It's important for potential horse players to remember that although the base HP stat is decent, the HP reduction from a broken limb is both permanent due to the lighter bone density of the legs and guaranteed to lead to an eventual game over due to issues with their blood circulation since they have a glitch where the hooves are necessary to help pump blood around the body. This is in stark contrast to many other player factions, where broken limbs can be an acceptable risk to ensure overall survival.

What's worse for horse players in particular compared to other equines is that this trade-off would be a pretty good one if a broken bone is likely to eventually kill you anyway, as is the case with most builds. One of the few times where this is a bad trade-off is when your build has access to medical care, so it's a terrible downside for a domesticated build like the horse. Unfortunately the perks from this trade-off are likely a factor in why horses were domesticated in the first place. It's really a no win situation. It's not a bad trade-off for Zebra players though. Especially in Africa, breaking a leg is almost certain to get you killed anyway, so you might as well get some benefit out of that risk.

7:54 one reason that steppe nomads like the Mongols were so effective in warfare was this move, the Parthian shot, firing an arrow backwards off a horse. It’s cool to know that both horse and rider were high-tier for the same reason, the ability to attack while fleeing.

I think mentioning the donkey's value as a party member went underrated. While horses are relatively easier to understand and work with in a team comp, a donkey properly incorporated into a comp with a human farmer is INCREDIBLE. They can essentially fill the roles of dogs but BETTER in almost every way except for ease of care. But if the benefit is so large, that issue becomes less important. Horses will always be the famous duo with humans, but donkeys' value in an ACTUALLY WIDELY RELEVANT comp in the modern meta is something that I'd expect to see give them much more staying power. Horses are a fun build humans like to play with, but practically that's only a luxury nowadays. The comp they became famous in is no longer meta-relevant. It's hardly a rogue strat.

My favourite game to play with stable staff at the stable I go to a lot is "what's the dumbest way a horse got injured/killed this year" So far this year it's a horse getting so incredibly intimidated by a pigeon, who had set up a nest in its stall in the couple hours the horse was grazing on the field, that he tried to escape the stall, and eventually succeeded by breaking the fucking door. He had lots of small cuts and bruises and took a near lethal amount of psychic damage, oh and he also broke the door beyond repair. So he had to be moved. The pigeon successfully raised 2 babies.

An addendum to what you mentioned at the end - the horse (Equus ferus) indeed originated in North America about one million years ago, then migrated to Eurasia around 800,000 years ago. All horses still in the Americas went extinct by the beginning of the Holocene. Modern horses come from a population native to the Eurasian steppe, where they were domesticated by humans some time around 3500 BCE. They were originally smaller and stockier in build, more similar to Przewalski's horse or the Tarpan. Today's domesticated horses have been selectively bred for strength, speed, agility, intelligence, and aesthetics, depending on what breed you're talking about. So to be fair to donkeys and zebras, they are probably a bit more comparable stat-wise to a true wild horse.

a small addition to the donkey class i learned from talking with a donkey tamer. Donkeys originated from and are suited for rocky and mountaineous terrain hence why they dont run from predators but rather stand their ground. if they were to just run and reposition to land critical hits with their kick ability, they'd be more likely to suffer from lethal environmental damage such as falling off a cliff. It isnt that they are inert due stubbornness it is just the calm and steady approach to improve survivability in the terrain they originate from, this likely is one of the reasons they tend to bite as a defensive move because there might be no where to run for repositioning. I cant properly compare them to horses or zebras but its just something that should be considered in my opinion since its often overlooked because nowadays they are used as support in all kinds of environments instead of the one they evolutionary adapted to.

Many points over the Donkey build were missed. Specifically, their “Moxie” ability. Donkeys are able to ignore all debuffs caused by intimidation from other players, making them capable of rushing down players who believe they are too scary for an equine to attack. While they may do the least amount of damage compared to other equines, donkeys deal the fastest damage. They also don’t get fear debuffs from nearby corpses. While they may default to solo play, donkeys make excellent team players. While most equine players will only protect either themselves or others of their build, donkeys do not discriminate and will fight for players that are outside of their species, thanks to their high intelligence. For these reasons, it can even be suggested that donkeys are the most survivable of the equines.

