I'm no military but my late granpa was geologist in Siberia. He spent half of his life in the most terrible conditions and was truly "in the field" researching deep down Siberian taiga. He used his beloved digital Elektronika 5, he had one of the first models produced in 1977. No other functions but timekeeping, no backlight, nothing. But he was fascinated how low-maintenance is this watch and how accurate is quartz in general. So he preferred even though he had a nice 5 watches collection of the best mechanical Soviet peices from 1950s, 60s and 70s (I don't think he bought any new watches after he got his Elektronika 5). In the 2000s when he was already an old man, I made some money during summer and bough him a G-Shock. I honestly don't remember the exact model but I believe it was a DW8300. It was advertised in the magazine and I saw it on the shelf of the local watch store. It was quite expensive for me, but I saved nevertheless. He was truly amazed by it. Especially the backlight. I could tell that it truly blew his mind. He was still driving to his dacha (the cabin) in the village and worked a lot with his hands. He really highly regarded this watch and he also admired and respected the Japanese quality and genius, despite the fact that both of his older brothers died fighting Japanese Forces in Mongolia (battle of Khalkhin Gol). He wore it till his death 9 years later. Unfortunately I could never find it as a lot of things got displaced or lost after his death. Sorry for the long story, just wanted to say that in his opinion it was a true field watch and he could never see himself going back to Dirty Dozen type of mechanicals.

As an ex-military personnel who used to specialised in jungle warfare, I had a Gshock watch which I bought in the 1990s that served me well in the jungle. Frankly, I can't imagine any other watches which could have survived the hard knocks and water immersion that it received in the jungle. It also coped well with extreme changes in temperature, from hot humid daytime temperature to cold night time temp, especially after a monsoon shower. Many a times the dial face would fogged up from such temp changes but after some time warming up in the sun, it would clear up again. I still have that Gshock and apart from a deep scratch on the resin, it is in good working order after 25 years.

I wore a Casio DW-200 during my time in the Air Force (and it still works +35 years later). Most Special Ops commandos, and regular grunts, take a G-Shock into battle, and not some WWII or Vietnam-style, analog watch. A digital Casio is tougher, easier to read, can be set to 24-hour military time, and has a built-in chronograph, and alarms.

The answer is yes, without a doubt. Everyone can have their own opinion for their personal collections, but when you look at the statistics of the amount of uses that Casios (G Shocks) get in real world use, it’s not even a question. I think that 50 years from now people will look at the F-91 and 5600 the way we look back at the dirty dozen and hack watches today.

I’m in the US Army, and a watch guy. Here is what I wear: A suunto core for every day, solar g shock in the field, a Seiko diver on an OD green NATO when I’m feeling nostalgic, and a Garmin Fenix when I am doing PT (physical training). The garmin having to be charged as well as having to take it off in certain areas because of Bluetooth kills it for daily wear. I’ve had a Hamilton khaki field mechanical before but the 50m of WR stresses me out.

my G-Shocks display got wrecked and showed.. only 88888 and it was pulsating instead of showing the time. because i was too long outside at a temperature of 48,7°C ( thats about 120°F) i was outside all day long.. ( this temperature is common in summer in my home country) so i‘d say a real field watch should be able to stand up high temperatures..

I would say yes. I wore one in the Army for about 8 years, and it had a hard life and never let me down. But... I understand the analog style, with hacking ability and leather or NATO straps. It was a requirement in my unit that you "had" to wear a watch, but we never synced our watches, so either version met the requirements. We all know G-Shocks are durable, and water resistant, but the feature that seals the deal is the backlight. No matter how your eyes adjust to the darkness, lumed watch fall short, it's just the simple fact. G-Shocks do not age well, they don't gain patina and the older they get, they move farther away from that "romantic" appeal. So i have worn a G-Shock in both fields, civilian and military, and it continues to be my choice.

Field watches of, let's say, the WW2 era only look the way they look because those were the toughest, most reliable solutions (that were also easily mass produced) they could design back then: - They didn't want extra complications to minimize points of failure, hence e.g. no date displays. - On digital watches, turns out these extra complications don't seem to increase failure rate. - It needed to be hacking to synchronize seconds - Casio modules don't hack but let you easily reset (forward or back) the seconds, so that should achieve the same. - Needed to be stainless because both brass and early plastic/rubber materials weren't strong enough. - Modern polymers are crazy strong though, e.g. laminated fiberglass. - Mattest matte finish for the cases please to avoid glare. - Now, no issue with polymer cases. - Quartz watches hadn't been invented yet in WW2, but later on, decades later, when they were available, they were chosen for field watches for their higher accuracy, lower cost etc. such as the British G10, that Seiko/Pulsar used to make. - Dials needed to be very well readable. - Now, digital watches surely can score in that area, too. - Needed to be readable in the dark so it had to be Radium paint, or fluorescent paint, or later tritium. - Today, LED illumination at the push of a button, surely that easily counts as analogue.

