If someone wanted to compete with the other graders they'd make dirt cheap graded toploaders or something that exist purely as a verifiable condition for online sales. I'm not a huge fan of buying Timmy's "near mint" collection, but it's also not my favorite thing paying x3 raw for a PSA 9.
@xcyphs

Slabs are overpriced and overrated. I do send in some cards to get graded, but I wont ever pay the premium for slabs on the secondary market. I like my binder collection. People buying modern cards in black labels for thousands of dollars blows my mind

Here’s my thing I see your point but at any point PSA could go out of business. They have a lot of lower end competitors who do it cheaper. The way I see it there is a finite amount of vintage (1996-2010) left in existence and only a handful of them come back 10-8. My point is there is value in a PSA slab much higher than a booster box considering pull rates ,price , conditions. There’s no guarantee that they were stored properly or conditions on cards could be damaged.

I don't think that many people actually buy older boosters to open them. It doesn't make financial sense to open the newest box, much less an older one, unless you're making money by streaming it or some other means. Just because it's *possible* to pull the top chase card, and then get a 10 on it, doesn't mean that it's statistically possible to make money in aggregate. There's no guarantee that any given slab is even in good shape. Cards are still susceptible to damage from humidity inside slabs, and I don't know what the previous owner did with the slab. Maybe they stored it on a shelf in their living room for five years and it's visibly bleached compared to when it was first slabbed. There's never a time where I buy an older cert when a new cert is available. Considering there are millions and millions of every single card printed, I don't expect any shortage of the newest cert numbers available forever into the future, it's not like a 1st Edition Zard that you have to take what cert is available. People like to have a giant shelf full of Pokemon stuff, and sealed product fits the bill well. You can even see it with Reddit investors filling their living room with giant promo boxes and cases of blisters. Sealed product is not just an investment to be opened one day. Sealed product is the collectible in itself. I would only ever buy slabs for cards I especially like for my personal collection, and anymore I've come around to binder collecting those. Actually, the best use of slabs is a verifiable condition for online purchasing before cutting them out and sticking them in a binder. If someone wanted to compete with PSA they should make graded toploaders or easy to open slabs. 😂

When Pokemon cards started being referred to as "investments," I bowed out. Can people try to learn actual skills and work on themselves, before deciding just to sell Pokemon cards for a living? Not being rude, but I see too many people hustling overpriced Pokemon cards these days, and I wonder if they are just selling extra cards, or abandoned actual careers to be "resellers."

I really enjoyed Jake's live stream and was happy to see you on Alex. I almost stopped watching though when Jake's irritation levels went through the roof. Fortunately, you kept your cool and so did Ray and Retro. The only disagreement I have with you Alex is that slabs are guaranteed to go up in the population. There's a very real possibility certain cards with less than 100 pops will disappear over the decades. My dad had a $200k vintage Hot Wheels collection foolishly stored in his garage. Five years ago his garage started on fire after a chemical explosion, destroying 1/3 of his house and his entire garage as well as his entire Hot Wheels collection. Some slabs will disappear. Other than that keep up the videos and major props for keeping your cool during the middle portion of Jake's stream. You seem like a super awesome guy and I'm proud to subscribe to your channel.

What causes these sealed products to hold value is the various chase cards they could contain that could possibly grade a 10 but why chase those boxes when you can just invest in the chase cards themselves….find them ungraded in mint condition and chance grading a 10 then hold.

30th Anniversary is only around the corner, I think if your not an investor then collect what you like. I personally don't see the point of spending hundreds or thousands on something that wont give you your best return down the track if it's a long hold. I agree everything eventually appreciates and I to collect modern sealed boxes , though where they used to appreciate nicely in value within a year now we are seeing 2-3 years for decent return excluding some outliers like Evolving Skies. I understand your argument better now, new "investors" should take the safe path in modern sealed until they learn what's what and that does take time. I compare this to what happened during the Pandemic when new collectors doubled in numbers and all went straight for Base Set not understanding that though it was the OG, it was also the most heavily printed set to date, so prices went up and straight back down as those new collectors realized this truth. I Subbed you mate!

