I mean if that's the case they should include a support bracket for free with the gpu and they should make sure to put instructions with the gpu on how to set it up properly or else its the companies fault at that point, my biggest issue with 40 cards is the 12vpwr cables burning the pcb, even if its fully plugged in which some cases were found recently, if you hear the click imo that should be secure and its because nvidia and other board partners cheaped out to save money and cost consumers trouble instead.

Almost all the 4080 and 4090 and even some 4070 ti come with a support bracket. The only ones I’ve seen burn up are 4090/ because they are pulling more amps than the pins can handle.
@lovie74
@lovie74 10 ай бұрын
@@cppctek yeah that's the problem with the 4090s but some 4080s also had problems where the pcb burned. AMD was gonna use the same connector for their 7900xtx but went back to the old cable and they have no problems with their gpus. Nvidia made a mistake and cant own up to it which sucks since if a car company did this they would recall all the cars but nvidia wont do that with their cards to fix the problem. For the support bracket I feel like it's good but not every case has room for support brackets unless the support brackets are built into the case. Like the lian li 011 dynamic I'm quite sure it has fans under where the gpu is so that would cause problems putting a support bracket there. I feel like most case companies will now have to come with a free support bracket for the newer generational gpus, like with the phanteks nv7, nv5, and nv9

The cracking is mainly due to GPUs being sent out in pre builds. The sagging will not crack the pcb. It will in time cause memory issues due to ripped pads so yes always use support bracket most RTX 4090s come supplied with a bracket.
@inceptionsd
@inceptionsd 8 ай бұрын
My thoughts exactly. GPU sag could be a culprit, however a rather gentle, constant downward pressure caused by it's own weight is not nearly as extreme as a multi-axis shaking and rapid vibration/movement stress that is put on a GPU in a pre-built system during transportation. People should either ask for GPUs to be shipped separately or at the very least demand that some bubble-wrap rolls are put inside the case to prevent GPU movement.

I am Jérémie, the guy who shared all the info to Rossmann last week which others based their content off. You're slightly wrong to say they all put traces there, in the repair community we have seen lots of cards, even from that series which have cracks but work just fine because they have no traces going through there (mainly MSI as far as I know). We have basically never had cracked MSI cards ending up on our bench. They have very little copper in the area and this somewhat confirms my hypothesis on repair(dot)wiki of Gigabyte cards having a weakness due to how much copper traces and planes they put there so close to the edge. Zotac 30 series have a second screw hole very close to the locking tab and a similar trace layout but we also haven't been getting them on our benches (at least for this reason, maybe Zotac simply takes responsibility for it when customers send them in though). And no on 10 series and 20 series and RX 400/500s we did sometimes see freak cases of ripped PCIe tabs on the left side from shipping damage. Of course supporting the card from down below can help it but while being transported it should be supported from up and down movement and also side to side and not only at the back, I've seen plenty of instances of PCIe slots ripped clean off when a PC is dropped. Or better yet, not shipped with the GPU slotted in. A support at the back will only help for long term bowing, not if you bump your PC and even then it will only halve or less the downward force going through the PCIe locking tab on Gigabyte cards. The air coolers on Gigabyte 30 series while sturdy do flex a bit at the heat pipes between the core plate and fins so with impacts it can still shear at the locking tab if you have a leg on the right front side of the card if not worse because by locking one side the PCB experiences tension not compression at the PCIe locking tab. PCBs are more resilient to compression than tension. Consumer products should always be built to be usable by the average consumer.

I’ve had a ton of gigabyte gpus over the last several generations. Never had one crack. I know everyone’s experience is different but if the car is stable and supported it will not spontaneously crack. It’s just like a car if you scratch it or dent it you can’t blame the car. You should be extremely careful with Gpus because they are fragile. I guess you should check out Reddit. Search for cracked gpu and you will see thousands of post of the years Reddit has been around and find every brand card you can imagine !

I agree with ur vid. Solution is simple. Problem is that the average consumer will never know this or if they find out, it's usually because it is 2 late.. . The companies making these heavy cards MUST put a large warning sign to make sure even the average buyers know and the people making the prebuilds better know if not they are also responsible for this screw up.
@cppctek
@cppctek 11 ай бұрын
Exactly. I know most people building for the first time can’t really harness all the info from all across every video so manufacturers should really push out maybe digital manuals or put up some KZbin instructions the owner can watch to see how it’s installed. It’s quite wild how many people buy a new gpu, watch a jayz2cents video and still do it wrong or go to a discord and ask for help because they have a diff gpu or diff case and they can’t figure it out. There’s so many variables with hardware choices and build guides can’t cover everything and become out dated so fast. I try hard to help the newbies so they don’t make wrong choices.

