Because we don't want to become a full blown extremist country like Pakistan is today. Pakistan is paying the price for that - TLP and Lal Masjid being the prime examples. Our nation has always withheld it's democratic values, has existed for a very long time (relatively in peace). We must make sure it always does. Hindus, Jains, Buddhists, Sikhs, Zoroastrians, Christians, Jews and Muslims live together in our country. Serve side by side. Our secular values have taught us to live in harmony.