Perfectly explained. I think the biggest reason which you pointed out is, slabs are ALWAYS increasing in population where as sealed is ALWAYS decreasing. Slab population will only slow down when a product becomes scarce at which point sealed product is king anyways. You can get lucky as you said with slabs, I bought burning shadows rainbow zard psa10 for $500 AUD on release it's now $4k 6 years later because no one predicted the bad quality control from that set to produce such small amounts of gem mints. I believe that's a very rare situation though. You should collect what you like if you don't care about returns on slabs. Sealed modern is definitely king atm in terms of almost guaranteed percentage growth vs any other investment. Great information brother keep telling it how it is! 👍👍

Jake has this weird blindness that nostalgia for cards are formed on the first card sets opened. That is swsh and sm and all the people who entered the market during those two eras will always love buying sealed boxes (if not singles) His nostalgia is for wotc. Many people will long for swsh and sm. I think singles and slabs are more for collectors. My opinion. Sealed product can go up over time, whereas singles and slabs are assets that likely will not rise much. I agree with jake in that they are very very speculative.

If people are throwing around the term "investment", their needs to be some talk about exit strategies of each booster box/slab. I would not hold Battle Styles and Evolving Skies for the same duration. Example: if I got into each booster box at $90, i'd be selling Battle Styles after a 2-3x because the fundamentals of the set aren't as strong as evolving skies which could keep going because of demand. Battle Styles will plateau before evolving skies does and I'd want to exit that position when it happens rather then just hold each box for 20 years. Same reason why hedge funds sell over valued positions and put that capital into under valued assets. They have exit strategies. Good video, we can all have different opinions and still enjoy the hobby.

I think i mostly agree with everything you said but here are a few of my takes. I do completely agree that unopened are the least risky vs largest reward (it's because if you have 5 unopened boxes of a set you know not all boxes will have the best cards in it BUT you can sell them like they DO/MIGHT have the best cards in them) (the gambler's premium). The downside to unopen boxes is you never know how many are out there (there could be warehouses stored of a set for all you know) with slabs you know how many exist. I also think the barrier for entry for unopened boxes is pretty low (anyone can buy boxes) so it's a double edged sword. I don't invest in modern psa (i think owning them for investment is crazy, own them if you love the card). I personally own either unopened boxes or black label modern cards (usually black labels have a less then 3% chance of being produced and ultimately (like you said) the people with money want's the premium best of the best. Black labels currently are down (not rising like unopened boxes) but I still believe they are good investment and you can get them for much cheaper now (dollar cost averaging) and when (in 5 or 10 years) theres a surge, black labels will skyrocket.
@NostalgiaNomics
@NostalgiaNomics Жыл бұрын
Only time will tell how all this plays out. I have no idea where the black labels will end up when its all said and done. If you pulled them yourself and sent them in to get a 10, then yeah. Singles and slabs are inconsistent with what can happen. Did you pull vintage holos from a $3.99 pack and sent them in to get 9s or 10s? Were they gold stars or cards that are rare in high grades? Most modern cards are a risk. Sealed modern is where it's at for investing with the most potential for growth in the future because of increased eventual scarcity of supply. The sealed depends on how supply and demand is over the next 5, 10,20 years and the type of investor you are. Some people buy at low prices now and flip in 3 years. Some hold for 10-15 years and embrace the long term hold. Let them know Alex!
@NostalgiaNomics

Yes, i agree with you. I am a mixture of both. I usually try to sell the majority of my positions, depending on the set, when they reach that $300 to $600 range and roll the profits back into new product to consistently realize the gains and also because the growth from $100 to $300/$600 in a lot quicker than the growth from $300/$600 to double from there. I always keep 1 Case of BBs long term and sometimes more if its ETBs of a special set like celebrations because you never know when the next Evolving Skies or Team up will emerge and go on a run.

@@NostalgiaNomics Clearly sets are going up in value over time like with Chilling Reign and even up to Lost Origin now. Those that say modern doesn't appreciate because it's over printed are missing out on the fact that it's being consumed just as fast and available market supply is decreasing faster than it's being replenished. Very solid strategy! If it works, why change it? Special sets make a lot of sense since there aren't any booster boxes and a set like Celebrations also came with packs of other sets so you can watch those ones too.Even though I'm not sealed collecting, it'd be modern all the way. Lowest floor highest potential ceiling. Vintage just doesn't have that anymore. Buy a pack of fossil an wait for $1,000 or buy a case of Lost Origin and wait 5-10 years?