Imagine mixing the stamina, strength, and HP of a horse and the Sure-Footed feat from donkeys, you get a mount great for moving across difficult terrain that doubles as a great beast of burden, and not to forget the bonus to damage against canines also gained from donkeys. Such is the power of the mule that the devs nerfed them by making them sterile (although some data miners have found a way of allowing mules to gain the maternity side quest, but the resulting offspring is always a duplicate avatar of the mother’s). In summary, the mule is a great support build that will help many other players across their many walkthroughs.

Fun fact: the reason that chariots were used in earlier civilizations was because horses cooping with humans had not yet up-spec'd their sizes enough to be able to carry a military-equipped human in battle. Once coop equines got large enough to do this, you began seeing extra large horses which were capable of operating through a battle while carrying a fit human with ~50 pounds of armor and whatever their weapons weighed. Some jousting specific armor reached ~100 pounds, but this (as well as the larger, specialized lances used) was used in specialized accolade quests and not on military battlefields where stamina is actually required. While a bit of an off tangent, many humans have a tendency to think their forebearers were dumb and primitive, but make no mistake that the armor they wore (at least to battlefields) was actually made to be quite flexible by using proper joint placement and such (something that replica makers are often very bad at, leaving you with show armor that is shiny but can't even let you bend over without digging into you). But yeah, back to horses. This upsizing they took on for greater load bearing capacity may have exacerbated some of their already borderline min-maxed choices. Comparing natural builds to things like Clydesdales is thus not a 1:1 match-up.

@@SephirothRyu Actually even during the era of chariots horses were still ridden solo, but mostly for scouting or raiding rather than direct combat. And outside of combat they were still made good modes of transportation because riding is better than walking even on a small horse. While the fact that donkeys are stubborn and solitary does make them harder to team up with, their higher intelligence actually makes them much better team members than the horse for the humans who do manage to add them to their party. They are much more versatile and easily understand what humans want from them. And while it's harder to add them to your party, once they are in your party they are very loyal. Their better senses combined with their intelligence and poise make them much more unlikely to accidentally attack a teammate like horses do all the frigging time. Horses have mostly been used for PvP or fast travel by humans but donkeys? They have been used for everything. I still agree that as a build in general horses are better than donkeys but I gotta say that as a human main, I'd actually rate the donkeys higher as a support build than the horses.

The horse at 4:38 had unfortunately died and passed away from that kick due to the mare, they did poor safety for the stallion and mare so it wouldn’t happen. Unfortunately sometimes these things happen, and sometimes it’s 1 in 100 or 1000 to hit the right spot with a horses kick. The mare kicked the stallion right in the center of a thinnish part of its skull (if I remember correctly, it’s been a long time), but other then that I think it’s absolutely awesome on how powerful their kicks are!

As a horse owner (5), I would say that they have many hidden weapons, besides rear kicks, punches are really high dps when doing front damage (they can easily break a door, a human arm/skull or oneshot a small to medium size predators), head blows as well can be quite dangerous in close combat, the tail is used often as a whip causing temporary blindness to the attacker, also the bite is nasty, the front teeth can rip even thick skin or break bones, and most dangerous of all, they can use a buff of adrenaline rush that will double the attack power and ignore pain. We are lucky that they are not meat eaters :D

I agree, they have many hidden abilities, that can be improved with training of the stats, but even their base stats are incredibly strong. Since they are flight animals, I haven’t seen many in the wild do this, unless it is two stallions duelling, but otherwise, it’s very rare to see.

