Are grades the only indication of merit?

On our weekly face-off, we debate whether a student's aptitude should be judged solely by the marks he/she receives. Are grades the only indication of merit or should other factors also be considered? Also on the show, students debate what it takes to be successful and what do people look at to judge your merit and aptitude.
