What is appealing to Sinn fans is that the brand represents the no-nonsense, utilitarian, tool-watch segment that has been lost with most if not all of the major watch makers. Luxury watches gravitate towards becoming valuable jewelry. Sinn gravitates in the opposite direction.

great description I am saving for a sinn to be my "everyday" watch because it seems so durable holds decent value and it doesn't cost a huge amount of money. You can wear it in public places without the brand being super recognizable or a target of theft which is actually a worry with a rolex in many areas. Also I personally like the design colors/choices and the blocky square hands that line up nice with the dial hour markers. I like that it's a German watch and it looks like it with that type of design.

For 25 years, I’ve had a Sinn in my collection, right alongside my Rolexes, Pateks, JLC, AP, Journe and a host of others. My first was the sapphire crystal 103 chronograph, I now have a 356 Flieger sapphire on strap. I gave one on a bracelet as the first watch for my son when he graduated high school, and I missed it so much, I bought another for me. I love the classic instrument look to these watches. And they are very robust.

John, first of all I'm a long time watch enthusiast (50+) years and a professional pilot, so I gravitate towards aviation watches. I do own a Sinn watch (104 A St Sa) and love it and the brand as a whole. One important fact that you failed to mention is that Sinn no longer has a brick and mortar AD network and instead has an online watch dealership , specifically "Watchbuys" who deals not only in Sinn but other German watch brands. I feel that because of this, their prices are much lower and highly competitive for the quality they provide. Having dealt with Watchbuys several times, I can state that their customer service is nothing short of outstanding,

I would slot Sinn between Oris and Tudor, or even at the Tudor level. The 104 is better finished than an Oris Aquis, and at least for the Aquis with the Sellita movements, Sinn uses a higher grade than Oris

@@indianapwn3s I own an Oris Aquis 41.5mm (Sellita) and a Tudor BB58 and in my personal opinion, Sinn has the higher grade movement but the Aquis has the better case and bracelet in my opinio. I would agree with you, if you would compare the 104 with the Diver 65 models. For me, the BB58 is also clearly above the 104, but I never had any experience with the diver models from Sinn.

Asking "are Sinn watches any good?" is like asking "can I take my Seiko Marine Master 300 into a pool?" If you know ... you know. Well made video John. I think it's important to bear in mind, why Helmut Sinn started to make watches: because there were no affordable pilot watches available to him. And Sinn still produces tool watches IMHO. Some went to space, some were issued to special forces. They made tool watches specific for firefighters and first responders. If your Sinn Chronograph felt too big on the wrist I would recommend trying out the Sinn 103 with Plexiglass and closed case back, so the very classic version. Recently picked up a 103 Matte and it feels great on my 6-inch wrist. It feels kind of like a vintage chronograph but with modern components in it.

Sinn 104 is a classic model probably the best well made one watch collection model. 104 has a great bezel movement, uses the top grade Sellita movements (Oris use basic models in most models). You can always read the display quickly . It’s only 11.5mm thick and lug to lugs 47mm. Most people over 6 inch wrist can wear it easily. Letdown by poor clasp on h link bracelet.

I enjoy my 556i on the H-bracelet. A great, rugged everyday watch with clean, utilitatarian looks, high legibility and the clearest anti-reflective sapphire crystal I've ever seen. Double side coating makes the crystal disappear. Love that. NOT a big watch ( 39mm). Helmut Sinn was a pilot and many of his original designs look like aircraft instrument dials.

I don't need a stopwatch, I haven't needed a diving ring since the 70s. I just need a high quality watch that shows me the time and date even with my poor eyesight. Yeah I love my sinn 105. I got this thing because of the tegmented case and of course the UTC (gmt) movement. I am a programmer so for me, my watches need to be able to deal with magnetism. I also do bouldering and I need something that can take a beating. This watch doesn't have a scratch on it, and it's my beater. I also have an overseas and a Tudor ceramic black bay and my sinn is the watch that is most often on my wrist.

I wanted a seriously rugged watch & I'm a watch nerd so I wanted something legit. A friend suggested I look at Sinn. I ended up buying a used U1 tegimented & black. 2 years old, $1,900.00. A lot of watch for the money (literally, in the case of the U1) I felt fine buying used because as you mentioned the movements are workhorses AND it scratched my watch nerd itch. Other watch enthusiasts recognize it. It is BIG. The U50 was available too but, the U1.... something about it :)

All good points, John. It felt a bit like you were searching for negatives because they don’t really bother me. I’ve had two 104s - a regular black dial Sellita and then a limited edition with an ETA movement. People often look down on the Sellita but for me it kept equally good time and was a bit less fussy with regard to crown positions to set. However, the day-date font is easier to read on the ETA. The only downside I can think of regarding the 104 itself is the limited power reserve - but perhaps that only means I need to be more active :) Also the limited dealer network is a minus but the customer service is very good. Bottom line: I wear it most weekdays and totally agree with you that it is great value for the money. Definitely a Sinn fan!

Many F1 cars, at the pinnacle of automotive engineering, use engines of other manufacturers. Why shouldn't watches be allowed to do the same with using tried-and-tested movements made by companies that dedicate themselves to doing just one thing? So you make a good point. A lot as to do with just marketing. A reliable watch should also be easily serviceable, and it is much easier to service Sellita and ETA movements than an in-house Rolex movement. Either you want to brag or live in a higher echelon of life where "in-house" is equated with better quality , of you want to live a practical one.

