A very detailed video. As an Indian, I think this case study should be taught in India as well so that we also understand why religious radicalism is bad. Hero worshipping in politics always leads to decline. It is true that a lot of damage was already done by Pakistani elites who controlled everything in case of Bangladesh. A friend of mine is one of the best kabab food item makers in Dhaka. His father was a Pakistani citizen and came to Bangladesh just after independence. My friend always say that if that times government would have been peace loving, we could have gotten so many good things from both of these countries. I feel that Bangladesh and Pakistan can still be good friends. No Bangladeshi hate Pakistani people. And we always welcome tourists from Pakistan to visit our country and share friendship bonds.

To understand what led to Bangladesh and other secessionist movements in Pakistan you have to read the 1940 Lahore resolution for formation of Pakistan which described Pakistan as "the areas in which the Muslims are numerically in a majority as in the North Western and Eastern Zones of (British) India should be grouped to constitute ‘independent states’ in which the constituent units should be autonomous and sovereign." This describes Pakistan as a federation of autonomous states and not one nation state. It was not the common man in East Pakistan but the intellectuals particularly the economists who were responsible for demand of greater autonomy to East Pakistan. A Harvard educated Bengali economist had predicted the breakup of Pakistan to Gen Ayub Khan in 1960. These facts are missing from the popular narrative wrt 1971 both in India and Pakistan.

The economist that you mention is Anisur Rahman. He and some fellow economists from East Pakistan advocated redistribution of resources from West to East Pakistan. When this was turned down in spite of being completely logical he is quoted to have said "West Pakistanis would rather hand over real political power to the Chinese than give it to the Bengalis"

Bacha khan was also known as frontier Gandhi because of his closeness to Gandhi. He fought for our independence and was against formation of Pakistan. Somehow he knew about Pakistani Muslim military attitude and told congress leaders that they have thrown us to the wolves. He was not a rebel but his fears did come true, sadly. Pakistanis are not told about so many freedom fighters but that’s because they are appointed by British/Americans, raised on their funds, devouring citizens of any resources.