@cppctek I've done gpu and motherboard repairs for 30 years and I can tell you people have NO common sense and when anything goes wrong they play the blame game. I closed my shop and retired when the pandemic hit. Thank God. Size weight and expense of newer gpu's should dictate a person use a abundance of caution, but I say again people are stupid. Amazon sells all different types of support brackets to fit every possible scenario for less than $20 if the supplied support bracket does not fit your build, PERIOD. Pull the card if you have to transport your build. Again, common sense. Take care 🙂

Hey Phyro. I got my hands on a gigabyte 3080 12gb gaming oc that was manufactured on 2022, do you think they made the pcb sturdier? Because I tried (gently) to move the tab and it wasn't moving AT ALL, it was REALLY REALLY sturdy. Now I look at the tab and it says, right on it, '2022', as if it was a new revision on the pcb or something that made it sturdier.

Really good video. I was coming to this conclusion since 30 series didnt come with support brackets. Interesting to see a founders 4090 repair video showing this exact issue. Also interesing that gigabyte actually gave a support bracket for 40 series cards, they must be well aware now that the weight of these cards need support. Gpu anti sag brackets are just mandatory at this point. Very level headed take on all this...we dont have the exact data and given its a popular brand you will get more cases. Also they are probably heavier than other cards so need that support even more. Gigabyte are getting slammed because of the lack of support to customers who have had this happen and rightfully so. So as a consumer protect your GPU with a bracket but shady after service support is not on either and they need to be better.

One thing to note is that a big portion of these cracking GPUs are in pre-builts or PCs that have been moved. Shipping a PC with the GPU installed in a bad idea anyways...

So either we need a new PCIe spec revision to fix this or lighter weight wise coolers. We do have lighter coolers just all of them happen to be water cooling for the RTX cards that seem to have this cracking problem. Really that is the reason i see the GPU market for consumers going to liquid cooling. Move the weight away from the card to a radiator some where else normally in the case. I do not see us going away from the current PCIe physical spec as it goes back so far and the transition period that some will and some will not have the connector they are trying to go to will take years if not a decade. We still had motherboards with PCI until 2010 and PCI express is in more motherboards and has more cards for it that PCI did so it will take even longer to replace.
@cppctek
@cppctek 11 ай бұрын
I will say we do need a better connector for sure. It’s not very user friendly especially for new builders. It’s very tricky to remove and hit the release. I’ve seen so many break the card just trying to remove it and won’t ever admit fault or recognize sometimes they did. The waterblocks although can be very very heavy though. The ekwb for my 3090 was super super chonky and heavy. If they experiment maybe with lighter materials it could help or do better with weight distribution like you mentioned. There’re are so many fixes including stronger bracing and back plates too that could help as well.

I had been using Gigabyte graphics card for very long time since I first got it with GTX 560 Ti, then GTX 660, GTX 1070 FE and now RTX 2080 Super Turbo. I had used it for DCS World and played it at maximum quality graphics setting at 1080P HD with no problem. The extreme durability of the electronics component is so good and proven. Just lucky I did not upgrade my graphics card to RTX 30 or 40 series yet. Those RTX 3080, 3080 Ti, 3090, 3090 Ti, 4070 Ti, 4080 and 4090 GPU card was so expensive, the best suggestion for those who afforded it should get water-cooled version rather than air cooled version. You can pay for a such expensive 4090 card why not just add plenty bucks for water cooled version? I think the water-cooled version should be safe from any PCB cracking? If I am Gigabyte, I will recall all the air-cooled affected GPU and RMA replace with water cooled version with additional cost from the owner just to upgrade it from air cool to water cool and solve the issue. Those recalled GPU still have valuable for recycle to retrieve the GPU processor, GPU VRAM and several electronic components to remake new water-cooled GPU. This will satisfy the customer and the trust from the community to maintain future sales and the trust of the community for the brand. However, Gigabyte respond with refusing the RMA is destroying themself just to prevent current loss but will suffering future loss of sales. I think that must be something wrong with the Gigabyte, it's getting into civil war just like the old ancient Chinese history the romance of three kingdom. It was fighting between Three kingdoms for ASUS, msi and Gigabyte, just like the old days of Cao Cao, Liu Bei and Sun Quan. Those Chinese never changed for thousand years ago, they remain fighting each other's as those ASUS, msi and Gigabyte was all Taiwan 's Chinese company. The condition for Gigabyte just likes the old days of 1927-1949 Chinese civil war between Chinese Communist Party 's Mao Ze Dong and Kuo Min Tang 's Chiang Kai Shek. You should know how and why Chiang 's defeat in the civil war, that's lots of Chiang 's Generals and personals defected and joined Chinese Communist party. They all disclose critical secret, misleading in military strategy and caused a total defeat of Chiang Kai Shek in China. That Gigabyte just like the old day 's Chiang Kai Shek, stubborn and failed to dig-up any traitor. With modern engineering computer aided design, how can Gigabyte did not know the weakness and flaws on the PCB design? did they did not simulate it on CAE simulation? There must be a mole or traitor hide within Gigabyte?

