Are My Hands Too Big Or Too Small To Play Guitar?

Have you ever thought to yourself as a guitarist, "I wish my hands were just... different"? Well, you're not alone. When it comes to playing the guitar, it seems like having the perfect hand size would make a world of difference, right?
The truth is, that the guitar is designed with every hand size in mind. But there are some trade-offs. If you have big hands, it might be easier to make bar chords but harder to play single notes. Whereas for someone with small hands the opposite may be true.

@@alexioschaffan I’m not trying to brag in any way, but I can confirm that Long ass fingers are so handy for playing guitar (no pun intended) on some riffs my guitar teacher will need to use his index and pinky finger, but I just use my index and ring finger. But keep in mind my fingers are super skinny

I’m always struggling with D Major. My hands are huge and have been broken every which way but lose. When I try to spread the gap my arthritic hand causes all my previous broken fingers to point in the same spot instead of actually spreading out.

My biggest issue is muting the strings. My fingers just don’t seem to want to bend correctly and one of my fingers always touches more than 1 string and mutes the one below. It’s infuriating and doesn’t get resolved no matter how hard I try.

@@flyguyty33 A wider neck? so you need to reach even further to get to the lower strings? One problem created another. That wont help. I'm pretty sure.
@flyguyty33

@@ZTRCTGuy yes, wider string spacing more specifically. Some peoples fingertips are larger and that is the only solution, while others just learned improperly hand and finger positions, in which both are easily fixed with wider string spacing. I’ve seen different people discuss this and is 💯 a fix for this issue. And the reach you’re talking about on lower strings isn’t an issue at all for me so I can’t relate to that. Though maybe for some who already have that issue, it may make it worse but I would assume only because they have small hands, which would more than likely suggest smaller fingertips. I’m sure there are many out there with short, fat hands and fingers though, so what you said may be an issue for them.

I have a wide palm but short fingers, so I easily gave up learning when I had troublesome encounters with bars and B's when I was younger. I tried again years after and I just decided to grind and enjoy the pain. Its definitely a harder path compared to others but you'll still get there.

SRV had huge hands and we know he could play. That being said, I started learning on a Yamaha Acoustic guitar. The strings are very close together and there was literally no way for me to fret one single inner string without touching an adjacent string. There was literally no way to stop this. I switched to a Telecaster and the spacing is much better for me and solved my problem.

My father gave me a Dana Bourgeois OM Signature guitar a few weeks ago. I am an amateur fiddle and mandolin player! I have been using your beginner videos to get me started. This guitar is small in the opinion of my guitar playing friends but to me it is ENORMOUS compared to a mandolin. I have large hands for a female but for some reason was cursed with relatively short pinkies and now crooked fingertips due to arthritis. This arthritis is also in the base of my thumbs which makes stretching to form the guitar chords painful at times. I am up for the challenge regardless of those issues. The most challenging part of this for me is a completely different finger board to learn. Thanks for making these videos. You are a great teacher.

(I gave you two thumbs up but not sure you can see my short fat thumbs.) I am 58 Years old and I just started taking lessons three weeks ago. Yes, I feel like I'm going to learn T-ball at the stadium where MLB is played. It is a life long dream and now is the time, now or never. I have short fat hands, fingers and palms, but this won't deter me. I will do this. Again, thanks for the video, your time and information. I look forward to watching other videos you may have.

I have a Luna acoustic electric. I love it because it is a parlour sized guitar. It has a smaller body and seems to fit me well. I feel I have better control over it. I'm still working on stretching and and strengthening my hand but I've found the neck of my Luna lends really well to my smaller Willie Nelson sized hands. (serious when I say Willie Nelson and I have the same exact sized and shaped hands haha) My belief that my small hands would make it impossible for me to play guitar held me back from trying for so many years. But this confirms what others have told me. I think it's about getting the right guitar for your size and shape and comfort (sounds like a condom) and continuing to practice and not put it down. Thanks for the video

Though what I'm saying is anecdotal, I'd like to share my experience with hand-size and guitar playing: I have delicate doll-like hands with tiny fingertips. My fingers are long enough, but I felt the tips were too small and dainty to finger the fretboard properly. It didn't help matters that guitar-playing is male-dominated and most of the people I see on this site have thicker fingers than me. What I've learned so far is that if you are dedicated enough to learn your craft, you will find a way to compensate. I compensate by adjusting how I place my fingers on the fretboard when forming certain chords. Generally, I try to use the very tip of my finger, as you stated, but for certain chords, I may have to tweak my adjustments so the fatter part of my finger is also in contact with the board and strings (but without accidentally muting the other strings). I do this so that I have more surface area on the string(s). Though it may be very frustrating and you may feel like you aren't making improvements, keep up with it! You will improve! I've recently picked up an acoustic guitar and it is hella gnarly on my dolly hands, but I remember that it's something that needs practice just like when I initially picked up the electric guitar! Don't "fret" over it. Practice! :P (Sorry about the pun, but I had to)

Nate, I have large hands and a very wide tip to my second finger. I have real trouble with some chords, but if there is a barre alternative I find it way easier to play. Even with a guitar with a wider nut and fretboard the top four frets are a real pain to negotiate and I usually make a chord up or play the notes to get me by. I have a PRS copy, a Yamaha RG121 and a Tanglewood LP copy, some have narrower nuts but the PRS is the easiest to play, neck profile I guess. The Yam' is next easiest as the action is lower. I have tried to use a capo on fret 3 which solves some problems but challenges my ears as chords are not where they should be and I have to hunt the root notes down across the board, makes for a fun evening! String spacing to me is everything, I may need to revisit the guitar shop!!!!!

