I had a Goodman installed in my rental property some 12 years ago and it has been working like a charm thus far. I just replaced my home unit with new Goodman last month. Plus, it was the most reasonably priced AC unit.

I’ve been in the trade for 35 years, installed 100s of Goodman units.. they are just like the rest of them, it’s a box of parts,they all use the same parts. I have had more issues with tranes and carriers... it’s all hype and marketing.. it all comes down to cleaning and maintenance..

At the end of the day the HVAC industry has consolidated to using a few tried and true technologies such as Copeland Scroll Compressors, Honeywell Controls. Similar to the automakers, most BMWs, Audis, and Mercedes are 90% the same components from the same suppliers. With the auto market, BMW is mainly responsible for making engine, design, assembly, and marketing. The rest of the tech is outsourced to specialty suppliers. The HVAC world is pretty much the same now. Most of the prices are based on hype and marketing. Most of the units on the market are quite reliable with a few exceptions.

HVAC units are a great mystery to many folks. It's "that box outside" and "that thing in the attic." Many manufacturers (especially the ones that have advertised for years on television and print media) leave the impression that they manufacture EVERYTHING in the box, which is not true. The 'old' Goodman used crappy Bristol compressors in their low-end line in the 1990s (I know, I owned one.) Now they use what most everyone else uses, the Copeland Scroll. There are a wide variety of scroll compressor brands used in mini-splits including Panasonic and LG. Contactors are made by a variety of manufacturers... My neighbor is a HVAC tech - he prefers US made MARS capacitors when he can get them, but there are a LOT of different capacitor brands. The HVAC companies do make their sheet metal, some make their own coils... But they are really ASSEMBLERS of parts - kind of like a car. As this KZbinr states, the Goodman brand today is NOT the same one from before 2017. My neighbor is a Lennox and American Standard dealer, but he said he would not hesitate to use a Goodman in certain applications. They are designed to be simple and reliable, using standard parts that will be easy to service for years to come. And their warranties are impressive.

'most everyone else uses, the Copeland Scroll' NO! that is not true, MOST do not use the scroll compressor, there are ALOT that use the ROTARY compressor, and the truth about HVAC equipment is they are ALL good, no one brand is better then the other, what make it appear 'one brand is better then the other' is the quality of the INSTALL ! PERIOD!

Ok, I must comment. Purchased the home in which I am now seated as I write…. in 1991. The two Goodman units installed by the builder sit on their pads to this day keeping this Las Vegas home cool. The real kicker- they have barely been touched. One unit never has. The other is on its second condenser motor- failed just last week. Any questions?? Thinking I’m going to replace them this coming spring if for no other reason other than keeping the home updated and gain some efficiency. Not even looking at any other manufacturer- why should I?

If I am an HVAC installer, and just want to make money, I'd rather install those expensive brands system so i can charge more for labor. Because, the amount of works are the same to install any brand system out there. Goodman systems are much less expensive compared to others, so it's hard to charge the labor cost as high as other expensive brand. Plus Goodman systems and parts are inexpensive and widely available online and can be sold to anyone. Many homeowners, myself included had bought parts or even whole system online and replaced or installed ourself without the need of HVAC tech involved. I think this is the main reason, many tech don't like Goodman brand and talked trash about their quality. I for one will pick Goodman brand over any other brand anytime due the fact that I still have 20 yrs old 10 seers Goodman system which is still blowing freezing cold air and keep my house cool at 77 degree on those 100+ hot days in summer. And I had not called a HVAC tech once. I live in hot climate zone and can't afford to be without AC for any moment, so I did acquired all the spare parts online very cheap for the system except evap coil and compressor just in case any component go bad, I can troubleshoot and replace them myself in few mins. and save quite bit of money. IMO, Goodman is a value, reliable and affordable brand like Toyota or Honda while Other brands are like Audi, BMW, Mercedes..etc. If i have to replace my system, i will get Goodman. It's just an ac system as long as it works reliably who care what brand. It's hard to find a decent trusted hvac tech these day, so i'll try to avoid them as much as possible.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't they have a very big quality issue with their "microchannel" technology used to manufacture their condensers? Leak galore...Yeah good warranty BUT who needs the hassle of making a warranty claim in the middle of a hot summer? I still see HVAC videos here on YT whereby they're complaining about this one reliability issue.