Absolutely this, and I can talk about how painful that tail whip can be, enough to draw some blood if they strike you with force in the right spot, like in the neck! the dad of the farrier in my stable lost his eye to a horse tail whip. Also the head blow is also dangerous, they can lift you like a ragdoll with their neck and move their head so fast, considering their head weights like 50kg (100 pounds) you are for a very powerful blow if they give you a head bash, a lot people have died like that. I always thought they would be some pretty scary predators if they were as they are build now, luckily they arent and are actually pretty nice.

I think you missed one of the horses biggest stamina increasing perks. Most builds require active breathing whilst moving at high speeds. This is energy intensive, and if the rhythm of breathing is out of sync with the strides it can incur an additional stamina drain penalty. Horses, and other equines, don't do this. Instead, as they reach higher speeds, they stop actively breathing, and allow the backwards and forwards movements of there gastrointestinal tract during the strides to actuate there lungs. This saves a significant amount of energy, and is always in sync with the stride, preventing any additional stamina drain penalties.

The croc had the zebra by the tricep, which wasn't a great hold but the zebra couldn't get away. The zebra, instead of panicking, calmly turned its head and scraped its teeth over the croc's eye until the croc let go. It was such a deliberate action, no thrashing or struggling! I wish I could find that video again, it was amazing to watch.

There is a thing in the donkey's intelligence thou that makes it far more dangerous to small to medium sized predators than a horse. Donkey's are overall less prone to react to a stress situation with panic like a horse does, resulting in a more tactical and aggressive fight Style. There is a reason, why sheep herders keep donkeys and not horses to defend against wolves. And Zebras tend to bite far more than horses do, too. I would actually group them all together in A tier, as they all have different but highly effective play styles specific to their main server. And Namibian horses survive because they are fed by humans through harsh times, which Zebras aren't

That's a real Human main perspective though. While humans are dominating the meta, they aren't everywhere and aren't always an option to party with. Donkey's always wanting to solo unless trained by a human is what makes them essentially waste the intelligence stat. High intelligence creatures can only truly grow as a species if they communicate that intelligence socially. To use a human phrase, solo intelligence builds are left constantly reinventing the wheel.

4:38 I literally clicked on this video to see if this clip made it in!! If you've ever seen the original clip, it's really sad. The horse handlers brought in a stallion to breed a mare, but they did so with the mare's foal present. So, naturally, the mare's protective instincts clicked in and she delivered one fatal kick to the stallion's head. He immediately collapsed to the ground, emptied his bowels, and never got back up. He had died immediately. Stallions will kill the offspring of rival males, which is why the mare was so protective. The horse handlers did not know about this, which got their beautiful stallion killed by the mare. And breeding stallions are not cheap. They lost a very expensive breeding stallion because of their stupid mistake.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the plenty of weaknesses of horses. Like, how the structure of their anatomy causes them to be very fragile, especially the delicate bones in their legs and feet. They also cannot vomit, even in the case of extreme intestinal distress, and in the rare case that they do, it's almost always fatal. Nonetheless, great video as always!
@teresashinkansen9402
@teresashinkansen9402 Жыл бұрын
A horse's legs are indeed a weakness but they aren't fragile at all, they are actually quite strong, they look thin and fragile but that's because most of the musculature is close to their body and not on their legs, if you compare the thickness of the leg bones of a horse and a human you will see that their bones are slightly ticker in proportion yet shorter and much more dense giving them significantly stronger bones. The reason why they seem to break easily is because they are large animals massively strong and the forces encountered while they run, fall or get stuck are very great, they cannot really move with a broken limb so it is a death sentence in the wild. I saw a horse crash against a gate made of relatively thick steel pipe, about 2 1/2 inches in diameter with a wall of about 1/8" yet he managed to bend the gate and one of the pipes was badly bent where he hit it with his leg, it looked as if a car crashed on the gate. Luckily he didn't got a fracture but needed stitches and rest on a stall because got some bad inflammation, later we tried to bend back the gate but we couldn't do it, we even tried to drive a pick up truck over it but the most bent pipe didn't got back to its original shape, he managed to stretch the damn pipe, you need a force of tonnes to do that! its when I realized how freaking strong horses are. So yeah their legs and digestive system is their Achilles' heel but in the case of legs not because they are fragile but because they cannot move and heal once a fracture happens.

