Agree so f*cking hard, I roll my eyes at these weird & arbitrary designations for comic eras based solely on... Whatever the hell this is: "Gold is 1939 to 1961, Silver is 1962 to 1970, Bronze is 1971 to April of 1977, Copper is May of 1977 to June of 1980 & then September of 1980 when Saturn aligned with Neptune & trine with the moon but only in Libra, everything else in between & after that printed before 7:30 AM on a Monday is modern. Unless the Moon was retrograde in Scorpio. Then it's just trash."

@@Matthew.E.Kelly. The comic eras are actually not random. The Golden Age began in 1938 with Action Comics #1 because it marks the beginning of superhero comics. The Silver Age began in 1956 with Showcase #4 because it marks the return of the immense popularity of superhero comics after a decade of Sci-Fi, Western, Horror and Romance comics being all the rage. Although some say the Silver Age started in 1954 because that year saw the adoption of the Comics Code. The Bronze Age began in 1970 with Green Lantern #76, since it marks the beginning of socially conscious superhero comics. It is also around this time that comic creators started ignoring the provisions of the Code. I agree with you though that after that, the limits between the periods get way more subjective, although in my opinion the Copper Age started in 1984 with TMNT #1 because it marks the rise/explosion of independently-published comics. As for the modern age, my way of looking at it is that it started in 1990 with the release of Spider-Man #1 which marks the beginning of using variant covers to sell millions of copies of the same book. And I would say the current age which doesn't have a specific name started around the year 2000 with the foundation of CGC. From that point on everything was different, as comics released after that point are often graded right when they come out so they will be much less rare than their counterparts in 9.6/9.8 condition in the future.

There are so many tools to assist collector's now that it definitely makes it harder to hit the home run. When ASM 300 came out we knew it was a special book, but still only bought two copies because "special" back then meant it may climb up to $50. It it sat at $50 for many many years (decade?) Now it seems more likely to speculate and grab batches of 10 just-in-case one of them hits. I'm guilty of it, as are many many others reading this. Doesn't mean they still can't be any (SiKtC for example) but definitely less likely. It takes a low print run + home-run-series at just the right timing with the amount of people spec-collecting these days.

Definitely gave a lot more insight into this topic that was very much needed I feel like there are a lot of people not wanting to pick up new books because they feel like it won’t be worth it but me I’m in it for the collecting part and if I end up being able to sell the book for a lot of money then hey I’m not complaining.

Appreciate your videos. I’ve recently made some bad investments in modern age books and was getting a bit disappointed. However I need to decide which ones I bought as collectibles, just get out of the poor investments and do my research a bit better before buying more.

This was a great video Bry. I just subscribed to GPAnalysis and your video was very informative in helping me to maximize the information that is in it. I have heard many of the more seasoned comic book dealers constantly talking down on modern comics and I always wonder how they got their start in dealing in comic books. Much like you I have gotten my start in selling comics by first selling modern comics as they are more affordable and attainable to most of us when we are just starting out. Along the way I have been slowly making my way into Bronze age books with the proceeds from my sales and now even some Silver age books. Of course there is more risk involved in investing in modern comics but much like with any other investment as long as you diversify you lower your overall risk and you are better able to absorb a loss.

Been a collector for years and yes modern in raw as well as slabbed books depending on what you get, it's demand, first appearances and run can be collectables as well as hot demand items. Modern books if you get the right one can be a diamond in the rough. Great video. Take care.

Great stuff bro! I love to collect ratio variants as well as limited print runs (50-3,000). I’ve seen so many of them increase like crazy in value. It’s the old supply and demand at work there. Also, it’s always interesting when I come across a cool book from my LCS that seems to be scarce to find for sale online. A recent pick up that comes to mind is my Planet of the Apes Annual #1 1:15 Zira photo variant released by Boom Studios in 2012. It might not be highly printed or even in high demand, but it’s a PC book for me, so no biggie!

I agree that modern comics can be great investments, but when it comes to the high ratio variants, how can you tell which variants might take off? There are variants for nearly EVERY issue these days...

I always look at the incentive covers of new books I'm interested in. How I decide which ones I buy is simple. If it's a potential key and I know it's gonna be a high print I look at the ratio covers ,who are the artists and most importantly what do they look like. Say the book is a first appearance and only one cover has the new character and it's a ratio, that's the one to get. If they all have the new character then it's the artist and simply which one I like the best. Basically if it's a potential key and there's an incentive cover I want it, it's just witch one can I afford. No matter what it will be a good investment. The high ratios are not always the more valuable. The best advice I can give is just go with what you like. I'm a fan of the current Moon Knight run and I automatically have to get every ratio if there's one even tho it might not be a good investment.

