It really shouldn't be a surprise. Everyone last year was complaining about how passing is dead, everyone is running a 2 high safeties. Anyone with even a passing understanding of football strategy knows, if they start playing deep, you run the ball. Of course RBs are gonna make a come back after everyone starts dropping their safeties. And passing will make a come back when Safeties start being used in the run game. That's the game. That's the Xs and Os
@JoshuaRadford-w7d6 сағат бұрын
I think something else that is actually novel but still somewhat of a throwback is the success of splitting up the running game. Jahmyr Gibbs & David Montgomery, Saquon Barkley & Jalen Hurts, Derrick Henry & Lamar Jackson. They all have discovered that you can combat the short shelf-life of your runners and create a more dynamic offense by splitting the reps. This used to sort of exist with fullbacks and halfbacks, but the same principle has re-evolved.

I'd like to see a team draft, sign, or otherwise acquire two shutdown corners and see if they can bring back the Grits Blitz. The '77 Falcons could've outfoxed Don Coryell if they'd been able to cover those two wide receivers in Coryell's anti-blitzing scheme man-to-man.

A big factor is the change in the nature of defensive backs and defensive preparations in practice. The heavy passing game caused a switch to lighter, speedier backs. Tackling became a secondary consideration. Add to this the increased length of the season, and teams do not conduct live tackling drills nearly as much as the once did, in order to minimize chances for injuries in practice. DBs and defenders in general are worse at tackling now, and talented RBs are taking advantage.

If nothing else, the running back rookie contract should have some exceptions so a talented player can get paid before getting worn out. ie: hit 1500 yards in your first two years and you automatically can renegotiate for a new contract. The top RBs absolutely should be getting paid more than backup TEs or 3rd string WRs.