I think you glossed over a lot of what makes the donkey build so good, and I personally would place them in A tier with horses for a few reasons. The first is their intelligence, which you did cover but this upgraded stat unlocks the ability to be taught by human masters similar to dogs. This allows donkey players to achieve high ranking positions in human bases, particularly on the livestock farm where they act as a guardian for the animals and even the humans themselves. The second reason is their unparalleled intimidation resolve and stubbornness. Even top tier builds like elephants will find their efforts to intimidate veteran donkey players will never work, and this coupled with their famous stubborn reputation makes fighting any donkey player a harrowing task that will only be complete once the donkey is sent to the main menu. Donkey players have taken an A tier build and decided to go rogue with it, and what they created was nothing short of a prodigy and there’s a reason why human farmers have a saying “if you have the choice between a 16 gauge shotgun and a donkey, the donkey is more worth it because they don’t need ammo and you don’t have to reload them”

I love the breakdown this gives for players new to equine gameplay. I know that this video can't get to all the nuances (I could talk about frame-perfect flying lead transitions all day!), but I want prospective horse players to know that the relatively low HP of equine builds (scaled for weight class) comes with serious challenges. In order to take perks that enable OP sprint speed and the iconic kick parry the horse relies on its legs a lot and injuries to them are run-ending. Especially to the feet, which can easily become infected in wet biomes. Because of the roaming playstyle of the horse, it is extremely hard for a horse player to rest for long enough to recover from a leg injury. Beware environmental hazards like soft mud, sharp loose stones, smooth mountain rocks, hidden holes, ice, and other terrain hazards because slipping and falling is the easiest way to pop a stifle or worse. One of the advantages of other ungulates using horns to extend the hitbox is that horns tend not to be critical to mobility. So because horses use mobility strat as such a major part of their attack setup, kicking can be a higher risk move than you'd think. If a horse player misses and they injure that foot, they've lost the ability to escape. Part of why the high-INT team strategies with human players can be so OP is that human players with their tool use and building abilities can create relatively safe zones or equip gear to horses to mitigate some of their low HP fragility risks, and because of the horse build's high endurance those safe zones can be in almost any biome. I do want to point out however that zebras and horses prefer flat terrain in whatever biome they inhabit and don't do as well ascending or descending elevated terrain. The donkey build is somewhat more effective in high elevation maps and their INT stat really helps problem solving about how to get around hazards without broken wallhax perks like the bighorn sheep or mountain goat. In these environments the donkey's sprint speed doesn't matter as much as there's no flat straightaways to escape and because they compromised on the mobility stat I think that's why they lost power on the kick. Another challenge to equine builds is that their digestion can be sensitive as well as inefficient. They do not belch to the same degree as ruminant builds so the gas from processed food has to escape the other way, and if they eat something that produces too much gas, impacts their digestion, or poisons them it can apply the dangerous status condition 'colic.' This is the number one run-ender for domestic horse builds. Be careful out there, and fellow horse mains remember: stay away from foxglove but you ARE valid to eat fingers, don't forget your forward lunge has amazing distance coverage and auto-applies a morale debuff.

There seems to be lots of confusion and misinformation regarding the “horses are originally from North America” part. Some people are claiming this is false information. However, it is technically correct. The ancestors to modern horses actually ARE from North America. Modern species are not. They migrated across the Bering straight crossing long before humans domesticated them, and spread across the entire world, ending up in Africa where they evolved into zebras. Then, North American horses went extinct and were later brought back to the New World by humans. This was several thousands of years ago. All modern horse species originate from Europe, Asia, or Africa, but those species are descendant from species native to North America. Edit: I am speaking about the whole Equus genus (Horses, Zebras, Donkeys and Mules) here. Obviously specific species like Zebras didn’t originate from NA, but the next step up from species, Genus, most certainly did originate from the New World.

