Before the world switched to phones and iPods, the most portable way to listen to music was with a cassette tape - and now they could be making a comeback! Sales nearly doubled in 2021 from 173,000 to 343,000, with 215,000 already sold in 2022 so far.
Hollywood trailblazer Issa Rae sat down with TODAY.com to discuss her next chapter “The Mogul Era” as our first digital cover star. Read the full story here: www.today.com/...

I have a 1977 Quadraflex PCD 388 and with a nicely recorded tape it's awesome! It's probably one of the higher end decks that were sold at pacific stereo back in the late 70's. Nowadays it's hard to find a proper new deck that weights 12 pounds! Also and actual metal all around construction.

My Sony boombox from 2020 makes really good recordings onto cassette from Spotify. I listen to them on my Walkman and in the car. Can’t tell much of a difference. As long as you have something decent I think it’s fine. It isn’t necessary to have a high end stereo system or cassette deck to get decent quality sound and performance.

I like to make cassettes from CDs. When I made them from vinyl, the music search wouldn't work because of the noise. It stood out like a sore thumb. That's probably why I go for CDs. That's besides the wider dynamic range and the 44.1 whatever.

Cassette tapes were the best technology, that were ever made and invented. As it just it doesn’t jump or skip, when you walk or jog or run. Unlike cds players and types I think it scratch or damage easily, unlike cds or vinyls as types doesn’t need too much protection. Unlike cds or vinyls does. 😊

Cassettes are the sound of the 80s to me. Many songs I grew up with are etched in my mind with that particular tape sound. Listen to a song on the internet or CD and then listen to the same song on cassette. They have a 'sound', more presence, more intimate and atmospheric and yet more punchy somehow too. I'd love to release my stuff on cassette some day.

Cassettes had 3 things going for them that we had to wait until the digital era to have again. They were dirt cheap. They were portable. And one of the biggest things and you've touched upon it is recording whatever you wanted. The 20th century equivelant of downloading music. Some.of the comeback is nostalgia and then novelty for you ger people. But to be honest some of it just makes sense. Even in the digital era tapes would be cheaper than usb sticks and SD cards.

Nobody thinks that people are gonna ditch Spotify and start listening on maxwells, but for young people like myself these are cool things to experiment with. Aswell they’re cheap, it’s nice to have you’re music on a physical format so I was between CDs and Viynl. CDs are nothing special and are digital just like Spotify and they’re boring, viynl is very delicate and very expensive and I can’t record onto it. Tape is a special format, it’s analog, can be recorded on and is far cheaper than viynl
@Ruinwyn
@Ruinwyn Жыл бұрын
@Gort yep, people still like to actually own their music and buy albums, and cassettes are perfectly suited for that. Even basic Type I can sound better than free Spotify. They are compact, portable and robust enough for teenage handling. Tapes have low level of standard hiss, but brains clean it out easily. There is an appeal in analogue sound. Vinyls might reach higher sound quality at the top end, but cassettes can give better bang for buck. You need to spend a lot more in equipment for Vinyls to get to the level of basic vintage sony walkman. People remember the radio recordings on cheap boomboxes to cheap tape or the copies of copies they got from friends. We don't judge digital music based on the cellphone concert recordings, we shouldn't judge cassettes based on careless teenage recordings either.
