I do love that 245 Jon. It’s my favourite of the 3 for looks and sounds. You mentioned Harley Benton and I am waiting since November on an SC550 EMG. The one that was made in the Cort factory so I hope it sounds good with those EMG’s. They are in big demand with a long waiting list but hopefully I’ll get mine in mid February. 🤞🤞🤞😄 That intro was mega 👍😄❤️

Aside from the weight, access to the upper frets is important to me, so long ago I chose my '71 SG over a Les Paul because the neck was better for me. Eastman's SB59 is a fantastic guitar. I have Eastman's 335-style guitar and it is amazing - better than any of the half dozen Gibson 335s that I tried at my local Guitar Center - and half the price.

I’m “that guy” who prefers the looks of the LP, but loves the sound and comfort of the PRS SC more. I did play a new 50’s Standard back in November that felt great and sounded so warm and sweet. However, I was trying it out for an out -of -town friend and my personal budget wasn’t going to let a purchase happen for me. This was a great idea for a video.

Great job, Jon. I love PRS, but If I got one the 245 would be on the short list because of the scale, radius aside. I can't say about the sound, but I'm very much in love with the 24 3/4" scale and 12" radius so I'm quite partial to Gibsons. My '71 Les Paul is VERY heavy but I've played many that are not. Chambers are fine; the solid ones all sound different anyway. And my guitars prove a heavier Les Paul isn't automatically a better sounding guitar. Also, I think humbuckers have a lovely clean sound as any pickup. Keep up the great work.

Tokai. Now that's a nice guitar. I had a real nice Tokai 62 Telecaster Custom that got stolen in St. Louis. I loved that thing and getting a double bound Tele is a tough find for left handed guitar players. I've owned a McCarty too. $2,200 back in 2000 and the top wasn't even bookmatched. I had to sell it. That drove me nuts. I even called PRS because I thought it was a second. They tell me no and that's how they come and you don't get bookmatched until you pony up the additional cash for the 10 top and bird inlays. They also have crappy left handed support. The guitar was built pretty nice though, but I wouldn't pay their money ever again. I have a Les Paul Special right now, and after all the guitars I've had in 40 yrs of playing I have to say it is a pretty awesome guitar. I've also had a 1960 reissue Les Paul (the one's with those pee-pee colored inlays from late 90's early 2ks) that was OK, and an actual left handed 1976 Les Paul Deluxe. It was nothing to write home about.

To each their own, but I still prefer Gibsons. Maybe its like PRS is a trip to a fancy restaurant, but I still prefer moms home cooking. I like the meat and potatoes goodness of a Les Paul. Its familiar. I think it becomes imprinted on a persons mind. All those years as a young guy, going to music stores in the days when owning a LP was a dream. I marveled at them. Later I could afford a couple used ones, but FINALLY in 2019 I bought a brand new LP Standard, and its the pinnacle of guitar ownership for me. But...to each their own. PS: I also own a beautiful Harley Davidson for the same reason. Are there better handling, and faster bikes? YUP, but they arent a Harley.

I’ve been looking for a single cut guitar for a while, I’ve always played strats and super strats. I want the classic single cut sound. Having spent a LOT of time playing guitars at the stores, I’ve realized a few things. 1) the only thing giving me the sound in my head, are the very (too) expensive, non weight relieved Gibson Les Pauls. 2) Prs makes a much better overall guitar than Gibson, no question. Every single one I picked up was flawless. The Gibby’s were definitely hit and miss, even at the higher price points. Prs’ are more comfortable too. 3) I like the aesthetics and classic sounds of the Gibsons, there’s just something extra there. Can’t explain it. But the PRS is just an absolute dream to play, it’s like butter. 4) I have no idea what to buy…

Late to the party, but I get what you mean. I've owned two PRS and two Gibson, including a very heavy 1975 LP Custom, (and three Fenders). While searching for that single cut tone the Gibson fills the tone in my head, while the PRS always sounds brighter and thinner in comparison (like in this demo) to the point of swapping pickups chasing the right tone. For sure PRS are a dream to play and awesome quality and I really want to like them. But for now I'm back on a Gibson (and a Fender) and happy the tone in my head and hands match.

Fantastic playing as always. I was not paying attention to the video whilst listening to your playing. I was on another browser tab reading and so, my ears did the listening and not my eyes!!! They all sounded GREAT! There are pros and cons to each. And regarding the weight/tone debate - that has not been proven scientifically. Malcolm Young sounded killer with a semi hollow Gretsch for heavens sake. It's all an individual journey. Play the guitar that you like the feel and sound of... everyone has a different opinion. And so much of the tone is in the hands anyway.

I think the pickups, stings, nut, bridge, frets and fret board account for over 99% of the tone. I think wood and weight probably account for the last 1% and this may be generous. I also think a lot of guys just have a mystical image of the LP, Strat or Tele from their childhood because their heroes played these instruments. Nothing wrong with that. I bought a Heritage H535 because I loved Ten Years After and Alvin Lee and I couldn't afford a Gibson. Gibson's were also getting bad reviews back in 1997 when I bought the Heritage. I am a bit of a contrarian and just a guitar hobbyist but I think there's very little difference in the tone of the 3 guitars as they all sounded great and the subtle differences are more likely due to pickups, strings, bridge, nut or fret material. Personally, I like PRS. I have a PRS S2 Satin Singlecut which set me back just over $1,000 brand new a few years ago and it is my favorite guitar. I would like to demo the PRS S2 McCarty models, SE Zach Myers, and SC 245 and am thinking of selling the Heritage to fund the purchase of the PRS and maybe a new amp. I think any quality singlecut guitar with decent humbucker pickups can get the classic LP rock, southern rock and blues sounds of the LP of our youth or at least so close that the rest is up to your ability and not the instrument. I find it very interesting that the SC 245 is competing with a guitar that cost 3 to 4 times as much. It really says a lot about how much manufacturing has improved that you can get a damned good guitar for under $1,000. We live in good times when you can get that much quality for under $1K.

