In modern apartments and houses of India, generally they have multiple bathrooms (at least 1 attached to a bedroom). In India, it is common to have big families, as parents might live in with your family too. Also, it is very common in India to invite relatives or friends to the houses to stay over for few days. Generally Indians don't like their friends to stay at hotels when they visit their city. So, they rather host them. So, multiple bathrooms make sense in those scenarios.

I have a hypothesis about the bathrooms. Up until 60s/70s we had these big 'joint families', a lot of people living in the same house. And in those traditional Indian houses, there used to be only one bathroom, separate from the living space and bedrooms, as different unit within the compound. So it used to be a common visual in the morning that people queuing up in front of the bathroom to have a chance. I believe this trauma got embedded in our collective psyche. So when the successive generations got the chance, they got a bit carried away and overdid themselves 😂. Now we have a bathroom per bedroom.

I'm all for this overdoing!!!!
@suerayss3 жыл бұрын
Brilliant point. I think it also has become a symbol of upward mobility and affluence. Even a middle class family now wants a bathroom for themselves to contrast it with the lower middle class or poor standing in queues at a chawl system or public toilet in a slum or worse walk into the fields or woods with a 'lotta' of water in their hands like millions of indians perhaps still do. Its somewhat of a "i have arrived moment" with a attached bathroom like say 'room service' privilege at a hotel..hehehe.
@sushreeshashwata3 жыл бұрын
Hahaha the trauma 😂 But having lived like that for me attached bathroom is the ultimate luxury/comfort and all for here even though they take valuable space in small apartments.

You right bro. We all are over doing it. Even in a super nuclear family of 3 persons, if we have a 2 bedroom house, one of them is a master bedroom, only meaning with an attached toilet. Ivana, the reason for multiple bathrooms is that 2-3 generations live together in the same house. So it increases privacy. Second, 3-4 people go out if the house between 7-8 am in such houses, for work, school etc. so if the only one bathroom gets occupied, then everyone gets late.

Even In India we used to have common bathrooms up until sometime back. The private bathroom thing is started in cities, especially in apartments in 2000s, usually these apartments are bought by young generation people who prefer privacy . In India we don;t have a concept of dressing room or powder room, that may be another reason to have attached bathrooms so that females of the household dress up in the bedroom once they take bath.

Most middle class small town houses in india also have one bathroom. Now a days it's changing but I'm sure 70% of Indian homes still have one bathroom. In villages you'll rarely find more than one bathroom. Just 20-25yrs back, it was very rare to have more than one bathroom in homes of people who aren't super rich. So it's a fairly new thing that is happening due to better living standards.. I guess now a days young Indians are getting a little conscious about their privacy while still staying in a joint family, I guess. Because just few years back, privacy didn't exist
@abhishekmaurya34533 жыл бұрын
It is not privacy Infact privacy ranks the lowest of all the reasons to have multiple bathrooms. Main reason that over 90% people go for multiple bathrooms is to use the empty one incase one is occupied really useful in the morning when everyone needs to be ready for school, office etc. Money is definitely a factor for having attached bathrooms but that Trend is nowhere near even 1% in popularity although what you are talking about is having "multiple common" bathrooms that is definitely what is getting a lot of attention because it saves space and by just having 2 especially in space constraint apartments it provides much more usefulness to the whole house even if there are only 4 people living in a flat it is worth the investment for 1 extra bathroom for the same reason of time saving. The people who want to have attached bathrooms definitely want for privacy reasons but the popularity is practically non-existent except in luxurious apartment complexes which are already expensive in the first place. Population is very large and space is less you won't see attached bathrooms being popular in India pretty much ever. Most middle-class flat and apartments are less than 900sq ft which can't afford to have space dedicated to attached bathrooms instead they will always choose to have 2 common bathrooms and larger bedrooms and living room area.

Nice comparison Ivana..great video as always..coming back to some of ur questions 1) attached bathroom: privacy reasons. One can take his or her own time not worrying about other person waiting outside. A person is mentally free in his or her own space. 2) closets: biggest reason is comfort. The idea is that the apartment is “ready to move” and one need not worry about buying closets. 3) Sitting on the floor: health benefits. There are a loads of health benefits associated with sitting on the floor. Whether it is sitting sitting or eating while sitting. 4) Stone floor: dust problem definitely but another reason is because of the heat plus less maintenance due to the climate (bugs and all). You are right. Wooden floors are best suited for cold places such as Himachal or Sikkim. Better insulation. Enjoy enjoyyyyy

The big change I have noticed coming back to India from England after many many years is people don't ask for ladies, gents or toilet but they ask if there is any washroom. Which I find quite decent. However, there are still some people who uses the word bathroom when they mean toilet which is funny.

We take at least two showers a day. The flats are not air conditioned and weather is hot and humid.

I guess the furnished flat thing is optional in most places like you have furnished as well as non- furnished flats so that you can have furniture of your liking

I have lived in Netherlands and the biggest shock for me was to use induction cooktops there and always use a flat bottom woks .. I had to adjust the cooking style quite a bit Secondly heaters in Netherlands do not have temperature setting , it can be difficult to get the right temperature Thirdly I had an apartment in Netherlands with bathtub only , it was quite uncomfortable as we are not used to it

Seating on floor for eating food or any other Indian postures have nature's science behind it.☺️🌸

Marble flooring is optional. If you purchase a new flat from a builder, then you can pay a little extra to get it marbled. Or one can have a regular mozaic

If there's one thing I hate the most, that's sitting on the floor while eating. I can't eat much (maybe that's just me) 😂 But I like the Japanese way of having a low dining table and sit on the floor

It's very very unusual for me to comment on KZbin. Commenting here as I observed one great quality of yours from the 3 videos I watched. You have always pointed out only positives about India, Bengaluru (about Netherlands too in this video). I believe it wouldn't just be to promote your channel but you as a person must have evolved your personality altogether because in another video you did mention that you always try to look at positive elements n stay away from negative things. Commendable trait. Keep it up.

Eating in India by sitting in floors gives regular physical activities and yoga type of eating makes more healthier than sitting & dining on a dining table for which also had histories of thousands of years in ramayan and Mahabharata any how you are liking Indian culture more than Dutch thank you

What you are referring to as stone floor may not be stone floor( with due respect to you). Those may be stone textured full body vitrified tiles which mimic natural marbles & now a days also wood.