In 2001 I bought a 157 in steel from a work colleague. 2010 a U1. And just now, on February 1, 2024, a 103 St Sa with an argon drying system. It's a well-dosed addiction ...

Almost everything is going well with Sinn. I don't care if they use Eta or Sellita movements, actually my concern on this is: pieces with Sellita movements at a retail starting price over $1500? Come on guys, there are many micro brands that offer this caliber for 15 hundred dollars, with great cases and bracelets, very good specifications and really delicate finishes. Don't get me wrong, the pieces are great, both in design and quality, but it's a bit difficult to justify the those prices with little more than steel quality and specs.

I’m with you. While I love what Sinn is doing - the prices just don’t quite seemed justified. Other comments touting the ruggedness. That’s impressive from an engineering perspective - but I’m not going to be ramming it into anything so of limited value. May pull the trigger - someday.

I like wearing "spotable" watches, not for luxury but for other enthusiasts. If you want someone off the street to notice your watch as a sign of status, that person is probably going to be a thief or call girl.

The interesting thing is, that they try to bring watches technically to a new level. Sinn design is quite good, if you like flight instruments and tool watches. Elegant watches for business are not their preferred style in my eyes. Like the classic EZM 1, 3, 13.1 and the 104 black I on a leather strap. The business Finanzplatz watch is technical interesting but more a model for guys from Frankfurt/ Germany to have a local decent show off. Which that they would get more into design styles as Bauhaus to build more elegant watches e.g. for business and family events ❤

Haha that’s awesome you’re wearing a seiko . I bought my rolex sub stainless steel black face maybe 14 yrs ago . I was a hater for seiko , I’d give my uncle shit about wearing one etc . I was ignorant . About five years ago I was in a watch store in Miami and the seiko turtle caught my eye . And I bought it . Since then its my main watch . It’s so great . I paid 400 for it which isn’t much for the quality of the watch . I have changed the bracelet to a ssteel jubilee that’s worked out incredibly. I still wear my sub . But not as much as my turtle . Seiko makes good stuff . I’m going to buy a samurai eventually because it looks so sharp .

100% quality tool watches. One thing I did notice was the comment about how thick Sinn watches are. As I heard that I looked down at my Tudor BB 41, then at the Sinn 104 and 556 in the winder. Compared to the Tudor BB 41, the Sinns are svelte.

I’m really just learning about Sinn though I’ve been at least aware of their existence for a while. I’ve heard different people talk about how great they are but I never hear anyone talk about what they’re like to live with long term. How easy/expensive is it to get them serviced in the US?

Really well designed watches; very German, and mostly no-nonsense, straightforward looking. I do not own a straight-up Sinn, but I do own a really nice Bell & Ross Space chronometer (circa 1999), which was actually made by Sinn, as most other B&R watches until the 2010’s. You can see the same design ethos of other great German products like Leica cameras, and air-cooled Porsches, etc.

I have the lesser loved 956. I already had a tag and didn’t want a Rolex or omega because I could throw one into a crowd and hit someone wearing one. I don’t like how people in JPN just buy the popular brand without understanding what makes it a good watch. I just liked the story behind sinn, the easily readable dial even with all the other stuff going on in the face.

I have two Sinns as part of a large collection. The U1 is iconic and will survive nuclear war (something that may be needed in the very near future). It is large but they now make a smaller version. You did not mention that they produce the "Navitimer". They bought the rights and equipment to make the Tag Heuer Navitimer in 1979 (during Tag's last bankruptcy). They still make it today. I have both the Tag Heuer and Sinn Navitimers in my collection. The Sinn version is arguably as good or better at a much lower price. Yes, it is not an inhouse movement, but the Tag was not either until just a few years ago.

Hey mate - I'm really taken by the Sinn 3006 that you show briefly in the video (wife says I have to wait a year before I buy it). Do you have a review of this watch? Worried my wrist size might not work with the watch size...

I have a 857 UTC and it has replaced my Submariner as my every day watch. I love how tough and legible it is and it is just a hair less accurate than the Rolex. With the current insanity going on with Rolex, it spends most of its time in my Wolf Winder. So, the Sinn simply delivers an honest tool watch!

Sinn's movement is not really a debate. Yes Eta/Sellita based, but then again check the cost. What other brand do you find at 2k with that kind of technology Sinn use? Their Ezm 3/3f and 856 models is the best value on the market. They are fair to their customers in terms of pricing.

Having owned a Sinn I was slightly underwhelmed but this was due to selling a Christopher Ward Dartmouth to “upgrade” to a Sinn. I didn’t see any upgrade other than price. That being said one area where Sinn is fantastic for me is branding, a bit like Seiko where there is just something cool about the brand that helps me overlook their shortcomings. Sinn and Halios have a great cool brand image that CW just doesn’t have (I often think single word names work better for sports/tool watches and 2-3 word names maybe better for higher end or dressier pieces)

Hi John, I understand why Sinn choose to use eta's, but with Germany's history in watch making where is there version of eta movements, it seems strange they have all the know how in making the rest of the watch but not the movement, any thoughts anyone.??

Thanks John P. I have admired Sinn from afar, but I am wondering if I missed the boat. I remember when Sinn watches could be had for under $1,000 for their entry level models, and now that is simply not possible. The question is, can you have a luxury tool watch? Because if all you want is a no nonsense watch that can tell the time and be rugged, and still look reasonably presentable, you can find all that for under $500. But it won't be German, or mechanical, and will likely be something like a Citizen.
