Came to the Internet to research this, and am so grateful to you for all you have figured out and the work you went to! Thank you thank you! I brought my herb plants in from the garden in the fall so that I could overwinter them, hopefully, inside. But, I have fungus gnats in some house plants and used bits on my herbs to control the bugs. Was left wondering if I had just done a dumb thing, rendering my herbs inedible. I didn’t think I would find any info on the net, and was beyond grateful to find your video! You’ve helped a lot of people… Thank you!

I really appreciate the amount of work that went into this video. Well done, Nicole! I was getting ready to treat some of my indoor plants with Mosquito bits, so I thought I would see what I could find on youtube. Your video popped up, and I'm glad that I watched it. I really don't have much time to watch many videos, so for that reason, I don't subscribe to many channels. I just subscribed to yours though. Thanks again for the great video.

This exact topic has been bothering me. I use mosquito bits for houseplants, but I recently started growing herbs outdoors. I don't even want to use sticky traps out there for fear that I'll accidentally trap a beneficial insect, so I've been torn about how to deal with it. Thanks for sharing this. I feel slightly better about inevitably having to use Mosquito Bits on my herb plants.

This is the BEST information I've found on BTI mosquito bits. Thank you so much. I've done some research as well, and never thought to just contact the company, because at the end of the day I wasn't sure how to properly use the bits for fungus gnat control. Just sprinkling some on top of the soil before watering, and doing so every 3 weeks didn't seem to work super well. I ended up literally covering the top soil of my plants with this stuff and leaving it there for a couple weeks and it's done a great job in obliterating them over the course of a few weeks. Seems my approach might have been overkill but my plants are all completely happy lol

This is a great company and I think they could save the world if we let them. lol I do the soaking method and apply weekly then bi-weekly after for my flowers. However I'm wanting to plant some radishes for the first time ever gardening veggies so although I know MB's are completely safe, I still had to double check. The fungus gnats were driving me crazy, but I wasn’t sure if Mosquito Bits were safe for my kumquat tree. In frustration, I used a hydrogen peroxide and water mix with a sprinkle of cinnamon on top. I bought it a few years ago and didn’t use it for the same reason as you, I actually find it rather hilarious we all reacted to this product the same way. It actually is the only thing besides the shredded glass mix that works. I think people always recommend DE because they have heard others say it, even though it’s completely worthless for gnats

Spot on! I have watched so many videos and read many articles regarding fungus gnats and BTI over the last couple of years and your information is exactly what I have found. The letter from the company is the cherry on the top, thank you for sharing. In recent years I have been fascinated with Bokashi composting and Korean natural farming. I have learned much about the subject and have been harvesting the Lactobacillus bacteria from rice water and inoculating a substrate with it for use in my bins. I am now wondering if it is possible, having just bought a large bag of Mosquito Bits, if it is possible to culture and grow the BTI in the product and make an indefinite supply.

I would try letting them soak in the water and then watering with the BTI water. Seems to be more effective than placing the bits on the soil. I would also recommend putting a few sticky traps around the plants to catch some of the adults.

That's interesting! I just read a post from back in 2013 in a forum where everyone was wondering the same thing as you. The question to the very same company was why all the warning labels for the bits and what was the difference between their mosquito dunks vs. mosquito bits? The company's email response was that the "dunks" were approved for organic agriculture production and the "bits" were not. Some of the posters said because of this difference in the product they just broke up the dunks and used them instead for food production. So I wonder, what changed in the formula since then?

Just a quick question, if you happen to have researched this question. Why throw out / discard the bits after removing them from the water. When using the bits to treat ponds for mosquitos the granules dissolve over time. So why discard them? Why can’t they be reused?

This video was very explanatory and to the point ! Thank you! Some recommend using warm water to dissolve the bits. Do you think warm water may harm BTI and thus reduce the effectiveness of Mosquito Bits?
@NicolesCorner
@NicolesCorner 8 ай бұрын
I’m glad it was helpful! I think the warm water just makes the BTI come off the pellets and dissolve into the water, thus making it more effective to water the plants with it. But you do have a point: boiling water could potentially harm the BTI. So perhaps warm and not boiling is your best bet.
