True, Rich, in 1932 Washington wasn't known as the Commanders. But then they weren't in Washington in 1932 either. Boston Braves in 1932 then Boston Redskins until they moved to Washington in 1937.

@@tankeater Well actually the league gives a city a franchise. So when George Preston Marshal moved his team from Boston to Washington for the 1937 season, he abandoned the Boston franchise for a new one that the league gave Washington D.C., which previously had no NFL franchise. So technically the "Commanders" only date back to 1937 NOT 1932. Just like the Detroit Lions only date their franchise founding to 1934, when the team was moved to Detroit. It had previously been located in Portsmouth Ohio as the Spartans. When a new owner took the team from Portsmouth, the Lions occupied the then vacant NFL franchise in Detroit. It's a minor point I guess but that is how it is. Indeed any team that relocates cannot really claim to be the same franchise, that is why the league did what it did when Art Model moved the original Browns. What you are really referring to is what the Pittsburgh Steelers did in 1940 when they changed their name from Pirates to Steelers. They are same franchise because they stayed in Pittsburgh and did not relocate.

Washington Commanders are far from the gold standard in any sense of the word. That said, Dan probably saw how much the Broncos sold for and figured screw it

People who say that forget what this franchise used to be before Dan bought the team. They still have three super bowl trophies, they have a rich history of great players, they have a vast and loyal fan base that has been sick of how their team has been dragged through the mud the past thirty years. They aren’t a Texans, Panthers, Jaguars new age team they are the Washington whatever the hell you want to call them, and they will go for a lot more than the Broncos. If they can get an owner who knows what they’re doing, build a state of the art venue, can get a quarterback, coach, and secondary, this team has a lot of great pieces to work with. And by getting rid of Dan and building a venue that looks like it belongs in the third world, fans will come back.

That or just accepted reality. What people need to consider is that Snyder has paid for his ownership of the team almost entirely via debt since the beginning. Not long after he acquired the team he sold 35% of it because he needed to pay down the debt he owed. When the minority owners tried to sell their shares he blocked the sale and eventually had to be given a debt waiver of $400M to acquire the remaining shares. So in all likelihood he eventually needed to sell part of the team to be able to pay down debt again anyways. This time around though he would probably have a tough time being able to do that without selling the whole thing. It would be surprising if someone came in now and bought a minority stake in the team after all the controversy surrounding him and the way he handled the prior minority owners. He blocked their sale in 2020 that was going to be big profits for all of them. And then drug them through litigation and who knows how they got paid for their shares once the owners voted to approve him getting them back. If you’re rich enough to buy a minority stake for the hundreds of millions it would cost you’d think you’d be rich enough to just buy the whole thing. And why would you want to deal with the constant headache that would come from him being involved. I think he probably said he’d never sell it to try and save face but has accepted that he has to sell it because he can’t afford to keep it and/or was going to be forced to do it anyways by the other owners. May as well just do it now and try and save face by claiming it was your choice over being forced to do it eventuallt anyways. Lucky for him the team values will end up netting him a big profit over the $800M or so he paid for the team.

If you aren’t a Washington fan, the equivalent is like Christmas, your birthday, winning the lottery and marrying your high school sweetheart all rolled into one. It’s easy for fans to hate their owners, but we HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE this man with a passion. RG3 and Out was understating what would happen if he sells. We will throw a parade, we will erect statues, we will start singing our former fight song so loud they’ll hear it all the way up in Baltimore. Washington is a cornerstone NFL franchise. Say what you want about the last 25-30 years, but the Washington Whatevers aren’t the Texans, Jaguars, Chargers, whatever. They changed their name, but they are still Washington, and have one of the biggest and most frustrated fan bases in the NFL. If we get a new owner, uniforms that don’t suck, a new stadium, a decent coach and quarterback and can return this franchise to its glory, things will be right.