He can’t grasp that people like modern at all. He is incredibly delusional. It’s a beautiful card! He was trying to say that myself (who doesn’t own it btw) and others who actually bought it don’t like that card? It’s not just an investment to some people it’s a card people like. The cards are way way cooler than the older stuff. The guy is in his own wee world and I would not take advice from him, I’d rather ask my two cats. Unreal. I’m off to watch the rest of it and I’m looking forward to your appearance.

Ohh god it got worse and worse. That guy is so immature and really doesn’t listen does he? I lost count of the amount of times his reply was “whatever” like a teenage girl. Not gonna lie, that was a really hard watch. Keep doing you man. I wouldn’t even engage with that level of ignorance or delusion. 👍

I’m buying PSA/BGS slabs in the USA and flipping them here in Europe, the profits are well worth it, but no way I’d hold them long term. Loved your stance on Jake’s live, I don’t think he considers the average investor when discussing which dilutes the discussion..

Slabs are like individual stocks. Higher risk higher reward. Sealed is like index funds. They will have ups and downs but overall longterm growth is for the most part safe and will happen with time. Solid video like always.

Definitely agree with what you have to say. I've only been in the hobby a year and have reached the same conclusion as you. IMO slabs are a risk because of the number of them out there. Sure, there's a lot of sealed out there, but with the nostalgia and fun w/ opening they aren't as volatile.

"Modern sealed" isn't inherently good though without context. Price certainly always matters. This is said by someone who transacts very heavily in all these markets and is buying (and currently owns) more wholesale modern sealed than I ever have at any point since I got back into this on the side in 2014 and am now doing this full time.

@@PokeMartin So you're telling me that buying a PSA 10 vintage slabs at $400 in this current market is smarter than buying a sealed booster box that in 2 years went up from $100 to $400? You're telling me that a PSA 10 vintage slabs valued at $400 today has more potential than a sealed booster box of ES?? Is that the logic?

Hello, I got back into the hobby with Crown Zenith. Between me and my buddy we have all of the top Crown Zenith hits in PSA 10, we are on the fence about holding or selling them all. This is the first time I have graded anything. Perhaps selling now and buying back later is the play.
@NostalgiaNomics
@NostalgiaNomics Жыл бұрын
I dont want to give any opinion on that. I wouldn't want to be wrong and have you make the wrong decision. New sets with new hits are always a gamble on how they will play out. Some fall in price and some are like moonbreon lol GOODLUCK!

One of the best videos I’ve seen breaking down the investment game. I play PoGo pretty heavily, so that crossover set caught my attention. Wasn’t long until I was buying BBs of the better sets like LO and ST, which have already gone up. BB should stand for Bread and Butter because that’s what they are for the TCG realm.

What do you think about the moonbreon CGC 9? I'm into it for $500. Hold or sell? I feel in that grade (speculation) the card in 3-5 years will go to $1,700- $2,500. Within 10 years, all things constant (meaning demand for alt arts, the hobby continues to grow, Pokemon doesn't over print etc.) I feel the card will be $5,000-$10,000. I get market cap, but believe there will be enough demand as collectors mature and want that more expensive card from their childhood.

I think if Evolving Skies does not get a reprint it will continue its upward trajectory because less and less will get opened at $400+ a box so the supply of graded cards will likely not see a huge increase from where its at. I think that card will always hold a special place in everyone's heart to remember this era. If it does get reprinted, depending on the size, it could come down and be down for some time. Its a gamble either way. GOODLUCK with whatever you choose!

The cards that hold value are the ICONIC cards. That Moonbreon is iconic and will be remembered by everyone in the future. I got a PSA 10 for my daughter and every trade night she goes to every kid goes nuts over that card. When those kids grow up they will get one. Long term hold, but it will be big. Especially if they do not print Evolving Skies again.