Casio make the most robust, reliable watches on the planet, bar none, and G-Shock are the best Casio. Folks can argue about the definition of “field watch” all they want, the flavor of G-Shock an individual prefers will fulfill the task perfectly. As a watch collector, I appreciate that most G-Shock are affordably priced so that multiple G models can be purchased to use for whatever the adventure is, be it hunting, hiking, swimming, crawling thru mud, sailing, rock climbing, artillery, flying, biking, whatever, there are G-Shock for it.

a matter of perspective, user vs collector. In case of field watches; *romantic watch collector in air conditioned room with high speed internet* : - something that pay respect to previous generation of mechanical field watches that worn by or issued to combatants in 20th century wars, preferably made by reputable watchmaking house to the highest craftmanship standard. *user whose life constantly under threat each day* : -something that can tell time accurately and reliably no matter what the situation, doesn't break apart in roughest condition, and can be obtained or replaced easily if broken or lost.

I’ve never owned a G Shock and I only have one Orient Field-style watch (a cheapie just to get a taste) and I’m not really drawn to either, this rendering my opinion relatively invalid, but in the sense of a field watch being used first and foremost as a tool, I’d have to agree that G Shock is the ultimate field watch of today. Do computers look the same way they did 50 years ago? Do other military weapons and tools look the same way they did 100 years ago? No. Then why must a field watch look the same as it did decades ago? Technology and tools evolve, and the G Shock seems to me to be the next evolution of field watch. But again, I’m not terribly qualified to comment on this subject. Cheers, Jory!

I think there's something endearing about analogue watches that digital watches cannot match. The way analogue hands tell the time is very different from a digital screen throwing numbers at you. For example if I read, say 4:37:49 on a digital watch, I have to take an extra step to do some mental calculations to get a feel of the time. Whereas if I see the same time on a 3 hand analogue dial, I instantly know that's about 22 minutes to go until 5 o clock. It's almost like speaking a language that you have to mentally translate as opposed to speaking your native language. There's something more visceral, more charming about a clear, easy to read, 3 hand analogue field watch that tells you the time at a glance while you're busy with your work 'in the field'.
@KentuckyMan30

I've always felt this way, but never seen anyone else with similar sentiments. Everytime I look at a digital clock (phone, computer, etc) I ALWAYS read the time, then in my minds eye convert that to an analogue clock face. Similarly, when looking at an analogue clock or watch, when I see the time, I actually see what time it is in relation to the time that's come before it and what is coming after. I get more context about the current time as it relates to the day. With digital, as you say, it's just numbers being thrown at me.

G Shocks can totally be an ultimate field watch, so was the old 1st gen Timex Expedition Indiglo I bought right before leaving for basic that I wore in lieu of the later issued Navigator through my whole service. About a year ago I stumbled across some late model JDM Casio Overland models, for the non digital crowd they would tick most of the classic field watch points. Analog display, 12/24hr numerical indices, great lume, and rugged all steel or titanium construction... Plus tough solar, perpetual calendar, powerful led light, and Waveceptor atomic radio sync. Look for models OVW-100, OVW-110, and OAW-100.

I wouldn't argue with either side of this poll. I can see it both ways. When I know I'm going into the field, I leave my Swiss spinning gears, and I take my JDM triple sensor Mudmaster. That's my reality

If I wanted to utility then I would wear a G-shock. When I actually go out into the field for NG stuff I wear a Suunto GPS watch. When I'm just in uniform in the office I wear field watches.

i like the aesthetic of the classic field watch (3-hand, very legible dial, etc). however, i like to have more features on the filed other than simply time (ie stopwatch for cooking, measuring hike time, countdown timer, some kind of light, etc). so i think in 2021 the term 'field watch' is still present but in a modernized form (ie proved gshock models). even for everyday use, i just can't have a watch that does the same thing Jory does (telling time), i like to have at least a chronograph.

