Great video Pastor Steve. Actually, I'm a classical, Trinitarian, Pentecostal but I so admire the worship, passion, and lifestyle of most UPCI folks. I've read David Bernard's 2 books on practical holiness and basically agreed with them and recommend them. I admit some people and churches do come off as "legalistic " I hate that for a lot of reasons. Not the least of which is it turns people off (or gives them an excuse) from real holiness. When people really love Jesus they don't want to look or be like the world. Yes we need to be balanced, kind, and wise, but NOT compromise.

I believe women should wear women's clothes and men wear men's clothes and I think people should cover up their nakedness, but I think modesty in the NT is referring to costly clothes and jewelry. I rarely hear preachers talking about people wearing fancy clothes that bring attention to themselves, in fact, some encourage it.

openscholar you’re absolutely right. Briefly- I was financially poor and the woman pastor told me that - men of God dress with class. Never did she ever - do more than offend or suggest. I guess Jesus- who did not have a place to lay his head to rest- wasn’t a men of God- as the prosperity preachers say “Jesus wasn’t poor”. We Americans see the scriptures through our modern cosmic view, based on our material prosperity- yet we easily forget that some of our ancestors stories of living without things which we call today necessities. Ex. Things that are convenient and luxuries- which with minimum effort we can do without. To simplify the subject I’ll stick to decency & modesty. Meaning it must be judge on the premise of truth. What is decent & modest. Obviously the interpretation rest with the cloud of witnesses. If the godless world see a Christian and say by a majority “that cloth is sexually provocative & vain”. It’s not complicated. Aren’t we the salt & light of the world? Aren’t we here to be witnesses of the gospel of Jesus Christ? Oh- how I miss those Cross sermons of dying to self. The only fruit of the Spirit is that of total surrender, real repentance, and obedience.

The reason Jesus took issue with the Pharisees is because they taught tradition as law. They basically used their own standard as a measure of obedience to God, so when they purposed in their hearts and minds to decide if someone claiming to be of God truly was from God they would use a standard of rules and regulations that weren't of God in the first place. So they unintentionally dismissed people that God sent to them because they didn't check all the boxes that they believed where marks of holiness. We are to obey the ways of God, walking away from sin is not legalism, thinking someone is disrespecting God because they don't wear a necktie is legalism. There are liberties in Christianity that you are not allowed to judge people on like food and drink, days they celebrate and even clothes they wear within the realm of modesty. Is it immodest to wear a brand new t shirt and nice jeans to Church? I don't think so, nor do I believe it to be disrespectful. You may believe it to be disrespectful but you don't get to manipulate me into that same belief, I have liberty in that area because I may see it as beneficial to reach out to the less unfortunate or to just be "approachable". Less flashy and concerned about types of clothing is more modest and content in my opinion. I think legalism manifests more in creating a standard more strict than God's. And I do have scripture to back this opinion up.

I think if wearing something make you judge people then becomes from men not from God. We can wear modesty but the most important is the modesty of our hearts, if someone wants to use dresses all the time and cover all the body let them do it, if someone wears jeans let them wear at the end "But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander." so do not create division for this

I think the question of what it means to be, "In the World and not of the world", has been the source of a lot of legalism over the centuries. It's the same reason why the Amish do what they do, abstaining from man's progress helps them to be justified before God. Pentecostals are absolutely legalistic. A lot of Pentecostals that I know, have absolutely zero assurance of salvation. Their assurance is based upon how often they speak in tongues, have they repented of every single sin they committed that day etc. A person who has trusted in Christ is positionally holy, regardless of bad behavior. A lot of the ritualistic things that you find in the Old Testament, have been fulfilled in Christ. Are we to keep God's moral law as best as we can? sure, but no one does. As James says, whoever keeps the law and fails in one part, has become guilty of breaking all. Some of the passages Pentecostals try to use to scare the congregation are passages like Hebrews 10:26, which is talking about rejecting the gospel and going back to a life of animal sacrifice as a means of Justification. When passages are studied in context, the bible become a lot easier to understand.

The thing is, the definition of holiness standards seems to vary from church to church. The holiness standards of one church may actually be biblically sound while the so-called holiness standards of another church may be utterly absurd, stemming from misinterpretation of scripture and church tradition. I've come across all kinds of doctrines in the pentecostal holiness churches, such as tongues are essential for salvation, it's a sin to eat ice cream on a stick, you must believe in snake handling practices, it's a sin for women to wear white pantyhose, it's a sin for a man to part his hair in the middle, and on and on. So holiness standards are right... according to who's biblical interpretation?

Certainly we as Christians should be striving to be more holy. There is no question about this (1 Peter 1:15-16). I think the issue is how we get there. The answer is simple: grace. No amount of works on our part will ever make us more saved than we already are. When God chose to adopt us, He did so with the foreknowledge that we would stumble and fall even after turning to Him. But the Bible says He chose us just the same--in ADVANCE--to be adopted into his family (see Ephesians 1:4-5). I think the mistake so many in Spirit-filled churches (and I belong to one) make is to think that they are loved more if they do right and loved less if they mess up; that their acceptance is based upon their personal holiness. This is a DANGEROUS trap that the enemy uses to keep people in bondage. TRUE holiness comes from knowing that in my darkest sin Jesus chose to die for me (Romans 5:8). It is knowing that you are loved BEFORE you get your act together that brings about the fruits of repentance. As Jesus said to the woman caught in adultery, "Neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more." The "holy" people wanted to stone her. Jesus loved her despite her sin, but He called her out of it. This is what the church should do. Love people as they are, but show them the same grace we ourselves have received.

It's the Holy Spirit who dwells in the believer that makes him holy. The only thing that we have to do is to surrender to Him and to walk in the Spirit and if we walk in the Spirit we will not gratify the desires of the flesh . It's not like: 1.do this and 2.don't do that, but: If you do this ( walk in the Spirit) THEN you will not do that ( give in to the desires of the flesh). These are the same ones that will try and get the skirts and modest apparel off of holiness people that do adhere to deep biblical convictions on holiness and get them in shorts /makeup /and cut off hair ! etc.. I have been thru it over and over again ! They preach freedom and choice of your own convictions , however they are not satisfied with the Pentecostals having their own biblical convictions, most want that off of us , which is trying to take our freedom of choice away as well as what they claim ! I say all of this from experience of not only myself but my brothers and sisters have been battled in this same way ! I've seen it for YEARS !
