they can't dismiss the fact that many other ethnicities assimilate very well into Filipino culture, specifically East Asians(Mostly-Chinese) ethnic groups are notable. We can't be labeled as "Hispanic" or even "Western" or "Pacific Islander.", The nation is situated in Southeast Asia, and arguably We are a weak example of a "Pacific Islander" nation, We are not in Oceania, We are in southeast asia, exactly. End of story indeed.
@yattasuccess92125 жыл бұрын
@Arroz Solo Many "Filipinos" can classify with any ethnicity, but! If they for example, born in The Philippines, born to Filipino parents who are most-likely not recent immigrants from europe, etc.. Just because they feel white doesn't mean they're white, yeah those people are quite delusional. Some Filipinos who are literally "White" (referring to the ethnic background) in blood can be white, but those who aren't that, would be delusional to try and call themselves white, just because the Philippines was heavily colonized by Spain or something, which isn't a valid argument to call yourself "White" just by that alone. I'd rather just leave that person alone and wait for them to get some sense. It's a stronger argument for that Filipino person to call themselves East Asian or even from Oceania in direct ethnic background rather than straight-up claiming they're White just because of a long history that doesn't directly correlate with that person being "White" or "Spanish".

With Moana 2 coming out in theaters, I just wanted to take a moment to address something. As a Polynesian, I truly value the rare moments when Polynesian culture gets the spotlight-like in Moana-because we are such a small group, and it means a lot to us to see our heritage represented. While it’s true that some of our distant ancestors are the same, our cultures have far more differences than similarities when compared to Austronesian Asians like Filipinos and Indonesians. Samoans, Tongans, Hawaiians, and other Polynesians have unique languages, customs, and traditions that make us distinct, and it’s important for us to have our space to be celebrated for those differences, especially in the rare instances we get media representation. To put it into perspective, when Raya and the Last Dragon came out, I didn’t hear any Polynesians speaking up, even though it was focused on Southeast Asian cultures. Similarly, when the Filipino character on Sesame Street was introduced, no Polynesians stepped in to claim that spotlight. We respected their moment to shine, just as we hope others can respect ours when it comes to movies like Moana 2. Honestly, it’s kind of ridiculous that I even have to ask for this, and to be honest, you should be embarrassed that it even needs to be said. It’s about allowing each culture to have its own moment to be seen and celebrated. Just as we respect your unique identity and culture, we ask for the same respect when it comes to celebrating Polynesian culture. I hope you understand where I’m coming from, and I really appreciate your understanding and respect for that.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Islands#Asia Japan is, indeed, a "Pacific Island," as are those others. "In English, the umbrella term Pacific Islands may take on several meanings. Sometimes it refers to only those islands covered by the continent of Oceania.[1][2] In some common uses, the term "Pacific Islands" refers to the islands of the Pacific Ocean once colonised by the Portuguese, Spaniards, Dutch, British, French, United States, and Japanese, such as the Pitcairn Islands, Taiwan, and Borneo.[3] In other uses it may refer to islands with Austronesian linguistic heritage like Taiwan, Indonesia, Micronesia, Polynesia, Myanmar islands, which found their genesis in the Neolithic cultures of the island of Taiwan."

First, some filipinos really love to be something else aside from being asian or south east asia. They cannot fathom that when they take an ancestry test (they are mostly asian descent). Also remember that filipinos back then in the Spanish colonial era, pretend to be meztiza de sangley (mixed of filipino, chinese and spanish) even though they are just a mixed of chinese ancestry. That's why filipino associate having pale skin as being "tisay" (meztiza) though they don't have spanish ancestry. the possibility of it is we have much more chinese ancestry than spanish because of the close proximity to china. Yes, the manila galleon trade happened but as what i always say, it didn't happen like everyday. Pacific Ocean is big and because of that it receive less immigrants and influence. For me, it is actually kind of insulting to other hispanics and pacific islanders when we are claiming their identity.

@@alexisarrizon6083 Hhahahah, your statement is bold and factual. More Spaniards went to the New World due to trade and proximity of location. The populations of Spanish who settled in the Philippines was smaller, esp. given the distance. The mestizos in the Philippines today are not directly descended from Spanish as the Spanish back in the day married among their own kind and were tribal and conscious in who they married. In the US and Latin America, our ratio of Spanish ancestry is extremely higher and very well known and documented. Also, unlike the Americas, in 1849 the Philippine Gov't used a book, el Catalogo Alfabeitco de Appellidos, which has upended the myth the most Filipinos have Spanish ancestry but rather their surnames were selected or designated from this book and to families for tax purposes. I've met so many Filipino's who say they are Spanish and claim ancestry but every time I get to asking about their genealogies the stories seem to veer off like, "I gotta go, or I have a call". Very little proof except for a last name. Also, unlike other Asian nations, the Philippines is literally the only country that in order to get a job, whiteness is a value and or to be visibly culturally mixed is a benefit. Throughout the rest of Asia, it's something that is an embarrassment.

I think only North Americans get confused since the word "Asian" to them only means "East Asian". They completely forget that Southeast, South, and Western Asia exist. I live in the UK and I get called Asian. My Filipino friends are called Asian. My Indian friends are called Asian. My Sri Lankan friends are called Asian. I have been to several countries in Europe traveling with my Filipino boyfriend and there's really no confusion or doubt that Filipinos are Asian.

Asian = Yes ✔️ Hispanic = Yes ✔️ Pacific Islander = Yes ✔️ Asian because geographically located in Southeast Asia. Maritime Southeast Asia to be exact. Hispanic because hispanic itself is Spanish Culture. Believe me or not. There’s atleast one fiesta everyday in the Philippines for the whole year. Imagine that 1/365. Churches , architecture, food, borrowed language etc. Very hispanic yet so asian. Pacific Islander because it’s an archipelagic nation in the pacific ocean. According to chicken theory of Pacific Migration. The migration started in the Philippines. So the pacific islanders perhaps came from the Philippines. Hmmm But if we’re gonna ask where the Philippines truly belong? Definitely, ASIA. Not just geographically but also culturally diverse with much influence of Asia with western touch. This is only a problem of a Filipino living abroad. They are having identity crisis. But the Filipinos in the Philippines, I’m sure they considered themselves as Asians. 👍
