The truth is to ask those that migrated what happened. Some Nigerians may be regretting but they haven’t told you what happened or what they did. For example, some borrowed money and struggling to pay. Also, some lied to the school about money. I came to the UK few years back and have 2 Masters without any support from anyone and doing well. Don’t have time for social media or pictures. When you move to a new place, it will be hard but then you will balance. Also, some are lazy and want to live like a queen. Here is to work, safe, help people and then enjoy. I have stayed focused to the end for the reason I came here. A friend once said “I’m not feeling the UK” within 3 weeks in UK and I laughed. Here is not a bed of roses, you wake up to work even during the snow and rain. I’m happy I can help people back at home. Anyone that want to travel for a better life, go ahead but have a solid reason and stay clean. May God help us all.

Let me help you with the downsides Loneliness Depression Racism Filtering system (they will filter you out with any opportunity they get, they take care of their pple first so before you get a good job you have to be solid or very good at what you do) Bad weather (cold is not romantic, leave movies out of this) Menial jobs (most pple who come here to study are not used to menial jobs like warehouse and cleaning but the system is structured to set you up to do it ) Bills Culture shock (no social life, bad food, stringent regulations. Nothing too bad but if you re not used to it that's a problem) Benefits Basic amenities Money( it's hard to save money here but if you do manage it well, you will be comfortable especially if the money is used back home) Experience ( coming abroad makes you more open minded, you get to understand what pple go through) If you re a middle class or upper middle class earner in Nigeria and you want to give up everything to travel, make sure you do YOUR OWN research because once you are in the system there is no going back.

Diasporans like self are very happy to call where they live home, home where you are protected, respected and rewarded! Where life has value and your children have the promise of a future! i worked 4 years in nigeria, i was able to save about 1m, drove a 2003 corolla,, went to canada, first year i saved 20k dols, drive a 2020 model car, have peace of mind. i was robbed once in traffic, once at home where i was stabbed in the hand. I have no regrets. Japa if you can

This is a well rounded perspective. The Moderator had to balance the Japa spectrum because both Jake Okechukwu and Igho Ekakitie were not against it. Intially there was the Japa wave in the 60s (indepence) , then the Andrew checking out Japa of the 80s. Then things stabilised through the 90s and early 2000s. In the last 5 years, the world population has noticed the shrinkage in the working population hence these new programmes of lowering the bar on immigration. Every country has citizens that migrate. Plan your migration if you are itching to travel. It is definitely not all gloomy like some Nigerian platforms/organisations/influencers are trying to portray it. It may not be paved with gold, but you know that the chances of being kidnapped, rare electricity supply, bad infrastructure experiences is low. If you don't like it go back to the motherland. One advise though. If you are getting on in age, think it through very carefully. If you have nothing to loose like you don't have a good business/job in Nigeria and can legally travel, then Japa. Enough ranting, live your life, this is it.

What do we call the migration that took place in the 60s , 70s, 80s and 90s. Are those Japa too? 🤔 From time immemorial, Nigerians have always been traveling out of the country at any opportunity. The question to ask is, why is the British and Canadian embassies issuing visa to the immigrants? America started issuing visa based on lottery, starting from early 90s and nobody call it Japa then. Now, Britain open their boarder to international students and seeking for health workers. Nigerians suddenly woke up from having brain drain. It is political session and things like these are always the topics during election.

Japa literally means escape! Nigerians are escaping to other countries not because there are guarantees that life will automatically transform into a paradise. Relocating to a new environment means you're starting from scratch. Even if you're Dangote's kid, you will still experience challenges but with patience and the ability to adapt. The conversation should be beyond euphoria of JAPA as a negative connotation but creating an economic model for growth and sustainability. Apparently, the presenter has a myopic view of migration, its dynamics and terminologies. Legal labour migration shouldn't be confused with illegal migration (ocean crossing). There's nothing new about emigration from Nigeria. In fact, the numbers are lower compared to the 60s, 70s and 80s when it was easier to relocate/travel as a Nigerian. The number of Nigerians legally relocating is a minute proportion of the country. In the UK, Nigerians don't even make the list of the top 10 countries of immigrants. There's an overbearing fixation on legal labour migration in modern Nigeria. We must realise that most of the Nigerians migrating are not average Nigerians and they know what they doing and leaving behind to go to those countries. The media should be more focused on illegal migration and campaigning against it, and working to upturn the drivers. To restate the obvious truth, Nigeria is a lost cause. A holistic personal and social renovation is needed. Blind patriotism isn't what will fix Nigeria. We need to be frank, factual and faithful. The presenter was trying to guilt-trip migrants as being unpatriotic. Make e no worry, many of us were there (even more successful than him) before we saw the light and took flight. Even though he is a TV personality, he's just one police or hoodlum incident away from regretting being in Nigeria. I'm not even sure the presenter knows Jake is a former BBC presenter and producer. He could have simply taken a cue from Jake's wisdom and not go contradicting his guests. Gross unprofessionalism. If you know any Nigerian who migrated abroad legally that is regretting their relocation, just advise them to return home and see their reaction. . You can preempt their reactions, right? Another point is that some Nigerians have unrealistic expectations about migration and they soon get disappointed by the staggering realities of their new country of stay. Some are also not patient to build in a system that allows growth. How do you get into a country and start regretting within a week or two? Migration must be done with a long term goal. Wish everyone the best in their decisions.

As a Ghanaians.i would say, the problem with Nigeria,it's overpopulated,The Gov't doesn't have the financial sustainability to provide essential like electricity for all. Pay retired pensions on time, provide proper security for citizens. These makes it unattractive for any reasonable person to stay there. Maybe adopt Chinese one child system, to limit the population.
