You have quite a few options too now: base FP is grimdark fantasy, The Last War is post-apoc ww1, Kill Sample Process is cyberpunk, Dread Nights is victorian gothic horror, there's a new mech version coming out called Steel Psalm, and they launched a Kickstarter for Endless Horrors From Between the Stars which will be their cosmic horror cult game. For anyone who loves Warhammer Fantasy or Warhammer 40k, the natural alternative game is probably One Page Rules. I prefer that set of rules as I like how small the rules are, and alternating activation of units so the players get more activity back and forth instead of just sitting and waiting. And the OTHER big wargame that is popular, BattleTech.

Saga has both historical and fantasy rules. DBA and Hordes of the Things are great for larger games but don’t break your bank on tons of miniatures. I am becoming a fan of battletech for the price point and it is very fun (although crunchy). Frostgrave and stargrave are fantastic systems that would work well with this new game you described. I have always enjoyed blood bowl and Warmaster from GW, but bloodbowl is far more affordable and easier to find players. Finally, OPR systems have been a great way to play with my GW minis without having to spend tons of money on the ever-changing rule books and system updates.

Ohh, I think miniatures agnostic games are trending right now. 1. After a period with loads of board games with miniatures, 2. marketing strategy for selling the miniatures by changing the rules to represent the newest product often is the best rulewise, 3. also a growing offer of STL models 4. and terrain (including prepainted cheap terrain from Archon Studio) "Deth Wizard" - I need to check it out, maybe I will incorporate something interesting from theirs idea : ))

@@TheGlacialGeek well if you've ever wanted to play a game where your models can use terrain as a weapon or even throw your opponents models into stuff then it's the game for you. Igt is very "warhammer" itself. but it is pretty darn good. One of the biggest failures of warhammer (the battle game, not the roleplay one of course) was the lack of a decent skirmish/campaign system. This covers that gap. There's been battlereports? 😢 Last one I see is from month ago and the one behind it four so. Others under the "only fans" umbrella? 😘 But definitely worth looking around. Malifaux might be a bit complicated too, but fun. To play no problem, you'll just get rofl-stomped by veterans or given pity by the bucket and to master it, you need to understand almost every model and their potential synergies with other models... But in casual setting, same experience opponents, tremendious fun, at least to me. Space Station Zero been mentioned. Legacy game, bit wobbly on rule-side when I last played (knife v gun, exactly same but gun ranger, so absolutely no reason given for regular CCWs except "if you want to play flavour") and quite brutal, so the first few scenarios will get familiar real quick, but then you start getting the feeling of true exploration, mapping the path-ways and remembering hazards on the way... Also callously sending team after team to their death... But bit of a dun-n-dusted in the end. SSZ is very short leap to Descent, Gloomhaven and such boardgames that are great "miniature games" as well. But I'd really think you should try Blood Bowl. Not excatly indie anymore, but GW started as such too. No mention of One Page Rules? Haven't checked it out either, 'cose a lot of these "indie rulesets" are really just capitalizing on other people fixing up all the expensive stuff and them getting nickles for basocally nothing. And if it works out, more effort can be put into it and suddenly we are the business. Aaaand if it doesn't get off, like many "only the rules, 'cose we couldn't really bother" don't... Someone wasted an afternoon on computer. Oh, no... 😂 But still, different systems give different views and those give much more legitimacy to your opinions rather than "well, I've played this one thing and it's great. Period."