To me modern books artwork are amazing and as a whole much better then older books art because of the digital graphic capabilities we have now. I love slabbing a book with an awesome cover art. Where as older books are slabbed more for preservation than art IMO.

So it would be mere speculation and not investing on my part to try and figure out what would be a good comic book to purchase now. I just buy what I like. Unfortunately I don’t have the money to buy the early ASMs that I enjoyed in my childhood (many many years ago).

Good analysis. The big difference between modern and golden age is longevity. With a golden age we know certain characters will continue to be popular. Modern age we don't know whether the series will get cancelled or the character will have legs.

I havent started collecting yet, i mean i got an old collection from childhood but i havent collected anything modern. Ive been shopping though, and ive become a fan of Peach Momoko, so i'll probably snatch any variant she makes. She did an amazing variant for The Last Ronin #1, i really want that. The artwork on ultra modern stuff is what really attracts me. I also really like some of Pat Gleason variants for Spiderman, artwork is different and very clean.

I picked up comics again around 2014. Go to the CS every Tuesday. I mainly collect DC and Marvel. I've only been impressed by Scott Snyder's Batman run and some limited series from Marvel like Blade vs Wolverine and Predator vs Wolverine. All the other runs and stories had no growth or stakes involved and if they did it was all reverted to prior states after the said story or event was resolved. People want to see character growth and they want real stakes or at least the perception of stakes that don't revert after the event is over.

Seems like instead of having largely traditional appearance type keys now we have ratio quality cover type keys. I think that makes the modern books more subjective. Cool perspective though! Thanks for the information, much appreciated!

Everyone collects something, comics is my thing but a while back I was hyped into designer toys. The peak was great but man the drop was crazy. $400 collectibles going for $30 if you’re lucky enough to find a buyer. But that niche is always where the people who really loves these collectibles are.

I was a collector of early Robert Kirkman comics, finding in particular his "Battle Pope" series. He liked (may still like) to visit the LCS I visited, and he'd sign everything, so while the signed comics I've bought were not "officially" signed (or guaranteed or whatever), I think the various Kirkman comics may one day be worth something if only because the stories and art are so good. So that's what I think of when I hear "Modern Comics". Also I have Amazing Spider-Man featuring Stephen Colbert, and an Angel (the TV show) comic with Angel Muppet on the cover. Throw in a lot of Alex Ross covers, too (I like his Krypto cover!). Fun! 😊

I liken modern comics to day trading and bronze/silver age comics to ETF's/Index funds like Vanguard or S&P 500. It might be sexy to hit the one modern at its peak, I'd rather bank on steady silver/bronze X-men and Spiderman comics.

I think a lot comics are tricky right now. There is too much fluctuation. A lot of the secondary characters are the risky bets, whereas the main characters are more of a safe bet. I think Miles first appearance was the safest bet, but even now with as high as it's going, it's getting in that area where it might not be able to sustain, but we will have to see. I still think silver and early bronze books are the safer books in terms of holding their value, then later bronze and copper keys, followed by modern. We shall see how many of the modern books are seen as grails in the next 20 years, but right now I don't think there are many. There are a lot of books being chased (and a lot of variants, which I think bulks up the numbers), but how many of them are going to retain value 20 years from now and be seen as keys, grails and what have you. Some of the bronze and copper age books that were seen as dollar or cheap books for years are now being seen different, so it may take awhile.

I used to think yes because of the limited print run but I’m beginning to think that generally no they aren’t worth buying unless I love the art for the PC. So half my collection is 80/90s and the other half is 2006-2016. And I’m in the process of sort thru keys and specs books. What is the current value of all the Thor #1 (2014 Jane foster) variants? I have them all minus Ross sketch. Also, ASM #4 (silk variant), and Edge of Spider-verse #2 (land variant 1st spidergwen)? I’ve currently got them in CGC with 9.6/9.8 prescreen. The eBay prices seem ridiculous!! Like is Edge of Spiderverse 2 (lane variant) really $10,000 in a 9.8?!?!?

I would side with caution the demand might make it harder to sell. It’s not like newsstand jewelers or direct where’s same cover. Generally people want cover a unless has special significance. With fallout if got 4 I’d have too grab the others as true collector.

For me the price on that variant of UF 4 is crazy. For exactly 40 800 at that same auction, you could've bought a Hulk 181 9.6 and a Batman 181 9.2