I have big hands, would actually prefer a 2" nut width but I've had to get by on the regular widths. I think it's easier with smaller hands regards dexterity and chording but bigger stronger hands can handle heavier gauges and vibrato with these thicker wires. Think srv with his 13 guage. Randy Rhoads would not play a note on that set.

Your video lessons are very helpful. I'm only 4'11 and scructerly petite I was always discouraged when it came to playing guitar though I always wanted to, because my hands are so small. I think maybe if I can ever afford it I'll try a 3/4 size guitar. I tried the ukulele but I just don't like the sound of it. I got a guitulele and put some classical guitar strings on it and tuned it like a standard guitar, which is easier for me to play, but I still really wish I could play an actual guitar. Hopefully with practice it will become easier. Thanks for these awesome tutorials. I started watching a few to learn scales and even with just that knowledge I already feel more comfortable playing the instrument!

I'm a 5'9" male in my 20s. My girlfriend is 5'1". I have the same exact hand size and finger length as her, but my fingers are fatter. It's hard for me to stay motivated when I look up the tabs for some songs I want to play and they require these long stretchy suspended chords. The only way I can even get those chords to ring out is by slowly stretching my fingers out once one of my fingers is fretted down and forms the first part. I have no idea how I can ever switch between chords like that quickly. One thing that has helped me not give up is just playing 2-3 notes of chords. Full chords aren't always needed and as long as you hit the root and 3rd, the key parts of the chord are being played.

The funny thing is when im practicing with my band they always say that my fingers look like a spider scurrying across the fret board. Right now I'm still a teenager and haven't even stopped growing yet , so who knows what's to come?

The guy that taught me guitar many years ago had bought all his guitars in the '70's, A CBS strat ,Gibson explorer and SG .The necks on these guitars were baseball bats and next to impossible for me to play. so I stuck with Fender C shaped necks and '60's style Gibson slim taper necks. Also ,along the way, I found that bar chords were far easier pulled off with a 7.25" radius board, .The flatter the board ,the harder it has been for me, but all in all, between the type of neck and compensating technics, I,ve been a very competent player

Sometime during the first year of guitar study I was ready to give up. I owned an electric and an acoustic, and neither seemed to fit my small-medium sized hands nor cater to my lack of hand strength. As a last resort I bought a new Fender Mustang Modern Player, and I have to say, even after three more guitar purchases the Mustang is the most comfortable and ergonomic of all my guitars. The short-scale, small body and thicker neck all contribute to it being such a playable instrument. And yes, the nut width is fairly narrow, too. It's a real keeper!

I think a Mustang can work for a larger person, too. The Modern Player is heavy (!) and a bigger person might appreciate the heft. The neck of a Modern Player is nothing like the customary Slim-D and modern-C narrow width necks and will probably work well for a larger-handed player. The extra girth makes it just such a "right" feeling neck.

Do you play on your fingertips? Not pads? That is key. I have the opposite issue as you as I have very small hands with very narrow fingers. But whatever your hand size, the right technique is extremely important.

Hey, Nice video. I'm currently selling my telecaster 52 AVRI because a keep having to squeeze my fingers all together in order to make chords. I have a 9 1/4 inch hand from thumb to to my little fingers. Speaking of fingers, my tips are shaped like sausage ones. the tip of my index measures at least 1cm. I have been struggling with learning the guitar for ages and in the last couple of years going as far as to practicing for 30min a day at last. I've tried private tutors as well. My question is: should I get wide and fatter (Always favoured them to skinnier ones) neck with a wider spacing? Or should I just thoughten up and keep trying? Thx anyway

It might make it slightly easier to get a guitar with a wider fretboard but you can do it on the guitar that you currently have. I'd go to a music store do some hardcore comparison.

Nate, my distal phalanx (the meaty part of my Finger just below the tips) stick out a lot. So when I’m trying to play notes I can put the tips of my finger on strings but my distals will end up muting or disrupt the strings below them. Makes it hard when I’m trying to play certain types of songs. Any advice ?

I'd try getting the guitar up higher with a strap or footstool and then try using some of the alternate chord shapes. You will have to be really aware of your technique and tweak it as you notice things going wrong or right.

I will say I have average hands, but I broke both of them at different times so my pinkies geometry is off on both hands. Just have to compensate on pinky stretches. But I’ve noticed they are becoming more dextarious as I go.