My elderly mother did purchase one & the person who sold & installed most definitely ripped her off like it was no tomorrow I I think the manufacturer Goodman's fault for not hiring capable contractors to sell their products this damn thing sounds like an F-14 taking off a dam aircraft carrier you cannot talk in the kitchen without this thing's going to be more than uncomfortable decibels I could not believe my mother wrote the check after hearing this damn thing go off I'll guarantee you you would not have let that guy walk out the door with the check I would have told him to put the old one back in there and get that ass off my property I would love Goodman representative come out and hear it guarantee he would not want that in his mother's house. Now I guarantee you I'm a reasonable person I know there are unscrupulous contractors but again if Goodman Sunday sell their product to them they take a little control so then people like me are not complaining about the crap
@dairconditioning6030

Hi Rob. Goodman does not hire contractors. The problem with Goodman products is that they are easily accessible by every contractor. They sell their products to multiple distributors in a region and those distributors sell to anyone with a C-20 license. This is why Goodman reputation is hit or miss. Since most of the problems come from the installer. Lennox and Carrier are more selective about the contractors that they sell to so the quality overall is better. At the end of the day, the customer needs to evaluate the capabilities of the contractor that they hire. You should ask for photos and references from other customers.

@@albertlevet119 For the most part, the Daikin, Amana, and Goodman units are the same units. They are made in the same facility in Houston Texas and come off the same production line. Daikin is really known for their manufacturing so they found that it is more efficient to make few products with higher volume. This is the same strategy that Honda and Toyota uses for their cars. They used to be their own brand back in the 60s-70s that were known to work well in high heat areas like in Arizona and Nevada. Then Some business CEO bought the name and takes Goodman units and re brands them at Geottl. I know they sure charge a lot for a goodman unit becuase they are a large corporate conglomerate installation company, and most of the HVAC companies are smaller privately owned or mom and pop companies.

@@mikehunt2190 Goettl does pay a lot for radio ads. So they have to get their money from somewhere. As a consumer it is better to research the HVAC company that you want to work with and get a few quotes. Some larger players do mass marketing and so their advertising budget and high overhead gets passed to the customer.

I installed high eff. 2 stage Goodman equipment in my own home in 2011, so far so good. Very happy with the quiet performance and only had to repair one of the furnace pressure (vacuum) switches which was inexpensive and easy to get. Tried to recently order a 16 SEER, 2 stage package unit for a rental house but there was no stock in the USA and the price was more than $1,000 higher than the 14 SEER. As far the variable speed products I haven't compared prices but according to my research Goodman made an inexcusable mistake by not offering an integral static pressure gauge which would allow much easier zoning control.

I have to disagree strongly with your use of the term "low end market". Other than the very well known deficiency in the sheet metal chassis material Goodman uses, the main internal parts compressor, gas valve, pressure switches, PCB etc are the same or equivalent quality to what I call the OVERPRICED brands. Down the road, Goodman repair parts are reasonably priced and readily available. I opted to pay a little more for their high eff. 2 stage system back in 2011. Its super quite and reliable. This is the definition of "value" not low end!!

DO NOT BUY GOODMAN AC UNITS, I purchased 2 units in 2016 (8 years ago), they gave me a Registration Certificate receipt with 10 years parts ALL PARTS warranty on paper under my name. One of the units broke and I called to have warranty honored to find out they didn't want to honor it, their excuse was that the property on tax roll was under an LLC and the Certificate is under my name (Am the owner of property and president of LLC) but this is excuse to not honor warranty, they said that they're warranty and tax roll name must match, so they seem to warranty property not appliances, what a joke.....
