Of course stay away from new watches, buy known brands or at least with known movements, and the rule “the more you know the better” is always an important one. As I type this, I am wearing a Seiko 5 from from 1967 that I bought from a thrift store for $20. My watch repair man says that it has never been cracked open and is all original. I also have a Seiko Turtle, also all original, but I don't wear it as much because of the weight, but it looks great when I wear it. I've see Seiko Frankenwatches, but we don't have much of a problem with them here in the U.S. because, up until recently, they were considered by watch collectors to be worthless. When they broke, people would toss them or put them in a drawer and forget about them. I have found quartz and automatic Seikos to be extremely reliable. All the quartz ones usually need is a battery, even when they are more 40 years old. The older Seiko quartz watches can have serious movements. I have a Seiko chronograph with a 5 jewel movement. It is a very impressive watch (to me at least!). I also have a fake Hong Kong Seiko that I bought for laughs, but it had a nice vintage Speidel band that alone was worth what I paid for it.

Also like to add watches in the 2-3k range that uses the usual Eta 2824 and Sellita 200. Some brands take pride in their product for 2k, but then there's some you need to be aware of that just doesn't care and are heavily overpriced. You just buy the brand name and heritage. You see some of them just having the basic specs and no effort in the case finish whatsoever. Nothing wrong with basic, but it's not worth the cost. In this price range, my favourite brands in terms of best bang for your buck are Sinn, Damasko and Ball. Look past the design alone and read up on what happens inside their watches. Some brands can charge 500 to 1k more just to have some magnetic resistance or COSC certification. Those are the ones you need to be aware of.

Great video, my man. Spot on. The one proviso I would add is that vintage collecting is very doable… by those who know what they are looking for. I love “transitional” pieces and have a few in my collection… but I have had occasion to school dealers on them. The way to buy them is always as you did - with an in-person visit and cracking the back. The follow up to that is that one of my other favorite pieces is a $20 Chinese Sub homage by Tevise. Fun beater watch that sparks as many conversations as my actual Sub. Keep up the good work and keep spitting facts. I like it.

Please stay away from hype from many reviewers who benefit from telling you that the Vacheron222 is worth three times above retail that's bullshit cause I know it's not so turning mine down in March 2023. No watch is worth double retail many are not even worth retail, think about it omega has already two price increases this year alone and Christian from Theo and Harris says that's about right cause T&H sell used watches!. I share your experience and thoughts on watches; however, I place the Seiko Grand Seiko on par with many Rolex models. I think the Grand Seiko is the best all-round watch on the market at present. The new models retail at around £6000; with movements as good as those used by Rolex and Omega. I think Japanese watches have caught up with Swiss watches, even surpassing many Swiss brands. On the other hand, I also think one should wear a watch that makes one smile every time one wears it. I never heard of a Frankenwatch until I came here. Thanks for the advice. I had a knock-off Patek that worked for a month. It was a beautiful watch. I can now afford the original but I would have to do a lot of soul searching in my heart and mind to justify forking over that amount of cash. To be honest, I love all watches from the ones you get out of a vending machine, to the ones that are as much as a house. If it gives you accurate time and has all the bells and whistles you love, than I am probably happy for you wearing it.

In some way all swiss watches are franken-watches. They are made from parts made all over the world. If you think a bit about it: you have to buy chineese watch brands to really avoid that. But even then the cases may have been done in some different country.

I believe that at least some of the Calvin Klein watches have Swiss movements and are high quality - their watches were part of the Swatch Group for 22 years and are now produced by the Movado Group. Maybe the quality slipped at that point - I don't really know. My only point is that this brand seems better than most of the 'fashion watches'. (I bought a new one some time back on the grey market for around $40 and I have to say it seems like high quality.) Update - my CK watch quit working after about 2 years, so maybe not a high quality movement after all!

