In this video, I will answer a very frequently asked question. Are quails loud or messy pets? I love quails but, just like any other pet, they need time and commitment. And some have features not everybody will enjoy.

I raised a coturnix quail from an egg once. It grew up to be a female and so was nearly silent. A beak far less dangerous than a parakeet. She would come when I called. I let her have time out of her cage every day, to roam around the kitchen and eat bugs if she could find them. She laid an egg per day! She once sought out where I was sitting just to lay an egg next to me. I miss her.

My quails have a Gardenhouse with freerun. - Very much space to enjoy their lives. Quails needs a lot of space. The often get hurt by discovering things. They need really good care and it is alsways good to have a bird knowing VET next to your home. You have a lot to learn about chickens and their behavior. Quails are very headsrtong do not force them to whatever! Like chicken quails learning things from each other. You can learn them thing they should know. If you are very nice and lovly to them and share your life and time with them you can became a part of the group. Do not stress this birds like all other bird they can colapse and get a heart attack instantly. - Be always quite and friendly. A health check very day helps to fix little problems before they become big. Do not keep them inside if you love it to her loud music at home or watching horror movies (anxiety frequencies that trigger fear). You need species-appropriate and varied feed. Onions are a very good natural antibiotic. Clover helps against iron deficiency with too much green feed intake. Not every vegetable is suitable for quail. Eggplant is absolutely unsuitable. Grains, seeds, flowers like dandelion daisies, chamomile are fodder plants. Live food from the pet shop should only be fed as a snack, as much as you love it. Too much can lead to laying disorders. Special quail food can be found on the Internet and offers a good all-round supply with all nutrients, vitamins and minerals and is matched to the protein content. Never change the quail diet by leaps and bounds, because it can mean death. Always separate sick or injured animals. Always keep the barn clean otherwise you get a problem with mites and worms, which can be fatal. Naturopathy for quail can be found on the Internet. Change water at least 1 daily. Bring different types of litter into the barn (hay, straw, sawdust, earth, sand) You don't need free bird sand for swimming. Laying nests, hiding places. The barn should be redecorated every now and then. - The facility is to be changed (except for water and feeding points), so the animals stay alert, can follow their spirit of discovery and are well maintained. And this was only stuff that is need to know for keeping. No drastic temperature changes, temperature shock can lead to death. They control their body temperature in winter when it is cold via the feed intake and drink less if they are not kept in the apartment. Quail are extremely sensitive. Your primary needs must always be right: Protection from moisture, heat, protection from predators, they must feel safe. Good nutrition, cleanliness. All of this is absolutely necessary. Quails are very smart. Quail is very social. Quails communicate with up to 200 different sounds. Wachterkn can identify up to 7 different people (appearance, smell, voice, movement pattern). You can teach quails to listen to or respond to things by repeating them in their presence. My quail knows what good morning, good night, breakfast, worms, yes, no, come here. Her sister Rambo was the smartest. She listened to commands like flight or eat spider. When I said to her: Rambo, run home Rambo. Called her back to the garden house, wherever she was in the garden. I conveyed to her that danger was imminent and that it was safe at home. You can teach them a lot or explain them by showing them. Never force them to do anything, convince them that you are only acting in their interest and for their well-being. Time and love is all it takes. They may be little suicides, but they're not stupid, just clumsy in their nature. Please don't keep quails in a small cage. They are escape animals. Quail need space to escape and hide. Panicked, nervous or restless quail must be kept separate and darkened. Their hormone levels regulate themselves in the dark and they calm down (approx. 5-10 days). Darker not to much dark !! Quails are refugees, not domestic animals, they are wild animals and are actually unsuitable as pets. Keep that in mind! Some can fly very well. That's why you should have the space to fly. When setting up you should note that they climb and jump a lot. There is always a risk of injury and must be avoided as much as possible by carefully setting up the barn. If you want to catch a quail do it in fully darkness. When it is night or dark quails do not move! Do not run after quail unless it is absolutely necessary. Otherwise her instinct to escape is activated and she thinks that you want to catch and eat her!! When I'm at work or somewhere else Havoci sits in front of the window. There she has her special place. A big boy with all she needs. Outside I built a food house for wild birds so she can watch "TV" when I'm not at her side. Keeping a quail alone is normaly a torture and the quail will become insane. But if you are a really good keeper and you treat it with respect and love and share your lifetime than it is okay because you are her quail group than. - This is very important. Havoci was a fully paniced quail when she arrived ar home. She was not able to live with the other because everything was to loud and to stressful for her. Normaly this kind of quails get killed in a arct of "mercy" but I would nerver kill a animal how is in good health olny when there is no chance to rescue it. Havoci was only in fear so I had to show her that there was nothing to fear. Her stress was only a resoult of bad experience. So I show her the sunny funny side of life with love and time. 3/4 year later she starts to trust me. - I know this was a lot of time but I don't want to kill or give her away. Now she look at me as her mother or protector. Health check: Check nostrils, beak, eyes, anus for dirt and constipation. Check the bottom of the feet for injuries. I hope that this will help.

I imagine if you got a metal tray that fits nicely at the bottom of your cage, your could clean much more easily, you could pull out the tray and tip everything in the bin, then sweep up whatever is left. Also, with a metal tray you can arranged everything on it before you put it back so it should be easier.
@MrAviary

Partly true because the quails will also jump and get stressed if you pull something from underneath them/ push it back towards them. However if you use 2 and make sure the quails are in the other part this can definitely be an option.

I have tip for you bro. Use coconut fibre as bedding. Make is very slightly damp (not wet). It does not fly out the cage like woodchips, also it absorbs the poops and stops any smell. You rarely have to clean it out... Like a deep litter method. It also does not stick to the birds toes and is easy for them to walk on.

I have a range birds. All parrots. I am in love with all of them especially my budgies. Button quail are not silent but not nearly as noisy as budgies. Button quail can make a mess but it is literally nothing compared to my budgies. My conure, tiel, parrotlets, and bourke make next to no or little mess. I'd say my button quails are the same. Depending the enclosure you put them in you may not have to deal with dirtyness at all. Should you get a quail? Yes and immediately. This isn't to say budgies or other birds are bad and not amazing animals. My budgies are still my favorite. (don't tell anyone else) But button quails make a great beginner bird or apartment pet.

I've never tried this but I'm sure it's like any other animal. Every time it's going to use the restroom put it in the place you would like it to do it in, if you keep on doing this then it would probably remember where it should use the bathroom. Hope it works for you!