Do the Gigabyte cards come with a support bracket or stand? Do they make it obvious that it is /required/? If not, then any cases where this isn't shipping damage should be covered by them, but I have no idea how you'd prove it either way. If you're using the card normally as instructed, and it just cracks after a few months of sitting in your case, still within the warranty period, you can't blame the user. It's Gigabyte selling the card and they should do the due diligence of making sure it doesn't break within the warranty period at the bare minimum.

hey man I haven't watched your video, but I wanna share something strange that happened(not the gpu) So I found your video on my phone when I searching for "gigabyte pcb" cracking yesterday and this video was literally one of the first to pop up but I decided to watch it later on my desktop. Anyway when I entered the same query your video was nowhere to be found AND even if I filter/sort by date it still didn't appear. Just thought to let you know. Who knows maybe the video is being suppressed or something

@@cppctek NICE! I was suspecting sag to be the cause but i wanted to make sure. Regardless I did install the bracket(side question does it matter what kind/type of bracket I use) included with my gigabyte 4080 prior to this video(reason i hadn't was because i didn't want to detach and reattach my hdd cage). A question though I have my 4080 since the beginning of the year, I did check the pcb for any damage and none so far at least as far as I can see. But still my paranoia wants to be sure if there could SOME damage done for the time I hadn't installed my bracket?

Finally, somebody explained whats going on. Thanks for that. I use a much ligter card, but thats also sagging, and it was suspicious for me back in 1-2 years, i actually read after it, and i learned its not a problem - well it wasn't, until now, because these cards are even heavier, heavy enough to make physical damage on the card

Pretty much if you just make sure as much tension is off the socket in any direction as possible it will not crack. 99% of the ones I’ve seen crack all were either sagging at one point or were shipped inside a build at one point. Sometimes a tiny crack can happen during shipping inside a prebuilt and then it spreads over time with the sag so it’s def the reason you should always use a sag bracket that takes stress off the socket and the pcb inside the socket

I answered my own question. Put a little level on there and it's fine front to back, but motherboard to glass it's not level. So I ordered a little one from Amazon that had decent reviews. What makes me mad is even with Gigabyte's own bracket it is still not level! I think I would have had issues. This will be my last Gigabyte card, when I had an Asus card it came with the bracket like the one in this video, but I didn't use it then. Luckily nothing bad happened to me, but knowing this now I don't think I'll skip it.

the real issue wasnt the cracking itself, but A. how Gigabyte dealt with it (aka physical damage automatically user fault = no warranty) , when THEY did NOT add a support or even mentioned, that there is the need for one. They just started it now, when the shitstorm started. B. That there are tracks in that little nobby sidepiece = the tiniest crack kills the card and somebody has to solder in jumpers (design flaw) and C. That Gigabyte had issues with older GPU models (20 series), where the cooler construction was so flimsy, that it broke off just by moving the card (eg for a PC cleaning) and they had MAJOR issues with Mobos frying the cpu, where they also dodged any responsibility. So as much as i can see how you had fun with this "calm down you snowflakes - i know why and how" video, it kinda misses the point entirely.

I guess I’ll make a follow up video because asus and every other brand has done the same thing. That’s like scratching your car or denting it and say it’s the cars fault for having such weak body panels. I’ve personally dealt with asus trying to rma a card with a scratch on the outside of the pcb that was there from day one and worked fine for a year until I started getting issues with the vram and they denied rma saying the pcb scratch voided the warranty.

@@cppctek I didnt say that Asus (or MSI or whoever) was any better. In fact nobody said that. You know why? Because Asus has nothing to do with this and talking about Asus in this context just whataboutism. I mean having a - at least i would consider it as such - major design flaw in a quite pricy (some might even go as far as to say : obscenely over-prized) product and then be super dodgy with the warranty is just scamy - period. (and it doesnt matter which company) So maybe instead of doing the cool "just be calm and use ur little bracket and everything will be fiiiine" none-sense, maybe talk about WHY most of the regular GPU "modders" have to cut cost at - as it seems - quite relevant corners, which would lead to why EVGA left that circus (a company with which i - and i'd reckon the general consensus goes d'accord there - never had a single issue. Mostly "over "designed and A-class warranty/customer service) The other option is ofc to act all defensive and passivfe agressive and repeat your car analogy like a scratched record (it doesnt work btw).

Wrong. They use reference pcb and the pcb itself isn’t the issue here. The thickness is the same. The material is also the same. The traces are all down in that corner on 99% of gpus also. You know how many times jayz2cents has been wrong and had to make statements and follow up videos and even removed his own videos ? A ton. I’ve been following him and all the major tech creators for 8-10 years now or more. I understand you think you know what you’ve been told but I can tell you having tons of gigabyte cards in my life and all my friends who build have used them and none of them have cracked. It’s not an issue 99% of people will experience

I got an ROG 4070Ti and a 4000D case. Normally, the hard drive cage on my old 450D case held up the gpu. I didn't want to use the little gpu stand that came with the card so I got a ROG Herculx gpu holder. That holder comes with a bubble level. Well, turns out the Herculx, 4000D, and fat gpus don't work together. It's too big. I wedged it under the video card but the bubble on the level was all to the right, so it was bending it. Just for fun, I put the bubble level on the gpu without any support stand. It was perfectly level without anything. No sag. I didn't figure out why until I remembered my motherboard (ROG B550-E) has steel reinforced PCI-E slots. Still ended up getting the Corsair gpu support that works with Corsair's RGB triangle lights. That works with the 4000D.
