Are Graffiti Artists Cowards Nowadays or Legends?

Graffiti is all about getting your name up in public as much as possible, and often times that means you're putting a lot on the line when tagging. Today I want to talk about whether or not graffiti artists have become cowards over the years. While writers in the past used to take risks just to hit the best spots in graffiti, now writers stay home and hit their iPads, or hit chill spots and post it online. Transitioning from trains to walls has also encouraged the standard of having “more” spots rather than higher quality ones, having throws on different blocks so people will know you through repetition rather than one solid piece

Pretty based take on this one, can't say i disagree. It's a good point that you make in emphasising that those big things like the SABER piece or the SEEN Hollywood sign were events that were few and far between. I think over time, and definitely with social medias tendency to bring attention to the same things over and over again, it's easy these days to become acclimatised to their existence and lose any perspective of what they were in context of everything else. When you said that, i was like "hey true, there IS only a handful of those kind of legendary things, i just hear about them a lot". And yeah i mean i definitely never felt like there were less legendary sort of things nowadays. Maybe they arent always raw traditional things, for example i would say SOFLES has posted some legendary youtube videos, and although it doesn't come with clout for hitting a sweet spot, not only did he already prove himself on the streets but i feel like you gotta just respect his stuff because of how f***ing good it is. But then you do still have the occasional wild stories from the streets like ETHER and UTAH with their worldwide bombing tour, that was much more recent. Its funny, for all the things i like in life, it's graffiti - a thing often criticised for being a dead end hobby and a waste of time - that has endured the time with the most consistency and solidarity. I'm not afraid for the future of graffiti culture. We've seen a lot of kings leave their mark, and we've got a lot of kings to look forward to seeing in the future. Bring it on. 🔥

I guess security got a lot tighter in tons of places, but at the same time technology advanced a lot and a proper purpose made can nowadays won't compare to whatever was widely available back then.. everything changes over time, it's just the way it is.

Internet changed everything. So...YES. No idea how what having to really mission to get up. New Gen got internet/cars etc maybe im just an old head. Also lack of Trains... Depending where you are i suppose

I think that, with the rise of smart phones, graffiti turned from gangsteresque violence and turf wars, or bloodshed over pieces and words, to hiding behind a screen and likes. I know a kid that blocks people and has a public Instagram as if to show that he isn't a dog. It's too easy to get good quality paint and the divide between the rich and poor is greater than ever. So, yes, and no. Legends, from my area and era, are easily forgotten and replaced by fools.
