Hi everyone! My video about new ways to explore Fibonacci numbers has really taken off recently, so I figured I would dig up a short documentary that I made discussing how I see math and art as intersecting fields, and what it means to be an artist while utilizing a field of study not typically seen as artistic in nature.
I currently have plans for another large scale video project that I hope to show you soon. The topic involves the periodic table and structure of songs. Won't say any more than that for now.

Im not sure how much content you can make from connecting math and art like this, but Im sure many of us would be very thankful for more videos like this and the fibonacci one. Best of luck!

There are so many choices in your artistic process! Starting from the sequences you choose, the type of visualisation, the composition, the tools you use, the colours, the mathematical basis in the first place... There is no room for the doubt „if this is art“. It clearly is! To me it is expression of the connection and beauty of mathematics, structures, aesthetics, understanding, problem solving, and so many more things I love. Your work is awesome! Thanks for sharing it.

very nice..I am turning 60 next year and as a teenage artist and programmer started on the same ideas back in the 80s writing programs to create art from math. Even did ray tracing and particle simulations with the limited computers of the time. The software company i now run is call PhiLight so it has never left me. I guess what i'm saying is you have a audience and there are others that find your work very interesting.

Dude this niche you found is actually so interesting to think about. You've found a way to sort of reverse-engineer nature's code! Seriously, the thought that you can mess with the fibonacci sequence in weird ways and get it to produce cool looking shapes might be a great way for teenagers to intuitively understand how this weird set of numbers is seemingly so integral to life

Your passion about maths is really inspiring. By the way, have you ever done any artwork regarding graph theory, particularly graph colouring?

Cool math art for anyone to play with. Let a, b, c, d, ... be an integer sequence Let a', b', c', d', ... be the least positive residues of this sequence modulo M Consider the coordinates (a',b'), (b',c'), (c',d'), ... Now plot these coordinates. Example, Let a, b, c, d, ... be the Fibonnaci sequence 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, ... and let M be the number 5 Then our coordinates take the form (1,1), (1,2), (2,3), (3,0), (0,3), (3,3), (3,1), (1,4), (4,0), (0,4), (4,4), (4,3), (3,2), (2,0), (0,2), (2,2), (2,4), (4,1), (1,0), (0,1), (1,1), etc. where this pattern repeats indefinitely. Plotting this in a graph yields OOOXO OXOOO OOOOX OOXOO XOOOO More striking is if we remove the left column and bottom row ie the zero coordinates. This reveals some nice rotational symmetry OOXO XOOO OOOX OXOO Again using M=7 instead of M=5 and removing the left column and bottom row yields OOXXXO XXOXXO XXXXOX XOXXXX OXXOXX OXXXOO Again using M = 6 and removing left column and bottom row yields OOOOO OXOXO OOXOO OXOXO OOOOO Some very nice spiral patterns emerge from these plots and its visually striking when plotted on graph paper. Using the Fibonnaci sequence and letting M vary makes for days of fun recreational math. One can also vary the manner of choosing coordinates and of course explore integer sequences besides Finonnaci.

So great! Math so beautiful and diverse. have pages and pages of those type of graphs in all kinds of colors. Iteration is the single most profound tool. That and the inversion of the circle. 👍

I’ve been thinking about Math integration into art too. For me specifically music. Theres math involved but I want to use different concepts. I have Synesthesia so it helps with the visualization involved.

In theory, everything can be art, in practice - art is what a small bunch of critics calls it. Your view doesn’t matter if you don’t have connections to popularize it

Hola. Jeejeje... Igual no continué... Gracias por compartir tu experiencia ❤❤❤.

i play a lot with math, art, animation, etc. But even if i know well some programing language un libraries to help with that, i don't always feel having the tool that i need.. So wich one you use ? And how did you imagine the "best" drawing / scripting programe for this kind of art ? (something between game engine and image editor)

You know, you could think of the visualizations of the sequences as an intrinsic art of mathematics itself. That's the way I usually think of them ... .

I've seen you've done something with cellular automata (?) - maybe this collection of fractals could be interesting for you: www.dropbox.com/sh/ek5cvu7406hy3u4/AAALDhmvuha5q_u5AiCWjhQIa?dl=0 i made it with p5 and it uses cellular automata to generate.