Those three sound very similar at this end, probably the Les Paul has a bit deeper sound that the PRS' but I can't agree more that when we are not that young, weight is very important to consider. I love playing my Telecaster Offset but at 3.8 kg, it feels so heavy. I tried a PRS Mira that was very light, probably in the range of the SE 245, however at the end I got a nice Telecaster FMT HH that weights 3.3 kg and sounds amazing, as you said, that weight reduction is a big pro and happy shoulders and happy back means happy playing! By the way, the transitions between guitars were vey smooth, almost like magic and funny to see how the guitar in the background kept changing as well 😆

Nice video. I have owned several of both. I currently still own a Gibson Les Paul classic and a PRS Chris Robertson single cut. Both are amazing guitars. They do sound a bit different... not sure one sounds better than the other... again both great. The coil tapping on the PRS is 1000 times better though. The Gibson classic costs $2,500 and the PRS about $1k. The Gibson had nitro finish and even though the top is plain looks nicer IMO... but in terms of tone and feel both are epic it's just personal preference. I've thought about selling my Gibson because the cheap PRS is that good... but I collect guitars so like to have it in the collection...

Great video! They all sound really close, with the Gibson having slightly more low end, which with the slightest bit of EQ bump in that range would make the PRS sound just like the LP. Overall, they sound so close to my ears that I'd be happy playing any of the three. What makes one "better" than the other would be the weight & feel; to me, the fatter neck of the PRS is the clincher, while the lighter weight is a welcome bonus. Guitars originating from the Cort factory have been extremely well made over the last few years, and honestly Gibson's quality has fallen behind in almost every category. Love Gibson guitars, but when it comes down to separating with my hard-earned money... I'm looking elsewhere~

In my experience the Gibson is more vintage sounding than the PRS. But they're both sounding huge ! It's just a matter of taste, not quality. Then, there's feeling. For example I don't like the SE neck, can't explain why as I really enjoy 50's Gibson neck... A matter of taste, again. But I second you, there are tons of great LesPaul like out there.

I have found that a really wide leather strap makes a massive difference to being able to support the weight of the Les Paul when standing, I like yourself am an older player, when I was a young man I could not afford to buy a Les Paul but my copy was even heavier but I had no problem playing a 2.5 hour gig, now though without the wide strap I would not be able to use my Les Paul. Playing a slow tempo song in the middle of a set and sitting on a guitar stool can also give some respite from the heavy LP!

From all the review, experience, and comments from other guitar players Gibson Les Paul are great on the high end. So many manufacturers like PRS, ESP, Schecter, and few other make Les Paul style guitars at 800-1300 USD and sound/play better than any Gibson LP around $2K. There’s that Gibson added tax cause of the name. I love Gibson les Paul but it hard to pay way more just to have the Gibson name when all these other brands make it semi affordable

Personally, I find that the PRS 594 has a bit more articulation and clarity but that comes at the expense of that raw, more muddy tone of a Gibson Les Paul. Not a 'great' deal of difference really and the Double Cut PRS is lighter, has easier upper fret access and straight string pull through the nut so not likely to get tuning stability issues either.

The ESP E-II Eclipse models are absolutely fantastic and hold their own and often beat out more expensive Gibson Les Paul's. I didn't really like the neck shape, but it's no worse than the slim taper neck for me. In terms of sound, the Les Paul was a more vintage and smoother sound where each PRS was fuller which is pretty typical. The red PRS was slightly muddy on the neck on lower notes but not too bad. I think I prefer the Les Paul but they all sound real good.

I have both PRS core and Gibson. I love them both, but only a Les Paul sounds like a Les Paul when sent direct to an amp. With today’s digital manipulation, almost any guitar can imitate another make/model. Play what you like.

I love both Gibson and PRS. As for Les Paul shape guitar, I want conservative tone. I don't need the newest Classic, coil tap and phase switch. 4,2~4, 3kg is my sweet spot. Recently, there are few good condition 2000´spec Classic. Heavy a little bit is good tone. If I want double cutaway guitar, I choose PRS Custom. Not double cutaway Les Paul.

PRS guitars, are PRS. They are not copies of Gibson or Fender. They are their own thing. They can be bought sight unseen normally due to their exceptional consistent quality unlike Gibson and Fender. Both of those manufactures make some real diamonds, but you have to find them by playing them in person because their quality as a whole is not as good as PRS. But when you find one of their diamonds, buy it!

I tried to buy a les paul 3 times at once. I say that because the flaws were unacceotable for the price, so I returned it. Did this two more times for the total of 3. All within 48 hours of each other. I got all of my money back and bought a esp ec1000 for about a third of the price. Gibson makes junk.

A PRS SE is definitely a CHEAPER 'Les Paul' and arguably better built? I prefer my PRS to the Gibson Les Paul Studio that I used to own, it's a much better instrument and cost less than half the price.