I find it interesting that despite the humans crafting superior artificial mounts, horses are still part of their parties as a support class. Sometimes an unorthodox build is exactly what makes something high tier.
@bluesbest1
@bluesbest1 2 жыл бұрын
There's a lot more danger to the artificial mounts. For one thing, they're either a couple tons of steel or you need to be able to keep it upright. Then there's the speed. Higher speed is generally a major benefit, but then you have to worry about everyone else going at the high speed, too. Horses can avoid collisions all on their own in a way that the artificial ones can't.

What was missing here is that in this Famine that China suffered, ALL Western countries left China alone. China received NO HELP from anyone. In other famines such as in India, in Africa, in Ireland or even the one suffered by Haiti, the wester nations contributed. In Bangladesh they contributed. In Bengal, the wester nations contributed. In Biafra, they contributed. Who does not remember the "Africa LIVE AID" of 1985, to help Somalia and Ethiopia? I still remember the song: "We are the World". And for China... NOTHING. This country, China, faced disaster alone and came out stronger than ever in its history. Alone. Without invading any sovereign country. Without stealing anyone's resources. Without attacking and without intervening in the affairs of other nations. Alone. Working hard to become the second world economic power. 40 years ago China was starving. Today, China has its own Space Station and is already on Mars. Today, the Chinese are proud to be Chinese. Three decades ago, the Chinese felt humiliated. Well not anymore. Never more! And finally. It's True: There was a terrible Famine. And yes, it is true. The Famine was Mao's fault... But, the Famine was also because China suffered 37 years of WAR! China was at uninterrupted war for 37 years! (Just between 1913-1949 have: --Xinhai Revolution: Failed New Empire Coup. --Second Xinhai Revolution. --National Protection War. --Warlord Infighting Across China. --First United Front: Northern Expedition. --First Chinese Civil War. --Second United Front: Protection against Japan in the WWII. --Second Chinese Civil War). U see? China was at war! This is why the Famine happened and not just Mao. China suffered more than two years of Hungry (1959-1961), and although Famines have been present throughout the history of mankind, they have never been as cruel as in China and its almost 5 million deaths. Przewalski's horse which shares common ancestry with what became today the modern horse are native to Asia never been, in the old world. Just Papers from the USA publish that they are native to the old world. Yes, a lot of its evolution took place in the new world, but it did not originate there and was not domesticated there. Also, Mustangs are not wild horses, they are feral horses(horses that were brought to the new world and escaped).

@@stevewall7044 The papers that say they came from the US are published in US journals, but in academia the most rigorous and highly regarded journals are from the USA, so that doesn't disprove their point. There may be debate, as there always is in academia, but it isn't laughably incorrect to say that they originated from North America since that is the consensus of the scientific community.

I'd argue donkey is at least A tier. on equine builds, higher INT actually influences a lot of other stats which means stacking INT is broken af for equine. you get more stam, higher stealth perception, higher CON (can travel more easily through worse terrain), and a defense bonus (your char is less prone to environmental damage or friendly fire). they're a fantastic support class, esp in pvp vs canines. but if you really wanna tear shit up, mules are even more broken since they get increased stm/health/def/str and stacking int works the same. only downside is you can't play through any of the child-rearing levels most other classes have access to. no joke, donkeys are great flock guardians. they fuck up dogs/etc like it's not even funny. stubborn as shit, less fear. great animals.

The horse and the hawk strategy are being used to this day in certain areas in Mongolia and other regions of asia (like Republic of Buryatia, Tyva, Yakutia, Kazakhstan, ect.) for hunting. The terrain is in many places too difficult even for specialised vehicles to drive on. There isn't an extensive road infrastructure due to low population density. People living in remote villages and nomads often have to rely on themselves using the methods of their ancestors. In some places, there are small planes flying between those villages to supply them, mostly in far eastern Russia, but it isn't always reliable.

