How do we have the conversation about trans women in women's sports without fully embracing transmedicalism?
@QueerCollectiveАй бұрын
@@qu33n0f9x transness is far more complex than that. Not every trans person subscribes to the gender binary and wants a binary or medicalized transition. But please elaborate on your point.

@@QueerCollective What do we do for trans women that do not (or can't) medically transition to meet hormone level requirements for sports? Aren't we essentially defining what a woman is by setting an arbitrary standard of hormone levels at that point? It's really just moving the goalposts from "you have to have a XX chromosomes" to "you have to have these hormone levels" to be fully considered as a woman.

@@qu33n0f9xthis is genuinely such a great great question! i’ve also had this thought - often when we espouse the rhetoric regarding trans women in sports particularly, it’s addressed as “well with hormones they’re on the same playing field!” while yes there should be some merit there, what happens to the people who can’t take hormones? as their guest said, the issue is and should be intersectional. it feels like there’s a population that’s forgotten about. it really pulls back the curtains on the whole ethos of sporting and what is being prioritized and valued. i don’t have an answer either but i do agree the question should be asked!

I don't know if you're aware, but Google has chosen to honour your video with some very unfortunate automated subtitles. Nearly every time you said her name, it transcribed Imane as "a man", turning your talking points into: "Carine ... refused to shake a man's hand" "Media outlets reported that a man had failed gender test" "A man was born a woman, has passport stating that she is a biological woman," "to provide some context, a man has a long history of competing in this sport" Obviously not what you were going for... hopefully there's a way to fix it.

Is this a re-upload? I swear I watched this one a few weeks ago. Good discussion, either way.

@@QueerCollective Yeah, there's that, plus some deja vu around the line about boxing being the sport of punching people in the head. I might have heard someone say something similar somewhere else.

This conversation was wild. It might be better to have a different perspective in the next podcast though. This just seemed like each speaker was trying to outdo the others to see who could pitch the wildest take.

They didn't answer any questions. A legitimate question was asked (surprisingly), "How do you prevent ppl from just identifying as trans and taking advantage of women?". Her answer basically "No man would do that....blah blah blah....so delusional". She has a lot of faith in humanity, the bar is so low to be "trans" (dress however, no surgery or hormones needed), that a perverted man would absolutely take advantage of the situation. That's the nature of criminals, they don't have morals. You cannot dismiss/demonize ppl's concerns, yet demand ppl take your concerns seriously. Model what you want OR "Do unto others as you would want them to do unto". Everyone, even if you didn't grow up in a religious household, has been taught the "Golden Rule".