Jory, I love my G-shocks. Used mine extensively. However, to me they seem to be going in a direction that validates everything watch collectors say about Invicta. Goddy, primary use as a fashion accessories, hard to use as time pieces (negative displays, overly complicated dials, etc.) Please tell me I am wrong.

Yes, two types of field watch the classical and practical. Practical is a G-Shock. I take that simple square with me whenever I am cycling/hiking or working outside as for my classical Vario 1918 trench watch, na that's for the show when I go to memorial service or just out and about. I tend to wear G-Shock's more simply because they are just more versatile. The timer function is convenient for me. Just wear what you want and don't give a damn about what other people think, as their opinion means nothing at all.

@MJFallout

But what does that even mean? I'm sure Rolex builds their stuff to a near impeccable quality standard, yet Casio does not, which is why common models go for well under $100. Rolex won't give me the watch I want, even if I were to walk into the dealer today, a phat wad of cash in hand. Meanwhile, I could today choose from ~hundreds (of even just) G-shock models, in brick'n'mortar locations alone, in most bigger city of the world. Rolex seems to be spending the greater part of it's revenue just on marketing, sponsoring and all that, Casio does not spend an unreasonable amount in that way, as far as I know. Casio also makes watches that are suitable and suitably priced for virtually everyone, from sub $10 to north of $2,000.

@@MJFallout Hi, yes I had a Rolex Submariner for about 30 years. It didn’t stand up to wear and tear very well; at one stage it was a near wreck and leaked. I had it re-built back to spec. That was good. But it never kept very good time. And the bracelet was rather tinny. I later bought two Omega Aqua Terras and the quality was far better. I had a G shock for about twenty years and it is now still as new. It is solar and needs no attention at all. G shocks may be cheap but the quality is excellent. I made the comment because way before they became a watch icon, Rolex was a tough beater watch with the oyster case. The reliable companion that always worked. Now that is the G Shock.

If we stay in the Casio catalog I think: Pro-Trek Models are even more suitable as a Fieldwatch than the classic DW5600 for example. The DW5600 offers time only functions which when I am personally out and about, don´t need. Would rather take any Casio Pro-Trek Model with me. Or my old and trusty Suunto Traverse (its battery might die after a day in the field, but it offers everything I might need during hiking/camping etc - Time, Barometer, Altimeter, Thermometer, Compass, Alarm).

Some G-shocks qualify but not many. For me a field watch is one that offers great , unmistakable visibility. One should be able to get the time with a flick of a wrist while running/working. Most G-shocks are tool-fashion watches.

I jumped in the automatic and analog watches and spend quite a ton of money to scratch that itch but fen hate them now since they do not do even 1/4 of what a casio or a gshock can. I want a timer, a light(fuck lume stupidity) and accuracy and when I pick the watch up I want it to work, not fen waste 1-5 min in case of a gmt to set it up to correct time since the wind reserve is only 40-80 hrs. Casio/Gshocks are the ultimate everything watch!

Not sure how this is something up for debate. What we call "Field Watches" nowadays are simply watches that carry on the _aesthetic_ of the types of watches that were originally designed to be easily readable in warfare scenarious during WWI and other early 20th Century wars. The G-Shocks fulfill that mission brief better than almost any other range of watches in the moder era (1980's onwards).

Assuming field watches being “military ready” watches, it really depends. Solar powered G-Shocks are near perfect. Except, if your wrist is usually hidden and your bunker or dormitory usually don’t see a lot of sun light then, sun powered G-Shocks lose purpose. Battery powered ones are great, except a spare battery and small screw driver would always need to be packed whenever going out in the field. The fact that most wars are not like WW2 nowadays, battery powered ones sound okay. However, soldiers do become MIA even today. Your watch dying on you while lost/MIA would suck. So, I’d say solar powered G-SHOCKs are best, but if the missions take place in dark places a lot, mechanical ones still make sense I suppose.

Yes the G-Shock is the ultimate field watch today. But when I think of a 'field watch' a Khaki Field, Explorer or Alpinist comes to my mind but if I'm going hiking or camping today I would bring my G-Shock and not my field watch. If I slipped on a rock and hurt my arm the G-Shock will be be fine, the field watch may not. If I lived 60 years ago and went hiking or camping I would bring a field watch instead of a dress watch. During WW2 and Vietnam field watches were probably the toughest, most reliable watches available as they were more shock and water resistant than a dress watch at the time which would could leak water in a heavy downpour. A Solar powered G-Shock is the toughest most reliable today.