Horses are too stupid to harm you on purpose and in general very friendly, so as long as you're nice and steady slow with your movements, you approach them from the side (basically just stay well within their FOV, look up a diagram if you're curious), and you watch their ears (both facing forward/ one facing forward the other swiveling around = chill, both ears halfway between forward and backwards = eeehhh, ears pinned back = stay back) they'll just act like very big weird dogs. Also don't keep staring at them. The slow blink works, but unlike cats they won't blink back. Looking away also works. Staring at them makes them think you're wanting to pounce them, so that makes them nervous. My mom's horse will literally lie down and lay her head in your lap if you sit down in her safe space and she trusts you. And she then just enjoys the pets. They're also prey animals and pretty damn big, so they need more personal space than dogs/cats. Again just watch the ears and any sign they might be feeling nervous. They're more afraid of you than you are of them. And they get nervous if you act nervous. If you act like you've got the biggest balls this side of the mississippi while also still being respectful of their space, they'll be a lot less nervous. They're just nervous wrecks in general who absolutely adore pets and scritchies once they trust and feel safe with you! Also they lose all their fear if you have food. Gluttons. When feeding a horse, keep your hand flat. They're too stupid not to accidentally bite your fingers if you don't. If you do get bitten while giving food, they don't mean it, they're just really dumb and food motivated. You probably weren't looking for advice, but hey, can't hurt. Horses are some of my favourite animals and it's just like hearing someone is afraid of dogs for me. Also the same size = assholishness rule applies for horses. The smaller they are, the ruder they are.

I'm sharing a shelter with multiple teams right now, one of them includes a horse. He's part of the sub -race, draft horse, so his size and power stat are boosted, plus he took the unique police horse support class early in his play-through in the Texas meta, allowing him to drop the skittish disadvantage a lot of domesticated horses have. He got the cancer debuff a while ago, but that has since been removed and it opened up the retirement level. When police horses in the Texas meta reach the retirement level, their allies select a non police human player to act as their teammate for the rest of their lives, so that's how he ended up in this team

I can never get over using golden eagles for falconry. It's not called 'eaglery,' so many people would use things as small as kestrels up to medium hawks like goshawks and red tails. But the Mongols never did anything halfway apparently, and went for one of the largest birds of prey alive today. And golden eagles are sassy, proud, and haughty birds, too. They can and will hold grudges, and have the capability to seriously mess you up if they want to.

VERY surprised that the many, many health issues that horses can run into weren't brought up. I used to work with them and by god... they are surprisingly fragile. If they break a leg too severely, they can't lay down long enough for it to heal without running into multi-organ failure (i.e. more than like, a few hours. They literally start to crush their own organs if they stay down for even an hour), so the leg isn't ever going to heal. Also, bc of how they're built, they have VERY high blood pressure, especially when running, and are prone to heart and other cardiovascular issues. They actually developed specialized veins to help with the blood pressure, but it just made new heart issues for them, and their blood pressure is still too high. They also have very weak diaphragms for animals that's main purpose is to run, so a respiratory infection will cripple the horse instantly because their lungs are Weak As Shit. Speaking of their lungs, they just, stop actively breathing when running, relying instead on their organs swinging around to make them breathe. Which is efficient! But simultaneously means their insides/abdominals is way too flexible compared to what it should be, so they get so many hernias and other intestinal/organ issues from it all just sloshing around willy nilly. And this is naming just a FEW problems (I am not even getting into how breaking a leg also technically asphyxiates them a wee bit and gives them more heart problems, somehow. Or how paranoid, skittish, and violent they can be, holy fuck.)

Good video, however, in donkeys defense, you forgot to mention the "Stubborn" passive, that gives them a considerable morale and resistance boost, as well as the ability "Calling" which allows them to call party members, like humans. Not only that, but some have also learned one of the most toxic race abilities "Spit" used by llamas, a well aimed spit can temporaly blind enemies.
