I've been a lifelong gardener and 10 years ago I moved into a semi-rural area. I got to know several commercial vegetable farmers (a couple of whom grow "organically") quite well and I constantly ask them questions about their methods. What an informative experience this has been! My approach to my home garden has totally changed. One of my best lessons came from a lady who has been growing veggies for more than 30 years. When I asked her about a particular piece of gardening advice I saw on the internet (I can't remember the topic), she sighed (possibly a sign that she was getting tired of all my weird questions) and said: Think of it this way: we are a business and if there is some way we can increase our production by even 2 or 3 percent and do so with cost-savings, we would jump at the opportunity. On my scale, that is a big number. On your scale, with the relatively few plants you are growing, it's almost nothing.

@@priayief that's not the point. I don't know about the others, but I personally want to know what's the best way to grow a plant. I mean I don't even have any vegetable plants, I mostly have flowering ones but I want to know what's the best soil, what to add to it etc. to make it grow the fastest and flower a lot. For home gardeners, it's usually just a hobby and we want to have some fun with it.

I hesitantly purchased some endo mycorizal fungi.after watching your video I dug deeper into what strains were in product. Found out there is 9 different strains being used. The only one they referred to as being "the best one" was the glomus intraradices. I ordered in December because of the heat issues with this fungi. I contacted "the smiling gardener" where I purchased product from to get his take on heat tolerance. He assured me spores could handle temps as high as 130 degrees and sub zero temps. Also said best to keep at room temperature. Well I'm going with the soil scientist on this one for sure! Just hoping to actually have dormant spores in there. I found out about this fungi spring of 2020 and purchased some from Amazon. Inoculted my tomatoes with powder at transplanting time. Have had a hard time with tomatoes for last several years. Blight was destroying them every year. It was getting worse and worse. I ended up putting them in separate garden bed where I could use drip irrigation and never get leaves wet unless it rained. I didnt do a control group but I had the best by far tomato crop ever. Absolutely no disease, no blemishes, loads of perfect one pound better boys and stayed healthy 6 foot plants till end of September. I'm in zone 4. Stopped watering completely in july. I am a believer in this way of gardening. No more fungusides, pesticides or chemical fertilizers again!

In the fall I grow out endo-myco "plugs" for my new garden areas by using native endo-myco from an undisturbed perennial area (spade down to get a bit of soil, plant roots & duff/humus) chop it up & put it in forrows to grow out a winter kill mixed cover crop. In the spring I spade up covercrop plugs with a sharp narrow spade & "plant" them in new garden prepared area next to seedlings or direct sown crops. I don't think I lose much to heat since this is all done in the cooler fall & spring. I may start using double buckets or trays with ice in the bottoms. Yikes!

Even In an old growth Forrest, fungi will dominate at times and be almost wiped out at others, not so sure heat outright kills all spores, if that was the case, it wouldn’t have survived this world, many old growth conifer forests get plenty hot. And when things cool down, the fungi dominate yet again, year after year, and have been doing so longer than anyone alive.

I have read that the best place to get MR fungi is from the soil underneath healthy plants in our own gardens. Here in Zone9a, it’s recommended to get a handful of oak leaf mold under our oak trees and mix into other places in the garden. It might work for pots, but recently it was 111degreesF here, so those are deceased. RIP

I found your channel last night while trying to gather the best info on Fungus Gnats. Again. I’m tired of trying things that don’t work. 🥺 Anyway, I’ve only had time to watch a few of your videos but I must say YOU ARE AMAZING! 👏 I love how you are delivering your videos with science FACTS. Your channel is exactly what I’ve been looking for for sooooo long! ❤️ You are a funny, down-to-earth, no nonsense woman! I think you are amazingly smart. I appreciate your thoroughness and honesty in these videos soooo much! THANK YOU! I once, about five or six years ago, read an article and I believe it was about this...or something related to it, anyway. It went over how fertilizers and pesticides, etc have “killed” our soil, etc. The article stated that the best way to get your gardens to grow well is to go into an old abandoned farm field and dig down a a few feet and dig up some of that soil. It told step by step how to “grow” the fungi/bacteria(?) by adding molasses or something to it to “feed” it and make more of it. I can’t really remember but it was FASCINATING! Have you heard of this? Anyway, I’m wondering if this might be the only way to really know if it is viable is to make/produce it yourself...? Side note...my 8 year old daughter helped me plant Impatiens in five huge pots next to my house last spring. I added mycorrhizae to each hole with each seedling. Halfway through we changed it up and she planted a pot while I ran into the bathroom. Then she watered it. We realized when I returned that she forgot to put in the mycorrhizae. She felt bad and I assured her it was ok and skipped it. That pot grew about 10% as well as the other four pots. The difference was quite astounding! I believe that fungi was still alive. Lol Thank you for these great videos! 😁

Wow that’s an amazing compliment thank you so much I’m very humbled by it. And yea actually that would work, you wouldn’t even really need to go into an abandoned farm yard/I wouldn’t a common way for preserving wooden buildings/keeping weeds down in rural areas was actually dumping used oil in those areas. But a ditch off a gravel round would definitely be a great place to start. Any form of sugar would feed the little buggers. It would definitely be a way to get microbes designed for your temperatures! That’s a hilarious story! I believe it though all the field testing I’ve done was pretty remarkable. We even ran blind trials where someone else selected the positioning of the control vs treated so we had no bias to any and everytime to treated won out.