My first watch bought by my parents was a timex. It looked good and I felt good wearing it at school (not too many other kids had a watch then). After that, I stuck with variations on the Casio watches, even including the one with the calculator built in. Then I moved to the Casio ProTrek's and had 2 of those - they lasted well and I didn't wear them out so much as getting bored with them (The ABC measurments weren't very accurate as well). Then I got a Garmin Instinct 2X Solar and later traded up to the Fenix 8 Amoled. I can't see myself getting bored with that for a while (customisable watch faces). It also seems to compensate for barometric pressure against changes in altitude - I don't think the Casio's did that. Anyway, it seems much more accurate to me. Do I need all of that functionality? No, of course not! It's very much about what makes me happy, knowing that the functionality is there. It's the same reason I carry a swiss army knife - I never know when I'll need it. I make the most use (apart from "what time is it?) of the weather, step counter, distance and number of flights of steps. (Trying to get fitter). I'm not surprised I didn't see much in this video about digital watches, but that's ok - it wasn't the theme this time.

Yea, that Speedmaster thing was an auction at Phillips in Geneve. Bud to be fair, the auction house was fooled by Omega itself. The director of Omega museum "proofed" it as a unpayable treasure which they can't ignore. Also some other employees of the management level were involved in this scam. Even it's a Frankenwatch, but the parts were investigated to be from Omega HQ itself. So tzey let it look like a unique timepiece and brought the price with fake bids up to 3 Milion. Usually never more than 500K for real unique pieces. But this was worthless. So at the end of the auction Omega itself bought it. Now Omega fired all these employees who were involved in this scam and investigations are ongoing. But anyway....I never trust auction houses. I visit them often for arts and historical pieces. They have often no idea whst hhey offer. There are just too many different kind of arts and historical things. It's impossible to know everything. Even if they know they don't care. And their fees are incredible. Usually they ask for a fee of 20% from the buyer and some even also from the seller. So I don't know the pricing of Phillips. But at least they do get a fee of 600,000 for the Omega. If they get from both, Seller and Buyer it could be even 1,2Mio.

I have a lot of watches and he’s absolutely correct about fakes and fashion watches. I haven’t encountered many Frankenwatches in person, but I have found and bought a lot of original vintage watches that have not been tampered with. Much of my amassed collection is made up of old or curious watches that were too cheap to pass up, like a Heuer 1000 in steel that needed a crown & hands, for $5. At $100 sorted out it has a ton of reverse snob appeal. I’m lucky I’ve got a fair number of high ticket watches, but I can just as easily enjoy a Casio one day and a Baume et Mercier the next. The fun is the hunt . . .
@madbutfunnybats Жыл бұрын
Regarding the vintage watch one, there are sites and forums which could help determine which parts go with which watch, especially omega, but i do agree with the frankenwatch fear. Personally for me, as long as the case model matches with the movement model and the dial, that should be okay since for me, those are what really give the watch its identity. And if you do end up with a frankenwatch, take the loss and if you try to sell it, just be honest about it and if no one buys it, keep it. It might not be a valuable watch but it would still be a nice watch

Avoid vintage like a plague. Those are mechanical devices and therefore they have a limited lifetime. There is not really any possibility to "service" a watch indefinitely. After 1-2 full services it is in reality just trash. It is far more sensible to buy something new made in the style you desire. My own SNKG is already on it's 3-rd werk. The original was tossed out for the hacking and winding. The replacements needed service after about 5 years and of course it was far more sensible to just put in a new werk.

@Horologique11 ай бұрын
Tag Heuer is a historic watch company which dates back to the 19th century. TAG bought the very beloved Heuer back in the 70s and ever since the brand has gotten a lot of heat for "degrading" their offerings at first (cheaply made quartz watches in the 80s and 90s) and for doing some very brash advertising with Hollywood stars in the 2000s and 2010. There was even an episode where they bought the rights from a Seiko chronograph, Caliber 5, and claimed it as their own in-house caliber. But things seem to be starting to turn around and quality seems to be back at the company's core, and the reputation is climbing back

It looked too good to be true, and it was.. Luckily I got to see it personally having done my research and make some check points. I quickly discovered that the dial was a reproduction, not the original, the hands too were added later and slightly different in shape and length, the colours were off and in the movement I found some parts that were clearly not original. I said it to the seller as I think he genuinely thought it was original and he was quite upset when I pointed out the problems. But in the end he accepted that he had been fooled himself. I am still looking for a perfect Pogue. I have discovered during my search that unfortunately almost every Pogue you find online isn't original.
