My sister had lifesaving heart surgery 54 years ago. It was a miracle as she was the youngest patient to get a pig’s artery and survived 40 years before it had to be replaced.

@@BobRooney290 No, the first replacement happened at 15, it lasted until she was about 45. Now sadly, at 63 she is in heart failure with limited time left. As I reflect back to the original replacement, I don’t remember her taking any medication, rejection or otherwise.

They did it again just last month with a living breathing walking human. . Hopefully this is common soon. Also, it would be trivially easy to make all pig donations, live donations, further increasing viability. Knowing I have a transplant in my hopefully distant future from PKD there is certainly an appeal knowing I will get a healthy, young organ. I’ll probably live longer.

Another interesting video. People have animal heart valves. It all depends on how desperate you are. If you have been on dialysis a long time or are unwell on HD then some people would risk a pig kidney as they risk having organs from people who had cancer or AiDS. Thank you for the informative video.

My dad is a double kidney transplant patient. After a novel virus attacked his kidneys in the 80s (he was born in 1962) he was given 6 months until his kidneys failed. He made the UK news for being one of the first people to get a kidney transplant in a hospital in Liverpool. He got this donation from his mum and he kept it going until 2007 when it failed and he was donated a second transplant from a man who died in a motorcycle crash. In 2021 he had 3 strokes in the space of a week and survived but lost kidney function again. He’s been on dialysis ever since and I know he’d absolutely prefer a pig kidney over having to dialyse even only twice per week which is much less than some people need to. My parents both live in Australia now and are in their early 60s like the gentleman from the story. I wonder if you know of any clinical studies going on in Australia relating to this? I think my dad would be a keen candidate for research in this field. Thanks for the video and all the best!

It's the very best hope we have aside from increasing the donor pool, somehow. Artificial kidneys are another viable solution, but the filtering mechanism is not an easy system to reproduce artifically unless you simply miniaturise dialysis.

Were any postmortem analyses done on the patient who had a heart transplant from a genetically modified pig? He only lived for six weeks, though. Didn't see a whole lot of info coming out after his demise.