I feel ya...I cut the end of my left pinky off years ago and the ass of a surgeon sewed it back on pointing toward my ring finger. I lost about a 1/4" of stretch on the important hand but over the years have been able to compensate

I bought a guitar with a 48mm nut width. Still feels kind of narrow for me. I might need to send it back and get a 52mm. But try finding an electric guitar with a 52mm nut width. I have heard of people taking a 7 string guitar (48mm nut width) and converting it into a wide nut 6 string.

Yeah I’m pretty gutted because I just bought this really awesome fender guitar as my first acoustic and literally no matter what I do if I’m trying to play right up at the nut my fingers can never not touch more than one string I don’t think any amount of practice will fix that for me my fingers need to be coming from a complete right angle to the neck to only touch one string which is very hard to do when you’re trying to play at even average speed

Such a shame as well because I’m in love with the guitar it’s just borderline impossible to play anything other than strumming and even then I can only do it from like a third of the way down the neck onwards

Nate, what about my hand. My middle finger is much longer than my other fingers and when I try to make barre cords my hand gets tilted way over to one side because of my middle finger. How do I handle this situation.
@ranbummerz729
@ranbummerz729 6 жыл бұрын
My index finger and my middle finger have about half an inch difference in length. I don't know if it's "correct", but what I do is tilt my middle finger so that you are touching the string at an angle to make up for the length difference.

Hey nate when i am changing chords rapidly like from g to f in a song like talking to myself my fingers themselves are muting the note to be played. This also happens when i play the bar chords in some heavy songs . Is there any advice you cam give?? Plz ....!!!
@MusoraMedia
@MusoraMedia 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Aditya, If you can't go right to the chords you are trying to change between on their own first before trying to transition between chords then you are making things hard on yourself. Practice going to the individual chords until you can go to the very quickly first before trying to switch between them. Once you can do that just work on switching between 2 chords only if you can do that quickly, add in another chord in the progression. Chunking things up and dividing the challenge like this may seem like it takes longer but it will build the skills you need to play all kinds of things.

That's just because you need more practice... The things you described are from lack of skill... Keep at it and it will happen for you. When i started i had a hard time doing a 1 to 3 finger stretch lmao.. Now i can do them with my first and second finger and my fingers didn't grow... Just keep practicing... It's all about hand position

I'm wondering the same thing. I wear medium sized gloves. Let me know what works for you. I currently have a Yamaha FG-Junior JR-1 that I used when I was a kid and hated it. I am 23 years old now and want to get back into it. However, I am not sure what size guitar is appropriate for me. I know it has to be bigger than the one I have now, but I am not sure by how much.

All of the musicians he mentioned with "small hands" (or at all for that matter) were men. I'm sure my hands are much smaller then all of those guys. But the video of the kids was inspiring! If they can do it I've got no excuse! I just need to practice more but bar chords are soooooo harddddd :p

Kalina Hertafeld Same here! While looking for tips I found so many men complaining about small hands, even when theirs were still huge compared to mine. stevie vai has big hands but his teacher joe satriani has smaller hands both extremely awesome guitarists...its all about dexterity like i got short fingers larger palms but my fingers can stretch crazy wide without discomfort..and they work independently of each other....its all about getting a guitar that fits you and just play very few rifts need massive rubber stretches to hit...and in all respects the guitar is so versatile that if you have to hit a ord that exceeds your fingers there is a much easier way to play the same cord...hand size is irrelevant crap I've owned a jem guitar and found its neck to thin for m taste and stevie has bigger hands than i do i preferred the rg 550 profile for my palms..

Ok, some reality here: 1. Height has little to do with hand size. Yes, taller folks may tend to have longer fingers, but most of the “shorter guys” you cite actually have decent sized hands. I’m 6’2” with small hands, too. 😂 Prince was short, but had long fingers. 2. Longer fingers and bigger overall hands are a HUGE advantage. It’s just physical reality. There are lots of chords and fingerings I just can’t reach, my leverage is dramatically less, and there are some times where I am forced to mute strings due to lesser finger clearance (e.g., the high-E on a C chord on some frets). With the exception of Angus (and I’m not sure his hands are quite as small as advertised) and maybe Danny Gatton (thick shortish fingers), pretty much all good pro guitarists in rock, country, and folk have at least medium hands, and nearly all greats have very long fingers (Hendrix, Molly Tuttle, SRV, Robert Johnson, Bob Weir, the list goes on). And Angus is mostly a lead player; he had Malcolm playing rhythm. 3. All is not, however, lost. Thin necks, low action, small gauge strings, shorter scale, certain brands (yes to Taylor), and even the smaller guitars can help. But the big thing is to regard the guitar as simply a palette for your expression-you paint with the colors you have. I’m never going to make certain stretches, play Robert Johnson songs, or be able to fret certain chords, but I’ve played on commercial radio, played hundreds of band and solo shows, and recorded three records. Total blast. Just worked with what I had. Hard. (And yes, I had to hold my Les Paul way high, looks real dumb in a punk band 😂). But yeah, small hands are a big challenge on guitar. Anyone who tells you anything else has never played or has big hands. 😂