I've bought Promix a number of times (kept indoors at a local grocery store) and used it in my house plants. I've noticed a few times I've had the fruiting bodies come up in my philodendrons, leading me to believe that it did survive and thrive and take up properly. That being said, I've probably seen it only 4 times in 50+ plants and repottings using the soil. Interesting though and good to know, I'll have to keep that in mind moving forward for sure.

Realistically, for anyone to make an informed decision, they would need to know exactly how much benefit that they could get from using such a fungi (e.g. it will make their yield x% higher or whatever). If you are going to say heat kills it, you really should provide the science & state what minimum temp & exposure time kills the fungi.

Thank you for the information and for the sincerity :). One question. I've worked briefly with mycorrhiza. Arbuscular mycorrhiza btw. I was testing the benefits on inoculating plant growth promoting bacteria and mycorrhiza on a pot experiment of phytorremediation with Populus nigra. The fact is that those pots with myco actually yielded worse than no-myco (p < 0,05). While bacteria worked very well. The question is: what the heck?

Do you know if there were any periods of temperature fluctuation after the myco was established? I’m just wondering if it’s possible you had a mass die off part way through the experiment that may have harmed the roots.

My understanding is that mycorrhizal fungi is only effective if the fungi comes into contact with the plant roots hence watering mycorrhiza into a garden bed is fruitless. Having said that, there are companies that sell a more varied cocktail of fungi strains focusing less on mycorrhiza. This was the first year of my application to several ornamental landscape beds and a vegetable garden. I will gauge the success by how well a specimen tree in decline reacts to the combination of fungal drenches and humic acid applications Like everything in life it’s easy to get sucked in by the charlatans pushing product. I must say that since soil science is such an enigma that it’s easy to spend $ thinking you are doing the right thing. When I grew up I was taught that plants really only need NPK. Years later I was at a seminar and learned there may be 16 elements a plant needs. A friend of mine told me that it may be up to 42 necessary elements now. What we all need is reproducible tests and peer reviewed research on all facets of plant production but I fear that will happen the same time as I get my bullet train between Boston and DC

Would it be plasible to buy the smallest amount possible and culture it first to find out if it's alive and then transplant innoculated soils into other pots/locations if it was discovered to still be viable? This is understandably a much longer-term solution but might keep risk and expenses down but it might be helpful in a place where fungal biomass is low. Then again, if you're only getting one strain, it feels like it'd be a lot of work for not much benefit.

Fungal spores are meant to be the mechanism to withstand unfavorable conditions such as heat, lack of humidity or other conditions. I don’t have any of the specific strains that they are using, mostly because it’s patented so there won’t be independent studies. But I do know at a lot of agricultural supply (for producers) keep all their mycorrhiza in freezers or cold storage. The research & development I was apart of have a PHD soil microbiologist that demanded everything be carried to the field in coolers with ice. So either the people who develop the products are overkill or they know enough to determine solarization and heat will harm the spores. For example my father in law if he is working with inoculants on the farm it’s all mixed and prepped during the night. and they will stop part way through an application if it gets to warm inside the holding barrel.

We don't have winter we have summer and not summer 😜. Over 100f/38c are common. I think it’d be worth it long term if you’re setting up a garden. I got some ibc totes made into a worm bin and going to start a compost pile. You can buy like Dr earth compost starter with fungi and bacteria or microbes. I’ve seen a few other types I might get. But I think starting a compost pile with it would be good. Then I’m going to add charcoal to hopefully capture nutrients from chicken manure that’d escape otherwise. I guess you lose a lot of nitrogen as you compost. I do think more expensive fungi like thirty or sixty bucks for a pound bag probably is better to use when you’re planting plants and just add it to the hole or root zone. I’m not so sure if like fungi that live on roots can grow without plants? Can they grow in a compost pile or worm bin? I have no idea, but heard some fungi need roots to grow.

If fungal populations decline or die due to heat, what happens when I spray Holganix Bio 800+ on my veggies and it is left to live outdoors in the southern USA where it's hot and humid?

I’ve succumbed to great marketing several times. I’ve bought, and ultimately thrown out fungi spores, microbes, azomite, and rock dust. Without using those products I have tons of fungi and microbes in my soil mix. I’ve heard that if you want extra fungi and microbes just grab a cup of topsoil from a forest. I’m sure that you would get a ton that way, but I’m not educated enough about it to know whether or not those are the strains you’re looking for so I haven’t done it myself.

The only way this organism works well is it needs live roots to stay active, here in Arizona I keep a heat tolerant summer cover crop, cow peas, mung beans, flax, and in cooler months Diakon, peas, beans, flax, Buckwheat, marigolds, vetch, cilantro, dill, fennel, and I find even with the heat is stays around, in Sask. I'm not sure how it would survive in the frozen soils. Here we have live plants year round, in our summer home in the Okanagon of BC I till and plant rye, oats, vetch for winter cover, as we don't get much ground killing frosts, and most springs we have green cover The vineyards keep cover crops between rows, as it is mostly sandy soils, it helps with production, they reintroduce it every year thru irrigation, as their cover crops die out, as the irrigation is shut off for Brix to increase.
